Yes, it's easy to crack jokes online - I've seen many.

Yes, it's easy to feel like there's nothing to be done - because it's SCOTUS.

But equally: yes - we can demand Senate hearings, and we can make sure everyone knows about this.

Don't let this get swept under the rug.

Students have taken a building, and the police response is absolutely bonkers. Cops are being called in from 30 minutes away, OC Sheriff is involved, and helicopters are circling campus.

So, there's a person in my mentions complaining about the fact that I cited the NYT as a source for my toot from this morning.

While I do think the NYT has some issues, particularly around their editorial board, I don't think there's a grand conspiracy in them trying to deny Biden a second term.

I looked at the methodology used in the survey, and while I do have some questions around whether young voters are picking up the phone, it's also a reasonable survey w/ reasonable questions.

Why am I sharing this, you ask?

It's because I'm really worried that we're falling into traps that I saw in the lead-up to the 2016 elections as well.

Because of how social media and algorithms are designed these days, we are sliding backwards into silos where we only get the information that we like - e.g. take TikTok's FYP page.

Just because something doesn't fall into that curated feed, doesn't mean it's wrong, necessarily. It can always be examined and challenged, but it's not wrong.

Long story short:

  1. The NYT story from this morning had a decent sampling size, and

  2. Relatively decent methodology.

  3. It's showing what plenty of other pollsters AND behind the scenes people have indicated to me - Biden is in trouble, and needs help.

  4. The more we can stop letting media and personal bias impact how we view the news, especially around politics, the better.

  5. Please pick a Senator and MOC to adopt, because they're really going to need it.

What does this mean you ask? Honestly, tbd given this Congress.

A (probably) unlikely scenario would be if they choose to embrace the chaos, we could arrive at a Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (w/ the support of one or two GOP mods who clearly are quitting by November).

But the trade off would be those members would become incredibly powerful by default.
