It's kind of messed up that my one big Roger Corman memory was the time 20th Century Fox hired him to make a Fantastic Four movie that was never intended for release.

Like something straight out of Air Bud (1997), there was nothing in the rules that said anyone ever has to see the film, they just needed to make a Fantastic Four movie before the license expired in order to hold onto the license.

It's a good thing they did, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to make two other unconnected Fantastic Fours and be working on a third right now.

HunterZ,
@HunterZ@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@nyquildotorg somehow hadn't heard of this, so I'm watching it now. Seems pretty terrible - yet not that far out of the mold of the Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films of its era.

The Task Bar is such garbage. I plugged in a second monitor and was wondering if there was a way to get my pinned apps to appear on the secondary Task Bar.

...Toggled an unrelated setting off and back on while poking around Settings, and boom they all suddenly appeared.

I wanted to give it an honest go, but given that this is clearly an amateur knockoff of the much superior Task Bar from previous Windows releases, I may as well look at third-party options lol.

These absolute fartwaffles can’t conceive of anyone having moral objections to bad things, because they don’t think people who aren’t like themselves have any value.

No, there must be some other reason.

Peer pressure. Not enough sex on campus (yes, really, Google it). Soros paying them. Antisemitism. Brainwashing.

Anything but the simplest explanation: good people demanding that bad people stop what they’re doing.

Unpopular opinion: “Potential reuse” (and with it to a lesser extend “avoiding tech debt”) is such a scourge on programming.

It rarely actually happens, because by the time you could maybe actually at least partially reuse something some other new shiny framework is in use so you end up writing it from scratch anyway.

@thomasfuchs it depends. Most of my almost 2 decades at work has been spent on the same code that originated in the late 1990s. I wish I could rewrite it from scratch, but it's too big.

Networking nerds, give me home LAN upgrade advice!

Current situation (needs are in post #2) is as follows:

I have 1000/25 internet now, and my R7000 FreshTomato router + WiFi AP only supports that WAN speed if I overclock it to 1.2GHz.

A Cat 5e run connects that to an Asus RT-N66U at the opposite end of the house, which acts as a secondary AP+switch.

These are both downstairs, but we have a second floor. The kids complain about unstable WiFi upstairs.

HunterZ,
@HunterZ@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

What I'm looking for:

  • A router + WiFi AP with proper 1Gbps WAN support, and the ability to redirect DNS to a pihole instance on the LAN

  • WiFi mesh networking for seamless roaming around the house, which can take advantage of - but not be limited to - Ethernet backhaul (would like the option to put an AP at the front and/or upstairs parts of the house, where Ethernet isn't currently an option)

HunterZ,
@HunterZ@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@thomasfuchs people rave about UniFi, but this stuff looks totally overkill for my needs. We're talking maybe 2 dozen devices on my home LAN in a mix of ethernet and WiFi.

I don't want a rackmount anything lol.

I think it would be nice to have something that supports a mesh of 3 APs: 1 at (or combined with) the WAN router, 1 at the far end of the house via Cat 5e, and maybe 1 upstairs and/or at the front of the house via WiFi only.

So much pearl clutching going on here regarding the Apple antitrust lawsuit.

I think it's great that the US government is making an attempt to rein in rampant anticompetitive behavior among US tech companies. It's been far too long, and it had to start somewhere. Apple is as guilty as anyone else, and we all know it.

The problem with CI/CD is that it sometimes takes days to get through the learning curve and/or work through project-specific weirdness, so it's actually possible that it takes more effort than you'd spend in total doing manual builds + releases of your project lol

Plus it's unsatisfying when a web runner takes 3 minutes to build something that takes only 30 seconds in my local environment due to per-run overhead like standing up tooling.

I'm not opposed to the idea of Blink/Chromium-based browsers the way a lot of folks are. I think there's something to be said for all the work improving one browser potentially benefitting people that don't even use it, due to cherrypicking and upstream merges.

I think the important part, though, is that users have an opportunity to pay for a browser's upkeep and development with actual money rather than by being funnelled into advertising mechanisms.

HunterZ,
@HunterZ@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@nyquildotorg I'm not willing to pay for web browsers, especially since we're realistically talking about a subscription and not a one-time fee.

Honestly it should be possible for the Internet community to maintain a completely non-commercial FOSS web browser, but it hasn't happened because companies have always sucked all the oxygen out of the room with partially-FOSS offerings.

HunterZ, to random
@HunterZ@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Having been roped into becoming a DevSecOps focal on one of the projects I support at work, I'm now tempted to try enabling CI/CD pipelines for some of my FOSS projects.

Currently looking at GitHub Actions, and it's a bit overwhelming - in no small part because apparently you need to embed vcpkg into your project as a Git submodule if you want the pipeline to use it.

I was toying with pulling in a non-packaged dependency as a submodule instead of clone-and-own anyway though.

HunterZ,
@HunterZ@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Got the dependency and vcpkg both rigged up as submodules (with relative paths to support both HTTPS and SSH cloning, no less), and...checkmate lmao.

Microsoft's GitHub wants me to use Microsoft's vcpkg as a submodule, but Microsoft's vcpkg wants me to install it outside my repo because Microsoft's Windows can't handle long paths.

Why is everyone but Apple so embarrassingly bad at building ecosystems ffs.

Not being a trained UI/UX designer, I've heard of the MVC (model-view-controller) architecture but never really looked into it.

I'm perusing various articles on it, and...they don't agree at all on what MVC is / how it works!

There appear two be two camps:

  1. Controller mediates all interactions between View and Model.
  2. Controller mediates only View-triggered Model updates, while Model and View collaborate directly on View updates.

Make up your minds, UI/UX developers! You're confusing me!
