Cheeseness

@Cheeseness@mastodon.social

I write, make, draw, play, game, and do handsome faces. I made Hive Time. Currently making Fossil Sweeper (a game about digging up fossils), Winter's Wake & Icicle (and a stack of side things).

My avatar is a stylised self portrait with short messy hair, set within a hexagonal shaped slice of cheese with holes in.

#nobridge should not be necessary -_-

Ouch - that's a new one for me, breakpoint conditionals with side effect .. e.g. appid = 3830 when I should have typed appid == 3830.

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

@TTimo Oh wow. That's new to me too. I'm sitting here thinking about how often I mistype and accidentally make a comparison an assignment in my code, and how I must have done this at some point without realising.

@TTimo How many times did I go to bed exhausted, questioning my sanity only to find things behaving fine in the morning =_=

So there was this running gag among the Star Trek TNG production designers about there being a location on the ship named "Cetacean Ops", showing up in signage that wasn't legible pre-HD and background chatter that wasn't meant to be heard. Lower Decks then formalized this as an actual seawater tank in the middle of the ship with 2 intelligent Beluga whales "working" there. And this is fanservice and it's not TOTALLY clear Lower Decks is canon, but thing is, after Star Trek IV, it makes sense,

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I like the reading that Cetacean Ops is an effort to ensure positive representation and conditions as a specific consequence of the events of Voyage Home

@mcc @irenes Yes! I love it

im starting to come to the realization that it's not that i don't want to make games for a living, it's that i don't want to make games in the ways that are required in order to successfully make them for a living

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko I empathise with/share these feelings.

I work hard to keep my overheads as low as possible (don't use a heater across winter, don't eat every day, don't have a car, etc. - I think I read that you do similar) and take freelance work from people I care about. That stuff helps in my case, but I'm lucky to even be able to do that, and it's not a healthy/safe work environment that lets me make the things I feel driven to make, which I think is ultimately what everybody deserves.

UBI, please.

This is it! Today's the day that I get a nice video of a butcherbird call! This time for sure!

Don't use real brands in your games/novels

Not because you can't, but because you often can in novels at least— but shouldn't, because you're giving mega corps free advertising.

I mean there's other good reasons too, like "inventing dumb fake brands is half the fun", but that's plenty reason already. Don't lick boots, even if they taste like Oreo.

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

@glassbottommeg @ja2ke I'm with Megan on this, but I also watched the Bill & Ted movies with a friend the other day, and I struggle to think of what would land as well as "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" does

Deleting all my GitHub repos today. Should've done this long ago.

Don't imagine many people have my stuff checked out, but if you do, feel free to update remotes to https://gitlab.com/Cheeseness

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

Done. My repo of example/experimental Neverball balls wasn't on GitLab, but is now. A couple of historic archives that I don't feel personally responsible for preserving (such as pre-Linden the Desurium client) haven't been migrated across.

On the off chance that anything somebody wants is gone, let me know and I'll see what I can scrounge up.

For at least a decade, I've been uncomfortable with the role that GitHub has played as keystone infrastructure for F/OSS projects. A large portion of the F/OSS ecosystem being beholden to a proprietary service using proprietary software seems fundamentally problematic. Last time I looked, GitHub doesn't even have a public issue tracker.

It's difficult for me to not see current LLM culture/implementation as tool for copyright laundering, and that also seems strongly at odds with F/OSS ideals.

@boilingsteam Yes, that's the part I've been uncomfortable with.

Organised a little 3D practice session with some friends, where we had 20 minute blocks to make stuff with a couple of optional prompts. Went over and under time on some, but my focus was having fun and learning New Blender (this was my first time using something newer than 2.7x). Hoping to make this a regular thing.

An untextured 3D sculpt of a starfish

Today's prompt was "tentacle". I made some fan art of a game I like/worked on. Haven't done much toon shading before, so I set up some of my materials the night before.

Another angle on this. Thinking I might expand it into a full 360 scene for the mid-week session

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

This week's prompt is "raft." I made this little sail raft

This week's prompt is "box." I sculpted this box(er)

Here's a timelapse of today's session. I find sculpting in Blender to be really relaxing, regardless of whether I'm making anything good or not

My community's just started using the "activity" feature I recently added to the website. This week's activity is "opposite" where we're encouraged to find a prompt and then create something that expresses an antonym or other inversion of it.

I made this geyser (opposite of "waterfall"). Blender's fluid sim continues to defy me, so I just sculpted the steam

Cheeseness,
@Cheeseness@mastodon.social avatar

This week's prompt is "cake." I made a little guy making little cakes
