I appreciate all of the warm energy I get every year at @djangocon.

The ability to be on stage more than once is an honor I don't take lightly. I love that you all get to know the person that bounces around talking about community, but my favorite Djangonauts move mountains with their privilege in silence.

When they do "the work", they show up in spades to hold your hand, or cheer you on, give context, while remaining strategically and intentionally invisible.

Couldn't imagine a better way to have my first talk @djangocon than with @Rachell talking about @djangonaut!

Shout out to @sabderemane , @sarahboyce, @CodenameTim

There would be no program without them.

The only time I've ever been blackout was at Duke's homecoming in Durham 😅 now I'm back casually sipping wine and talking about jazz and art in off hours of (tech conference).

It's good be home... and in my thirties.

Programmers of Mastodon! I’m a beginner Python dev who is learning Django, I’m going through lots of different tutorials in finding online and learning bits from each.

My question is does anyone have any they specifically recommend? Even paid courses if you think they are worthwhile! (Bonus points if there’s video content, I learn quicker from content I can read and review side by side!

BajoranEngineer,
@BajoranEngineer@mastodon.online avatar

@DigiAshe @CodenameTim @wsvincent you're getting great resources in this thread!

If you need community to help you build your projects and answer questions, I recommend being noisy on this app with specifics -- people like to jump in -- and the Django Discord.

There are two I know of but I recommend the official Django Discord https://discord.com/invite/J9akT6hF

My post DjangoCon US homebrew has been decided.

A Banana Cream Pie Amber.

Details are still being worked out. It's likely going to be back-sweetened and only palatable in an 8oz portion.

@CodenameTim ooooo tis the season. I think I'm going to get deep into the cider and pumpkin this year.

Did you know that the first DjangoCons -- and versions by other names -- in every region struggled with funding their inaugural event behind the scenes?

This includes our fantastic @djangoconeurope and @djangocon events.

Help make the FIRST @djangoconafrica event a reality. Donations are picking up, but we are not there yet! Every dollar counts. https://2023.djangocon.africa/donate

Hermione is now at rest.

She was 17 and we got to love her for 13 of them. She was unfathomably patient and kind, even to the vet staff, who adored her. A terrible hunter, she preferred naps and Gilmore Girls to chasing strings, but would hunt for treats. She was the very best cat.

I hoped that we would know when it was time, and have the courage to do what she needed us to do. We did.

If we didn’t love her so much, it wouldn’t hurt this much. And of course, I’d never trade the love.

The PSF Board doesn't always make what I feel are the "right" decisions, but good people come together and hash out our differences. The PSF Board is full of good people.

Sometimes, it is one reason or another, and as I review, I think about how I can and should do more.

It's not too late for The PSF Board to make the "right" decisions -- every month -- I have hope! And it's not too late for you to make the right decision supporting @djangoconafrica with a donation

I've published https://vurt.eu/articles/on-safety/ - my perspective on safety for attendees at African Python community events.

I wrote it because I was troubled by some of the responses I have heard to the idea of a DjangoCon Africa -https://2023.djangocon.africa - in a country such as Tanzania.

It's right that questions about safety should be asked. But when they're asked, they must be answered consistently and fairly - and not used to damage or undermine African open-source software communities.

BajoranEngineer,
@BajoranEngineer@mastodon.online avatar

@EvilDMP I'm so appreciative to be in community with you! Your perspective and voice make space for others to feel safe.

How much does it bother you when people talk about "open source" language models (like Llama 2) which are released under licenses that don't meet the OSI definition for open source?

BajoranEngineer,
@BajoranEngineer@mastodon.online avatar

@simon missed the vote. Doesn't bother me at all.

BajoranEngineer,
@BajoranEngineer@mastodon.online avatar

@simon let me clarify -- I think conflating integrity and openness with OSI approved Open Source license is incorrect.

I'd rather debate the merits of the license than say that it needs to be OSI approved to be Open Source.
