Sea ice extent as of March 30 in the Bering Sea is almost exactly at the 1991-2020 median and 30 percent higher than the end of March last year in NSIDC data. Ice loss in Kuskokwim and Bristol Bays has been notable in the past week, while in the central Bering Sea, the ice edge has been pushed south a bit by moderate north winds.

Being Sea 2024 maximum sea ice extent has been reached in NSIDC data. The max extent almost exactly the same as last year but occurred a month later. The max extent was about 14 percent below the 1991-2020 average and was the latest since 2016.

Fairbanks Airport March 21-25 average high temperature was 48.0F(8.9C). That makes this the third warmest 5 days this early in the season in the past century. The only milder 5-days were in 2019 (49.4F, 9.7C March 21-25) and 1998 (49.0C, 9.4C March 20-24). The 1991-2010 normal high temperature for this time is 28.2F (-2.1C). @Climatologist49 @CarrieinFbx @leahwrenn @anisian @mivox

So @AlaskaWx are we just going to segue directly into breakup? It’s feeling like everything’s melting awfully fast…but it’s still really early!

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@leahwrenn The fear is we get partway through break-up and then next week it gets cold again, so lots of treacherous ice underfoot. There is significant model agreement on just that scenario for early next week. Currently in the models it's a short lived cold then moderates back toward normal, but…

@leahwrenn @CarrieinFbx @anisian @tania @mivox @debmcqueen @Climatologist49 I was behind a person at the PO in shorts and flip-flops. Given the state of most parking lots, flip-flops seemed like a singularly bad idea, but then what do I know.

Updated Winter (December through February) change of the average temperature over the past 50 years in and around the Arctic, data from ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. The huge increase in average temperature east & southeast of Svalbard is due to sea ice loss. The cooling over central and eastern Siberia isn't large but covers a significant area.

Bering Sea ice extent is now at or very close to the seasonal maximum in NSIDC data. The pack ice edge is not far northeast of St. Paul Island in Pribilof Islands. However, the cold north wind pattern is ending and sustained south to southeast winds and much milder temperatures will spread over the central Bering Sea early this week, pushing the ice edge back north.

Ketchikan and Petersburg Saturday both reported a high temperature 56F (13.3C) and both are new records for March 16. Previous Ketchikan record of 55F (12.8C) set in 1966, previous Petersburg record 52F (11.1C) in 1988. Alaska high temp for Saturday will likely be 63F at Klawock.

Even if pi day is a fake holiday derived by mathematicians to sell more math, it's still a good day to promote the integration of the humble PA Dutch shoofly pie. But remember, if you don't favor wet bottom, we can't be friends.😉

Dallas Seavey is the first team out of White Mountain in Iditarod 52. It will be a cold run to the finish line on Front Street in Nome, with northeast winds and blowing snow across the Tokpok Hills to Safety. But, as the saying goes, it's been much worse. All but four teams are now to the coast.

6:00AM: 44F, cloudy.

We're bracing for that "plume of moisture" that's coming. Our special weather statement extends into NEXT Tuesday.

A week of rain, heavy at times.

Bring it!

@SilverSalmonAK back in the day, before the phrase “atmospheric rivers” was coined, the jargon term was “moisture plumes”.
