Retired from IT, thank God! Into photography, writing, fountain pens and choral singing. Fighting and losing the eternal battle against typos. Ugly old married dude who is not looking to get laid. Why does!! The city of Toronto!!! Make it so hard!! To dispose of minor hazardous waste!!!!

I got a chance to use a car today so I'm like damn I'm gonna get rid of these paint cans and swelling batteries! And now I'm all the way out at the transfer station

They're closed for Easter Monday!!!!

The transfer station is right here but the gate is closed!!!

What am I supposed to do with these paint cans!!!

Toronto consists of a dense urban area (where nobody has cars) within a ring of freeways, and a relatively less dense suburban area without.

All the city's hazardous waste dropoff points are outside the freeway ring, essentially inaccessible without a car. Also the waste stations by policy only accept dropoffs transported by car.

There's a city pickup service for hazardous waste. By policy it doesn't come to apartments. Guess how helpful that is in the city center!!!

On the one hand, Danielle Smith is timing the re-instatement of the Provincial Fuel Tax at the same time that the Carbon Tax is raised, so she can blame all price increases on the Federal government instead of the Provincial government.

What is most disturbing of all however, is the fact that the CPC and the UCP are constantly telling us that multi-billion dollar oil corporations should not pay their own taxes, but should pass the buck to us and make us consumers pay their taxes for them!! /1

TL;DR Increase profit and wealth tax, decrease worker's income tax.

This is the right way, and this is the path all progressive governments in North America have been moving towards, and what every regressive Conservative government has been fighting against. Most notably the CPC and their "Axe the Tax" campaign.

The editor of Ohio's most essential news organization felt compelled to tell readers that the paper's "north star" in the Trump era is truth, period.

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2024/03/our-trump-reporting-upsets-some-readers-but-there-arent-two-sides-to-facts-letter-from-the-editor.html

What's demoralizing is that almost no other top editors in the business are willing to say this so plainly -- to make clear that their organizations will refuse to give any ink, much less equal ink, to the relentless liars who are poisoning our public discourse.

Big Journalism needs to find its spine, pronto.

REMINDER: The carbon tax exists for Ontarians because cancelled the existing cap and trade program.

Premier Ford, as usual, is all over social media childishly blaming others for this colossal mistake..

"Ontario is waking up to the world’s worst April Fools’ joke. The Liberal carbon tax went up a whopping 23 per cent today [3 CENTS, Doug] — and guess who hasn’t said a peep? The Queen of the Carbon Tax herself, Bonnie Crombie." - Doug Ford

If Canadians elect a Conservative government, we will have BOTH the federal govt and most provinces dancing around any serious climate policy.

The Conservative's "AxeTheTax" misinformation media blitz has convinced many people that gasoline prices are going up 23% today. 🤦‍♂️

"In practice, a terrorist is anyone the IDF has killed in the areas in which its forces operate," said one Israeli reservist."
"It's quite possible that Palestinians who never held a gun in their lives were elevated to the rank of 'terrorist' posthumously, at least by the IDF," Haaretz noted.

Not sure what to make out of this one ... except it's yet another excuse for the IOF shoot-to-kill policy.

Reality check:
To be legitimately worried about the impact of an added 3¢ carbon price on you gas, it seems to me it would need to add at least half a percent of your income.

Alberta median household income >$100,000
0.5% of $100,000 = $500
$500 at 3¢/litre = $16,000 worth of fuel
At an inflated average price of $1.50/l
… you bought 11,000 litres of fuel.
You drive enough to use up the tank on an F-150 at least twice a week.

That means you are the problem.

So many overlapping holidays this weekend, because Easter was so much earlier than usual and most other holidays have set dates. Easter Sunday fell on Trans Day of Visibility this year, and Easter Monday falls on April Fools.

Just to clarify for some of the bigots out there, nobody "picked" Trans Day of Visibility to fall on Easter Sunday, lol. It's been the same date since 2009. It's Easter that landed on that date this year.

If you used 100 litres of gas every week, you'll be paying, by my calculation, a carbon tax of about $216 a quarter. Here's the rebate the feds will pay per quarter, for a single person, regardless of how much fuel you use. Next payment: April 15

Carbon tax critics have the slogans. But where is their plan for the climate crisis?

"Axe the Tax!" does not give much evidence of what the Conservative leader intends to do about the central challenge of our times

I have a playlist on Soundcloud of my own original rock music and I’d love for you to check it out, preferably on some good speakers, up loud. I’m really proud of this, and would love to hear what you think.

If you have “I like music” in your profile, you must listen. It’s the law!! 🫶

Boosts very much appreciated! 🤗

HT to @wdormann here - somebody has backdoored the open source project XZ which has downstream impacts.

For example, although OpenSSH doesn’t use XZ, Debian patch OpenSSH and introduced a dependency which translates as the XZ changes introducing a sshd authentication bypass backdoor it appears.

One dude bothered to investigate in his free time about why ssh was running slow, so it was caught fairly early - i.e. hopefully before distros started bundling it.
