It now appears the Post Office accounting system called Capture before the Horizon system, was also likely faulty and could cause shortfalls. My dad was a sub-postmaster during that period and did suffer significant shortfalls which he had to make up. I know he didn't take it. It had a very significant effect on his mental health and pretty much ruined his later years.

Good morning, friends. 💮💮💮

18 January 2023

My Harley-Davidson motorcycle is finally in the shop. I called the Harley dealer in Alexandria and asked if they would come and pick it up for me and they were more than happy to do so. The bike is a 2005 Dyna Super Glide Custom, I bought it brand new 18 years ago. I did some addition customization, foot pegs, wind shield, and a sissy bar. The dealer tells me that some relays need replacing, it also needs a service, and I'm seriously considering adding leather saddle bags. I know that there must be some motorcycle enthusiast out there; what do you think about adding saddle bags?

My wife is not thrilled about me riding.

“He had changed. And not for the good. He was using strong language - filthy in her estimation - and had become totally immersed in the restoration of the motorcycle.”

@Swede1952 I have hard panniers, they came with the bike. I leave one on the bike most of the time, it's just handy to have something attached to the bike to throw stuff in. If I don't want any on it takes seconds to remove them.

Coldest so far this year, down to -7c during the night.

To-day, when we were heading to the we went down the ploughed & salted glen road. It was easier to walk there than the deep snow on the verges.

As we were walking down, a large 4x4 tooted at us to get out of the way.

5 mins later, we caught up with the 4x4. It was stuck in the snow on the first uphill section. I offered them my "husky" to pull them up.

Later, we found the 4x4 abandoned at the bottom of the hill.

Laugh? I nearly wet myself laughing.

@fitheach Once saw a bloke who'd stopped at the bottom of an icy hill then tried to advance by revving furiously and dropping the clutch, he was sat there with wheels spinning. not moving. He was really infuriated by other drivers not stopping at the bottom of the hill but just driving round him and going up the hill without issue.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach Exactly, and now he'd nicely polished the ice under his driving wheels it wouldn't be possible to go forward from that position at all. I did consider offering advice, e.g. back up a bit and take a run at it, but judging by the look on his face he wasn't in a receptive frame of mind 😡

OK, here's my precious BBC Micro, which hasn't been switched on for about twenty years, and for about twelve years of that was stored in a damp shed. It's been in the house – and therefore reasonably dry – for six months. What precautions do I need to take before I experiment with switching it on again?

@Naich @simon_brooke Do this yes, definitely do this 👍

Moving my website to a new platform got me thinking.

I first had my website & domain in 1998. Before that, I had webspace with ScotlandOnline.

Since 1998, I've utilised the following technologies for my website:

  • hand-coded HTML
  • my own database & scripts
  • txt2tags
  • Plone
  • Django/Mezzanine
  • Pelican (latest)

It has been a fantastic journey and learning exercise.

I recommend everyone should have their own website. Don't worry about the technology, just do it.

@fitheach My first website, probably around 1999 or thereabouts, was one where folks could download screensavers I'd made. All hand coded html, hosted on webspace from my then service provider. I did it purely as a learning exercise and something to show potential employers. It stayed up for years after I left that service provider, but vanished some time ago. It served is purpose well, had a fair bit of traffic with a shedload of screensaver downloads.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach Tbh I can't remember, it was some long forgotten screen saver producing software, but no idea what it was called. For Windows platform.

My car has front and rear parking sensors, the car beeps at you when you get close to objects. When the sensors are iced up (the rear ones at least) they think you are very close to something and beep. Not only is there beeping, the brakes are also applied so I cant actually move backwards, and I can't find any way to turn the system off! FFS! Madness. Now worried if driving in snow and the front sensors get covered in snow, will the brakes suddenly come on and I get rear ended?

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

After some dialogue with Skoda. It turns out the manouvering braking can be turned off via a menu, and apparently it won't come to a screeching stop if the front sensors are faulty e.g. iced up, it will give a warning message that the front sensors are not functioning as expected.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach The rear window yes, the rear side windows no, not on mine anyway.

I was involved in a short discussion about hair ice. It surprised me that other people, in Scotland, had never seen hair ice. For me, it is a very common sight.

To see hair ice one needs frosty conditions, suitable wood (deciduous branches are good, particularly beech), and, crucially, the presence of Exidiopsis effusa. Currently, I have an abundance of all three elements.

To-day, I found several examples, after a quick search. The attached photo was the best.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach Loads of it here just now.

Glencoe,
@Glencoe@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach I thought it is pretty common, surprised it isn't. Another bit from today's dog walk (among many other bits), a big bit, dog lead for scale.

@fitheach If I'd enough hair left to worry about. I'd have asked who it's hairdresser is 😂

Ok mastodon, (or at least the part of it currently going through a big freeze), show me your strange ice pictures, your weird ice spikes, needle ice, hair ice and frazil ice, your beautiful ice crystals.

Is a thing year? It should be. I'll start.
