In case you were wondering, why yes, the global average daily temperature is still the highest on record, as it has been almost every day since early July 2023. Graphic courtesy U. Maine's Climate Reanalyzer using ERA5 reanalysis.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea has decreased a bit in the past week due to storminess and southeast winds. Current extent is about 17 percent below the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. There is still plenty of time for ice to expand: the maximum ice extent in the Bering Sea is typically reached between late Feburary and late March.

why should a single state decide who gets to be president of the United States, when it should definitely be 9 people in robes

@EBecker Even better, only 5 robed people.

Alaska’s Cold Snap 2024 is done. In some areas the past two weeks featured the coldest sustained weather in 15 years. At others, a day or two of intense cold was more prominent. While quite cold for the 21st century, this event doesn’t even rate an asterisk compared to 20th century cold snaps. Lowest community temperature was at perennially cold spot of Chicken at -62F (-52.2C).

@EBecker Glad you'll be there. Should be fun. Yeah, real conundrum on what to wear. Parka or lighter coat, mukluks or street shoes.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea is very close to the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. The ice pack remains to the north and east of the Pribilof Islands, with the closest ice about 125 miles (200 km) northeast of St. Paul.

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@ai6yr @BakerRL75 definitely not a classic atmospheric river (more short and stubby) but the atmosphere works on what’s there, and what’s there is a lot of water vapor.

Always amazing how precipitation (rain plus the water in melted snow) can vary in complex terrain, not just storm to storm but even across several months. November 2023 through January 2024
Anchorage Airport: 220 percent of normal precipitation and the highest NDJ total of record.
Meanwhile, 35 miles away at
Girdwood: precipitation was a little bit below normal (94%)
