Retired from IT, thank God! Into photography, writing, fountain pens and choral singing. Fighting and losing the eternal battle against typos. Ugly old married dude who is not looking to get laid. At the age where I get all the aches and pains, but none of the senior's discounts. I boost a lot. Avatar is a black and white photograph of an at best nondescript older guy. #Photography #Writing #BlackAndWhite #Toronto

If I were an American I'd be really worried about how the next few days will play out. I suspect Trump will get a last minute infusion of strings-attached miracle money to pay the hundreds of millions he owes for the bond. Trump is willing to sell your future, and the future of your children to the highest bidder, who will get an alarming amount of influence in exchange. In Trump's universe every American except him is expendable; only Trump matters. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/opinions/trump-bond-financial-problems-ghitis/index.html

Saw a headline on the Toronto Star site this morning: "What are Canadians willing to sacrifice in the fight against climate change?" It seems to me the answer in many, perhaps most cases is absolutely nothing. And right wing parties are in the ascendancy across the country as they go out of the way to validate voter selfishness.

Glad that Olivia Chow is our new mayor in Toronto, but sadly Ford & his right wing owners have many tools at their disposal to sabotage anything she tries to do. Too many Toronto voters have accepted the trade-off of a city that is in decline after 13 years of right wing mayors, as long as their property taxes don’t go up. All Ford has to do is not provide any funding (or indeed download even more costs), and get the media to blame Chow for the fallout. And people will fall for it.

When the Republicans finally get around to selecting a new speaker, maybe the winner should take the oath of office using a copy of The Lord of The Flies instead of the Bible. Seems to me a book about squabbling children would be most appropriate.

Perhaps an unpopular statement, but not everyone who owns a house in is rich. There are a good number of “house poor” people who while they may own a house, are living on a fixed income, are an elderly senior etc. and can’t maintain the property. I’ll bet there are ways to integrate the house poor into housing solutions (more multi-generational housing, downsizing on place, allowing city-subsidized micro-housing units in back yards etc.). 1/2

According to many polls, at the moment the feelings of many Canadians can be summed up as “I’m pissed off at how bad things are right now, so next time around I will vote for someone who will make things even worse.”

The 1% convincing the average person that their tiny teaspoon of privilege depends on the continued existence (indeed expansion) of gallons and gallons of 1% privilege is the most successful con of all time.

Yesterday on Facebook I was grousing about how people deliberately misrepresent the concept of the 15 minute neighboorhood, and a FB friend claimed the 15 minute neighbourhood would mean no access for ambulance and fire trucks. I wished it had just been some random yahoo. It's sad to see people you know taken in by such BS.

Saddened but not surprised by the election results in Alberta. Smith in Alberta, Ford in Ontario, the shit show in US red states and Trump with a huge lead to be the GOP nominee again, between the two large cohorts of ignorant/entitled who vote these types in and the apathetic who don’t vote at all, we are truly doomed.

The world is facing crises that require solutions that will need to rise above partisanship, and require the 1% to pay their share. So naturally we are going the other way.

Interesting price comparison: I am seeing online sale of some older Thinkpads (a few years old, great for Linux). To go from 8 gb RAM to 16gb is an extra $30. Contrast with an Mac Mini M2; to go from 8gb to 16gb of RAM is $250. What a rip off.

Primary School starts this morning in Toronto. I was out for a walk last night, and on a street with a 40 kph speed limit, cars were routinely doing 60 kph. I wonder how many kids will be injured or god-forbid killed this school year on their way to/from school by drivers who feel the rules of the road don’t really apply to them? In this auto-erotic city, sadly I’m sure the number won’t be zero.

I used to shoot film 99% of the time, but have switched to mainly digital due to the cost of film and repair of cranky old cameras, I have to say I’m tired of the judgement I get from some film photographers. Get over yourselves! I’ve seen great images done by a smart phone, and boring, uninspiring images done on a 8x10 view camera. The final result is what matters, not the size of your gear collection! (And yes I’ve see the same thing from the digital side of the argument).

I got suspended from commenting on the Globe and Mail site for 24 hours for saying that there isn't a right wing politician in Canada who isn't busy fellating the O & G industry. I guess they didn't like the metaphor...

Had to re-install on my T2 2020 MacBook Air (external SSD that had the previous install flaked out). And now even though WIFI seems awake (I used a T2-enabled Kubuntu build), I can’t get it to connect to my network at home. Sigh. It’s one of those days when I wish I could trade this Mac for a ThinkPad of roughly the same vintage; they make great Linux machines!

Both north and south of the border, the right is making huge strides against a tired and divided centre-left. People don't seem to understand what is at stake.

No matter where you look in Canada, Canadians are proving we are just as susceptible to right-wing bullshit as everybody else. There is nothing special about us.

If you don't like the fact that a heated seat in your car is a paid subscription, have you considered doing without? (Speaking as a grumpy old-timer who somehow survived without heated car seats in minus 40 Canadian prairie winters in the late 60s' to mid-70's). Whine all you want, but your actions and $$$ are what enable the 1%.

If the US manages to avoid a Trumpian dictatorship in November (and I don't think the odds are good) will Americans pause for sober reflection on how close they came to losing ther democracy or in a fit of American Exceptionalism will they just pat themselves on the back and claim "only America" could have avoided this calamity?

Interesting article. Sadly in Canada in terms of leadership, as far as major parties are concerned we can choose between greenwashing/lipservice, and full-on bend over and spread your cheeks obedience to O & G. And the average Canadian rejects any climate change solutions that require any kind of lifestyle change on their part. https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2023/12/us/countries-climate-change-emissions-cop28/

The problem with transportation in Canada: taking public transit is seen by most as much less sexy than driving a big black luxury SUV. A lot of people see transit users as losers, by definition. And I don't see this changing any time soon.

I think the newsworthy part of this story (apart from the existence of the video) is the driver was actually sentenced to some jail time. https://www.cp24.com/news/video-shows-dramatic-crash-on-toronto-highway-that-got-driver-jail-time-1.6620845
