Retired from IT, thank God! Into photography, writing, fountain pens and choral singing. Fighting and losing the eternal battle against typos. Ugly old married dude who is not looking to get laid. At the age where I get all the aches and pains, but none of the senior's discounts. I boost a lot. Avatar is a black and white photograph of an at best nondescript older guy. #Photography #Writing #BlackAndWhite #Toronto

I’m sure the only plan Ford and his owners have for climate change is to move to mansions in gated communities with high security to insulate themselves from climate change-related unrest.

Perhaps an unpopular statement, but not everyone who owns a house in is rich. There are a good number of “house poor” people who while they may own a house, are living on a fixed income, are an elderly senior etc. and can’t maintain the property. I’ll bet there are ways to integrate the house poor into housing solutions (more multi-generational housing, downsizing on place, allowing city-subsidized micro-housing units in back yards etc.). 1/2

Curious (like millions of others) what will happen with Trump today.

Of course in the west, while marginalized people spend years in jail for petty crime and white men of power & influence often wriggle out of accountability, I wouldn't be surprised if the bond amount gets substantially cut and/or delayed, and/or he gets a shadowy investor to buy him and get him off the hook.

Or maybe I'll be dead wrong and today will be the true beginning of the end for him. That would make my day.

If I were an American I'd be really worried about how the next few days will play out. I suspect Trump will get a last minute infusion of strings-attached miracle money to pay the hundreds of millions he owes for the bond. Trump is willing to sell your future, and the future of your children to the highest bidder, who will get an alarming amount of influence in exchange. In Trump's universe every American except him is expendable; only Trump matters. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/opinions/trump-bond-financial-problems-ghitis/index.html

Ford's fixation on low density housing as the only acceptable solution to the crisis really shows who the only people he cares about are. https://www.thestar.com/politics/provincial/doug-ford-promises-1-8b-to-help-cities-build-infrastructure-for-housing-but-shoots-down/article_e0c4dd84-e77a-11ee-80fd-c3868adc262f.html

"Ax the Tax" vs. "Pierre Doesn't Care." Whoever sells rhyming dictionaries to Canadian political parties must be raking it in these days!

My definition of a 21st century politician: somone who, if he heard that the idea of skewering bablies was suddenly popuar with voters, would on the street with a pitchfork in 60 seconds.

Back in the day, a politician would have killed their career by saying something like this. Nowadays, it was just another day. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/trump-israel-democrats-1.7148147?cmp=rss

One of the scary things about is that his political posture all bolls down to attacking the enemy, Trudeau. When he defeats Trudeau, he will need new enemies to focus his venom (and that of his base) on. Otherwise the whole ediface comes tumbling down. Who will the mortal enemy be? How dangerous will it be to not be a straight white climate change denier?

Two great things about secondhand book stores:

  1. When you buy a physical book it stays yours.
  2. The odds are higher that it wasn’t vomited out by an AI algorithm.

The typical right winger (and mushy middle) Canadian will look at this and

a) blame Trudeau (and yes I get it; the Liberals deserve a lot of blame, bu so do the Cons.)

b) not be too worried about holding O & G to account

c) insist on no personal lifestyle changes

d) whine that no one warned them when their suburban mansion catches fire.

If the US manages to avoid a Trumpian dictatorship in November (and I don't think the odds are good) will Americans pause for sober reflection on how close they came to losing ther democracy or in a fit of American Exceptionalism will they just pat themselves on the back and claim "only America" could have avoided this calamity? #uspol

Whenever I hear a Republican male speak, I can't help but feel we could increase the popularity of the word "smegma" by giving it a new, non-medical meaning.

I'm sure the same people who call Biden's high energy performance at SOTU last night as crazy and unhinged would have called a more subdued speech by Biden a sign of an old man without the energy or passion to be president. I'll bet many had two different opinion pieces written in advance, ready to attack regardless of which Biden they got.

The SCOTUS didn’t “get it wrong”; they delivered exactly what was paid for. They are basically an order fulfilment organization now. It won’t surprise me in the least if they provide Trump the immunity that he is demanding. I think the only people who will be surprised are those who think that the US still has the rule of law in effect.

Jgmeadows, to random
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

Is anyone actually surprised at what is happening in the US? Both their legal and political systems seem powerless in the face of someone determined to destroy democracy and the rule of law, who has milions of Americans and a good chunk of the media on his side.

Misguided belief in American Exceptionalism won't do anything for you this time around.

I can see society’s epitaph as follows:

“Today seems almost exactly the same as yesterday, so nothing is really changing, at least nothing that affects me personally right now, so it doesn’t matter who I vote for, or even if I vote at all, and anyway this conversation is boring and a real downer, so I want to go watch Netflix.”
