Anyone on the TL uses a synthesis table for lit review?

Basically organizing ideas across multiple of themes from multiple sources in a spreadsheet

https://case.fiu.edu/writingcenter/online-resources/_assets/synthesis-matrix-2.pdf

https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/synthesis-matrix

How could this be used for design work?🤔

Each cell could represent an example of a certain level of fidelity and modality in graphic design, information design & UI design work which could be used to identify common properties and principles

As you write your review, you will work horizontally in the row belonging to each point discussed. As you combine the information presented in each row, you will begin to see each section of your paper taking shape. Remember, some of the sources may not cover all of the main ideas listed on the left, but that can be useful also. The gaps on your chart could provide clues about the gaps in the current state of knowledge on your topic. CREATING YOUR SYNTHESIS MATRIX It is probably best to begin your chart by labeling the columns both horizontally and vertically. The sample chart below illustrates how to do this. Topic: ______________________________________ Source #1 Source #2 Source #3 Source #4 Main Idea A Main Idea B Label the columns across the top of your chart with the author’s last name or with a few keywords from the title of the work. Then label the sides of the chart with the main ideas that your sources discuss about your topic. As you read each source, make notes in the appropriate column about the information discussed in the work, as shown in the following chart.

Yes, definitely used synthesis tables for lit review.

I’m not a designer, but it seems like designers often prefer to avoid that level of prescriptive structure. Like, they’d prefer to do almost the same thing, but with colored sticky notes, and the flexibility to say different things about different sources.

It is actually "la baba" in Spanish, usually translated as drool. So I could see maybe going with something like "Te Cae La Baba" (you're drooling) as a name for, I dunno, a food truck.

But yeah, that's probably a different Baba.

Hi folks, I know folks mean well when they post information on news events, but PLEASE vet your sources before reposting dramatic articles/etc. you see. If you're not familiar with the publication, DON'T POST IT. Or check on the source...

For example, I recently saw an article posted from the Daily Caller, which is essentially a channel for white supremacist propaganda, interspersed with other normal news.

Is there any legal system in the world where inside courtrooms there is an official who is simply there to observe judicial conduct of judges?

Who tracks the quality of their judgements in accordance to the constitutional values and legal standards, to check abuse of authority

In the US there are several civil society court observer groups who do this. This review article discusses several: https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/keeping-eye-courts-survey-court-observer-programs

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:

  1. Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
  2. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)

(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )

I, too, would like to know about the squirrels. My husband has a bird/squirrel feeder attached to his office window. There could be entertainment potential there.

Here are a few ideas:

In terms of conferences, you might find good discussions at https://openeducationconference.org/ and OEGlobal.

Also some in the open education channel of the Creative Commons Slack (many folks in that community care about openness beyond licensing).

Not sure where they hang out online, but maybe there is an Ungrading community.

Also the OE4BW program.

Even as someone who mostly replies, I think these would be good features to have. If someone really only wants to talk to their followers or mutuals, I don’t want to be there. Giving people mod power over their replies appeals to me less.

Maybe until the feature is built folks could experiment with a hack, like start with # for followers only and ## for mutuals only? Some Twitter features started as hacks like that.

How did you overcome your fear of failure or help your students overcome it?

I have one general piece of advice on fear of failure that people say is pretty good. It’s specific to journal rejections, though, which is before you submit an article make a list of at least 3 other potential journals you could submit to. That way when you get a rejection (we all get rejections!) you don’t need to dwell. Just incorporate any useful feedback and submit to the next journal.

Thinking about what skills could a librarian learn from DJs

Audibooks on LP was / is a thing! You could do this. I bet you could get gigs at book festivals.

Also might be a way to close down a venue at last call. Start mixing in more spoken word until it's just someone reading a classic novel or poetry.

They should give out a ‘welcome to Murica’ info pack to immigrants. Chapters: health insurance, how to write a check, why are money transfers often not instant, what the heck is a strip mall, if it’s a ‘nice neighborhood’ look closely for the racism, why are there no shops and restaurants in residential areas, they put mayo instead of butter into sandwiches, and if you don’t have a drivers license you don’t exist (just explained all of this in one afternoon to friends who just moved here)

Let me say it louder for the people in the back… heading levels (h1, h2, h3…) in html are not about size, they are about structure. They communicate the organization of your page.

An h2-heading in one part of your page or site does not have to be the same size as an h2-heading in another part or your page or site. The purpose of the heading is to semantically communicate hierarchy.

In fact, deciding that all h2 headings must be the same size across your website will usually lead to poor decisions with regards to the underlying structure of your page.

So yes, the heading in your footer should likely be an h2 but it doesn’t have to be the same size as the h2 in an article. And no you shouldn’t make it an h4 ”because I want it smaller”!

This may be one of the most misunderstood elements of web design.

JMMaok,
@JMMaok@mastodon.online avatar

@axbom

A question: if you adjust the size of the heading, how does it communicate the structure of your page to someone who is reading the display, not the code? It seems like an H2 that is the same size as an H4 would tell that reader “this is an H4”.

Do techbros in bay area use public transport? Or is it more uber/lyft

I think nothing gets you a deep reality check than seeing a sea of depressed exhausted faces jam packed in a crowded train

There is something visceral about travelling in public transport day in and day out, that jolts you out of the bubble of few people you engage with via your screens

You realize vastness of the world, the amount of people that exist & how easy it is to forget how each person is a universe unto themselves

JMMaok,

Lots of good advice in the thread already. The ADA is based on the concept of reasonable accommodations being negotiated on a case by case basis. So to the extent your friend, or people helping your friend, can clearly articulate the reasonable accommodations that allow your friend to fulfill the job requirements, that will help. This info is needed alongside the medical documentation of disability.

I’m not who you asked, but you might be interested in the Open Science syllabus I created (Wikiversity link in my bio.) My process involved starting from the Creative Commons Certificate course, which I had taken, and adapting their syllabus and assignments. It seems like it might work for your project (~10 units). Their syllabus is open for students to choose a variety of assignments to demonstrate learning (songs, games, case studies, more …).

Moving very fast in the wrong direction is not progress.

Trying to catch up and hold on to something that is moving very fast in the wrong direction doesn't make you "ahead of the game".

Best is to wave gently and wish them good luck. Make yourself comfortable, read a good book. Sooner or later they will come back around and ask how you can be so far ahead. 😁❤️

We've all heard time and again "this won't make any difference to the Republican base." And, it's true, they've been remarkably consistent in their support for Trump.

Yet, statements like that are always only true until, eventually, they aren't.

This recent NPR story, headline "GOP support for Trump softens as the former president's legal troubles mount" reports a shift in poll results. https://www.npr.org/2023/07/28/1190748917/trump-republican-support-independents-indictment-january-6-poll

Consider that context before throwing another "nothing matters" on the pile.
