Winter snowpack meltout for Fairbanks was April 22: this was the last day with an inch or more snow on the ground based on the NWS observations. Meltout was ten days earlier than last Spring and almost exactly the long term normal. There is no long term trend. @Climatologist49 @CarrieinFbx @leepetersen @anisian

Green-up in Fairbanks is approaching. Using observed temperatures since March 1st and the forecasts for the ten days, our little model now showing a 60 percent of green-up late next week. The long term average green-up is May 8 and this year is sure to be earlier than that. @CarrieinFbx @anisian @mivox @themattphelps @debmcqueen @leepetersen @dboo @Climatologist49

The Tanana River at Nenana is showing a lot of melt water on top of the ice Tuesday early afternoon. Continued mild weather this week ensures it will be an early break-up this year, but remember, the tripod has to move 100 feet to trip the clock. Image courtesy Nenana Ice Classic.

Tappers working with OneTree at UAF report birch tree sap was flowing Monday afternoon on favored hillsides in the Fairbanks area. This is slightly earlier than recent years average. The annual round of our climate and environment has turned to Spring.

Utqiaġvik, Alaska high temperature Tuesday of 36F (+2.2C) ties for the second highest temperature on record this early in the year. Only milder day was April 12, 1957, when the temperature reached 37F (+2.8C). @Climatologist49 @cinderbdt

Daily record high at Utqiaġvik Tuesday with the temperature up to freezing as of 1pm AKDT. The previous record 31F (-0.6C) was set in 1988, and April 16 had been the latest date in the Spring with a daily record high temperature below freezing. No more. Climate observation at Utqiaġvik since 1920.

yesterday the US & Europe contributed aircraft and firepower (Navy and Air Force) to “help” shoot down Iranian missiles and drones — you know in addition to the massive “iron dome” defense system that we pay for.

imagine if we cared for gazans or Ukrainians like we care about Israel! Imagine if we cared about poor Americans like we care about israel! I cannot with this country

US Drought Monitor analysis now showing "abnormal dryness" in Southeast Alaska south of Petersburg to Craig line. This is due to below normal precipitation since the start of 2024 and the lack of mountain snowpack.

@douglasvb @ai6yr Nome, Kotzebue and Utqiaġvik are the easiest to get to (non-stop jet service from Anchorage). All have about the same chance of clear skies at that time of year. Sun will be slightly higher above the horizon at Utqiaġvik at the time of totality (11º) compared. to Nome (8º) and Kotz (9º)

April 1 snowpack snow water equivalent as a percent of 1991-2020 median in/around Alaska from ERA5 Land courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. Most of Alaska snowpack is near to above normal with a small exception in the central Interior and a larger exception in central and southern Southeast. In Canada, much of northern BC, NW Alberta and western NWT snowpack is far below typical for this point in the season.

Anchorage Airport is at 123.6 inches of snow for the season. The record is 134.5 inches. Ten years since 1953 have had enough snow to set a new record. So knowing nothing else, it’s unlikely but by no means out of the question that this finishes as Anchorage’s snowiest winter of record. @Climatologist49 @EBecker @patrace @EyeOnAlaska @sbmorgan

Reza Aslan argues that historical Jesus is best understood as a poor, revolutionary Jew who really wanted brutal Roman occupiers (and their Jewish collaborators) the fuck out of Israel. Aslan says “Jesus was a Jew preaching Judaism to other Jews. His was a Jewish mission, one concerned exclusively with the fate of his fellow Jews.”

Aslan argues that when Jesus referred to the Kingdom of God he wanted to usher in, he was referring to a Jewish Israel free of Roman rule
