Lately I've been increasingly hearing anecdotes of AAA devs writing Dear ImGui tools inside Unreal for some reasons...

For a Discord alternative, Matrix, for this use, a forum, like the luxe engine one.

    I'm thinking about switching code editor. I wonder what's a good one?

    My singular reason is it's impossible to google for help related to Visual Studio, because all results are about Visual Studio Code.

    And well, adding a "-code" to the search doesn't exactly improve the search results.

    So yeah. I'm actually perfectly happy about Visual Studio except a few settings I can't for the life of me find, nor make a successful google search where to find.

    Helix it's a good option in case you want to use a modal editor.

    ⚠️ Account deletion is permanent

    We receive multiple requests every week to restore accounts accounts that were previously deleted.

    How can we improve this?

    Andre_LA,
    @Andre_LA@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @pixelfed

    (Note: I'm not familiar on how other social networks do that)

    My guess:

    • Disable for a short period of time (like 1 week) and then actually delete.

    • Warn about this behavior, and add an option to delete data immediately.

    • I suppose this is already being done, but make sure it's the actual owner of the account who is doing this

    These past days I've been lectured about all the horrible tales Unity developers have with the C# garbage collector and how they have to write their whole codebases obsessively to not trigger GC spikes.

    Is it really that bad folks? If C# GC is that bad, what impedes you from using C++, Rust or even Swift for Godot which don't have any of those issues?

    Andre_LA,
    @Andre_LA@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @reduz
    Maybe Beef could be a good alternative? It's pretty similar to C# but manually managed instead of GC.

    If you are developing a 2D or 2.5D game, especially for mobile or web, you absolutely must check out the Defold game engine.

    I refuse to buy into nitro because their moderation, removal, and report of servers built to specifically do terrible things to other people is grossly negligent and lacking... Why would I give them money when at the very least, their product cant even jump between servers without toppling over itself.

    @aeva Here (🇧🇷) I think most of courses will keep Unity classes because it's the major engine on job openings (most of 🇧🇷 studios makes mobile games), however:

    I've already heard that some studios are migrating to Unreal (especially the outsourcing and non-mobile focused ones), and I've seeing some Unreal openings too, this might make some courses to change to Unreal, the problem though it's the hardware requirements. 1/2

    I'd love to see a survey of non-gamedevs about the wider perception of ECS in the industry. The only AAA game I know of which is structured anything like the popular conception of ECS is Overwatch.

    Andre_LA,
    @Andre_LA@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @pervognsen
    I tried using ECS (using my own ecs lib) for my games and published on that it used it.

    Not for performance, but I thought it made more sense and was more organized.

    So, only indie stuff.

    My conclusion is that ECS might work nicely for engine systems, but for gameplay, it didn't really helped me, just using an "EC" approach (similar to Unuty) was much more easier and flexible.

    33% is quite a bump, I feel like in the long run this will only drive more players to PC only, probably on the next gen, especially considering there are things like Steam Deck now and multiplayer gameplay is free outside consoles.

    A bit sad that majority of people im following on birdsite are moving to bluesky instead of mastodon, a larger % in this last migration. I want to keep following them but I don’t see myself maintaining 2- accounts in the long run

    Andre_LA,
    @Andre_LA@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @djlink For me it's unfortunate although a bit funny since Bluesky it's really just like mastodon, but worse and with money (although the feeds thing it's a bit cool).

    I've been thinking about doing this:

    Any highlight post from here I'll share there, but only with a summary alongside with a link to the original post here hehe.

    Andre_LA,
    @Andre_LA@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @djlink I would say there is two main similarities:

    1: Multiple feeds are important:
    On mastodon we have "home", "local", and "federated", each one with some filter options (on website front-end), and each hashtag I would consider it's own feed too

    On blue hashtags aren't clickable, but there's "custom feeds", "home", "popular with friends" and IIRC "only posts" are the default ones, but there's user-made ones, like the "Game Dev" feed. I'm not sure how popular this is, but it's a main feature
