The Daily Beast is reporting that Elon Musk ordered engineers to switch off his Starlink satellites just as Ukraine was preparing to attack the Russian naval fleet with drones. He said he feared nuclear retaliation by Russia. It’s high time we ask the question: How much power and influence does it make sense to hand just one person?

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@georgetakei A serious question is "how did Musk know they were launching an attack"? Does he actually hire spies to report on the Ukranian military? If so, that might be a violation of US law and certainly would be a violation of Ukranian law.

Quick note: If you follow me, you probably noticed that I post occasional photos. Unfortunately, the default display behavior on most Mastodon instances and clients crops many images unless you click on them. I hate this, as does every other photographer here, but it's not likely to change any time soon.

You can disable this broken behavior in the Mastodon web interface by unchecking a box under display preferences.

But in any case, please be aware you might not be seeing the whole photo.

@mattblaze Oh for crying out loud! I've been irritated by this since the very first day I signed up. Thank you for telling me abou this! It's bug pretending to be a feature.

@scalzi Thank goodness! I hate those things. I don't even have a QR code reader app on my phone and I don't intend to install one just read an occasional menu.

What's a food people aren't into because they haven't had it fresh?

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@ZachWeinersmith I once had a neighbor who hated tomatos until one year I grew a bunch and gave them to her famliy fresh picked from the vine. Turns out she just hated store bought tomatos that are picked before they are ripe and then stored in a refrigerator.

Why do so many fantasy and sci fi names for people and places end with -or? Do other languages have something like this?

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Did Tokien start it I wonder? Gondor. Mordor. Endor. Eriador. Valinor In Sindarin -dor is a word ending meaning "land" and it is equivalent to -nor in Quenya.

@georgetakei People with neck tattoos often make other poor decisions.

(Exception for people who do tattoos as art - that's cool.)

Econ question:

More and more I hear about remote workers whose jobs are "in" the US, basically because the dollar is powerful and the US is rich and still growing while a lot of the world isn't. Surprisingly to me I've heard this happening a lot even in Canada where you wouldn't think the benefits would be THAT big? How is this gonna affect macroecon numbers if it starts happening at scale?

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Are you meaning people who physically reside in the US but work for foreign companies, or the reverse?

So I watched The Dark Crystal with the 9 year old last night and it's always disappointing how weak of a movie it is. I found it only makes sense if you assume Henson just had lots of ideas for cool scenes with advanced puppets and then just loosely strung together a plot with vaguely fantasy-sounding dialog.

A Cold War pronunciation map of southern English towns for airmen, I believe. Some real crackers in here. "Tanbrydż-Łelz" is a personal favourite. As is "Dżylynem".

But it's OK if God does the killing, because everything God does is good by definition, and if you don't believe that you must be a Satanist. I mean, that's literally how it's always been described to me, at least.
