Hail Freya!
This week's #FridayPaganPoll:

Do you do anything spiritual for home protection?

Spells, prayers, objects, superstitions, rituals… anything, I want to hear about it!

Hail Freya, it's Friday! Time for a #FridayPaganPoll

The Pagan path is winding, and it's actually encouraged to explore all different flavors and traditions until you find one that's right for you.

How many did you try out before the one you’re on right now?

Hail Freya, it's Friday!

Most pagans celebrate the cycle of the seasons. The thing about circles is that they don't really have an end/beginning, so everyone has their own idea on when a new cycle begins for them.

What day do you consider the seasonal ‘New Year’ in your practice?

Many US pagans want to visit Stonehenge or other international pagan monuments, but I'm willing to bet that each state has at least one sacred site that is equivalent- a place where people gather for spiritual experiences, then and now. Whether natural or man-made, they inspire awe, and have the feeling of a space out-of-time.

I want to hear about your local sacred site! No parameters, I just wanna hear about special places around the US. It would be cool to collect one from every state.

My daily morning tarot cards usually take on the lighter, more mundane meanings, so even when I get Death or The Tower, it's never that bad. The one I'm really afraid of in a daily pull is The Hanged Man, dude fucks with me every time. I wonder if this is the same for others?

Some of the best pagan/secular parenting advice I have received is “teach your kids about Jesus, or someone else gladly will.”

I taught my pagan children that Jesus is ‘the god of forgiveness and charity in the Christian pantheon.’ It's not perfectly accurate, but it framed it in a way that they understood.

It is literally impossible to be an expert in everything relating to and/or . The umbrella is too broad. So after the initiate stage, we tend to settle into a few niches.

I think this is a great humbling and equalizing factor within the community. We are all novices at something, and it's possible to find experts in all kinds of specific fields of study.

Here's my :

Expert- regional plant life, tarot
Intermediate- astrology
Novice- Greek pantheon and mythology

What are yours?

Hail Freya! Time for a #FridayPaganPoll

When I started learning witchcraft, the majority taught that a spell should not be performed on someone without their consent, even benefic ones like healing or protection. I'm wondering how much/if this opinion has changed.

Would you do a spell (or pray) on someone without their consent?

Hail Freya, it's Friday!
For this week’s #FridayPaganPoll I'm reviving an age-old pagan debate.
This is a two-part question:

Do you think cursing/hexing is an acceptable practice?

Have you done it?

I think it's important for newer Pagans to know that you are absolutely not supposed to feel guilty for not practicing your religion enough. This is a modern Christian and Capitalist concept; that you somehow have to earn the right to exist as you are.

I've been really busy the past two weeks with home construction, and I haven't done any devotions in like 10 days.

No big deal, my Gods are for always. In fact, time is probably a whole different concept to Them. My faith didn't diminish because I didn't light any candles. My love didn't fade just because I was busy. The entropy of life means that sometimes practices wax and wane, and you can either fight against it, or wait a few weeks and pick it up again when you're ready.

The terms "hard" and "soft" polytheism are relatively new in paganism. Scholars of ancient polytheism started using the terms in the early 2000s to differentiate these large disparities in ancient belief systems that before were lumped together. Naturally, pagans follow academics, and I believe it was Greer from ADF that first popularized the terms in modern paganism.
These words were meant to be a quick summation of how you see the gods, just a general idea. Instead of having to write out a whole essay on how you specifically think of the gods as beings, you could just slap this handy label on it.

They are not meant to be diametrically opposed, and therefore constantly debated.

They are not meant to be an entire identity.

You are not meant to choose either/or, it is a spectrum, and you might only lean one way.

Our labels are just simple, quick ways to connect with others. Because modern polytheists are so widely diverse, we have these little phrases we use to more easily talk to each other, no more than that.

I welcome all kinds of pagans to engage with me; I love having a feed of diverse thoughts and practices.

Are you a pagan who believes all gods are aspects of one? That's cool, we can talk about how ecosystems form a cohesive whole.

Are you a pagan who believes in archetypes? Awesome, I love talking about symbolism in mythology!

Atheist pagan? Well, nature is pretty inspiring all by itself without even having to add gods in the mix.

Wiccan? Let's talk about the turning of the wheel of the year and all of its many interfolded meanings.

Do you believe in faeries? Ghosts? Aliens? Come on under the umbrella and tell me about it!

I've been around long enough to see that we're all essentially on the same team, and collaborating together while accepting our differences makes our community stronger.

Today's is a question I've asked before, but I've met a lot of new people in the last year:

How many altars do you currently have?

I'll leave the definition of an altar up to you, because I think that what makes something an altar is believing it is one.

Today's :

Do you feel offended when modern TV shows or movies portray witches as evil antagonists?

Cat_LeFey, to random
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

I cannot believe there are still witches out there claiming to be from a long line of “hereditary” witches since before Gerald Gardener. Cringe. I really hope none of the kids are falling for this.

The witch-cult hypothesis has been robustly studied for nearly a century, and has been thoroughly disproven. This is common knowledge within the Pagan community.

There were many growing pains along the way, but now, we've accepted that we are re-creating and re-building paganism inspired by the ancients, not continuing any hidden unbroken traditions. And that's okay. It’s actually really special, being the first in your line, and creating traditions that might last into future generations.

Overheard conversation at the hospital:

Nurse: “Could you be pregnant?”
Patient: “No.”
“You've had a tubal ligation?”
“No.”
“Oh, so you could be pregnant?”
“No, my husband has a vasectomy.”
“Those aren't always 100%”
“Well, I haven't had sex since November, when I got sick.”
“When was your last period?”
“A couple weeks ago.”
“Okay, we're gonna go ahead and give you a pregnancy test, just to be sure.”

What kind of christofascist hellscape are we living in?

A lot of people living in cities don't realize that rural USA is a lot like those third-world countries a politician might describe as ‘shitholes.’

In my tiny village(which is basically a few far-apart houses and farms gathered around a swamp):

-No municipal water (we have a well)
-No sewer (septic tanks)
-No garbage disposal (burn it)
-No public school (There's one in the next town over, bus leaves at 630am, gets back 430pm)
-No public college (there's one in the next county, that means you pay out-of-county tuition which is double)
-No mail delivery (I have a PO box)
-No police (I actually love this, no complaints here)
-No fire/emergency services (volunteers are notified by the town siren, closest actual hospital is an hour flight by chopper after you've driven 40 minutes to the rural hospital, which is basically just triage)

Where do I live? In Michigan, but you'll never find my address cuz it's not even on Google Maps.

It's wild carrot season, also known as Queen Anne's Lace, or bird's nest. It's one of the most mis-identified plants I see here on the internet, which is dangerous because the lookalikes range from bad-rash to deadly-if-ingested. Supposedly how Socrates died, if you believe the tall tale.

See that little dark purpley central flower? It's supposed to make it look like a bug is already feasting on it, and it's the surest way to make an ID. Now, not every single wild carrot flower has this little doot, but if I'm planning on harvesting, I only take the ones that do, just so I can be absolutely certain I have the correct plant.
