An excellent article from Minna Ålander on how the Nordic and Baltic countries are preparing.

This should be happening everywhere in the .

@hanse_mina So instead of going all out to try to mitigate and prepare for climate and ecological breakdown, we're ramping up arms production preparing for war, because of one mental nutter.

If I had a website trying to flog stuff to the public, I really wouldn't have a cookies pop up which potential clients can't get past without choosing which cookies they will or will not accept. As a potential client of someone with such a website, I've exercised my choice and gone somewhere else.

This afternoon's exercise: stripping and servicing a Tirfor-pattern winch.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@withaveeay @simon_brooke Yeah that look a bit worrying, and expensive if it goes wrong! I got mine after getting a quote of £3 grand from a tree surgeon to deal with some trees at the side of the house. So I bought some gear, took my time and got it all done. Nothing got broke, nobody got hurt, result for a fraction of the quote. And I still have the stuff which does get used if only occasionally.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fedops @simon_brooke Yup it does suck bigtime. If it ever breaks I'd probably be as well just to chuck it and buy a copy. It's not something I use often, it was bought for a specific job, but boy does it come in handy when it's needed! There's trees, and therefore firewood I simply would not have tackled without it.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@withaveeay @simon_brooke Before y'all go running off thinking hey I've got a problem tree, I'll do a bit of lumberjacking myself, please don't it's really fucking dangerous! I have the benefit of being into rock climbing when younger, so my rope work is pretty safe, I know what knots to tie when, I have a pretty good appreciation of what is and is not a good anchor. And I'd been using a chainsaw for firewood for years. With non of that experience I wouldn't have dreamed of tackling that.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fedops @simon_brooke Mine is the smallest Tirfor, but it does haul pretty damn good for a little un.

I'm going to have to replace my eight year old MacBook; it's beyond the point I can afford to keep repairing it. I really want the next one to be the last laptop I ever buy: we cannot afford to keep generating e-waste.

My current thought is a @frameworkcomputer, mainly for repairability. Does anyone have alternative suggestions for a very long life laptop? Low power consumption is also desirable, UN*X/Linux of some kind required.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fedops @simon_brooke We had basically a 3 year service life for dev machines, high end powerful good quality machines. Old ones were sent for destruction as sensitive info on hard drives. Apparently to much bother to pull the hard drives and send the rest for recycling or whatever. What a waste of perfectly good powerful machines.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fedops @simon_brooke It's tragic. I did eventually manage to snaffle one for myself, I did ask, all above board nothing nefarious, an i7 with 32GB.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@dmbaturin @fedops @simon_brooke I agree, I think it's more a procedural / compliance thing, the organisation has to be see to be "doing the right thing" and have the paperwork to prove it. If the shit ever hits the fan you really have to be able to demonstrate you followed correct protocols.

So, the French And Spanish companies building the wind farm, and who the profits will go to, with equipment manufactured in China and UAE are flogging half the output to probably power Amazons' data centres, which as we all know are essential for the survival of civilisation (sic). But it's ok because there will be 70 jobs in Scotland. When will we ever learn that flogging off your natural resources for peanuts is a really really awful plan.

Can the USA be called a civilised country? They support and supply arms to a regime murdering 10s of 1000s of civilians while cutting off aid to those civilians. They watch while people trying to cross border drown, actively preventing rescue. They may elect a rapist to be president, it's not that they think he didn't do it, it is they don't care if he did. They force women to bear the children of men who have raped them. Not all citizens support this, but it is happening under current regime.

If you’re breaking the law to get yourself or your family medical care (reproductive care, gender care), don’t tell anyone. Seriously. Don’t expect your friend or uninvolved family member to not snitch.

You’re going out of town for shopping or to hunt or to see a new town or none of your god damned business or whatever else. Don’t talk about buying HRT or abortion pills.

And remember a friend now could “see the light” and become a fundamentalist tomorrow. Protect yourself.

Scotland Welcomed Increasing Numbers of Visitors Summer 2023

1,438,000 visitors came to Scotland last year between July and September - the peak tourist months. This is 14% more than visited over the same period before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. During summer 2023 Scotland welcomed visitors in ever increasing numbers: Figures for July to September 2019 - 2023

@fionaorkneynews I know, it's too busy now. After lunch maybe fancy a wee stroll up to hidden valley? Nope no parking spaces left. Maybe a wee wander round the lower slopes of The Buachaille? Nope no parking spaces left. Maybe a wander along the old military road? Nope no parking spaces left. Before lockdown it wasn't like that, it was generally possible to go to these places without getting there at 7:30AM or just forget it. It's sucking the joy out of the place.

Kinloss and Kinross: two completely different places, miles and miles apart.

Yet, whenever I read about one or the other I have to think really hard about where they are located.

Do you have places you sometimes confuse?

@fitheach Was once asked by an American tourist for directions to what sounded like "a roacher". If we hadn't been at Loch Lomond I'm not sure I'd have worked out he was looking for Arrocher.
