Retired from IT, thank God! Into photography, writing, fountain pens and choral singing. Fighting and losing the eternal battle against typos. Ugly old married dude who is not looking to get laid. At the age where I get all the aches and pains, but none of the senior's discounts. I boost a lot. Avatar is a black and white photograph of an at best nondescript older guy. #Photography #Writing #BlackAndWhite #Toronto

Capitalism is when your tax dollars pay to bail out the bank that foreclosed on your mortgage

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@Daojoan Capitalism is when spending a few hundred a month of grossly inadequate social spending on someone poor who needs it is evil and will destroy the economy, while spending billions to subsidize corporations who continually offshore workers and replace them with AI is considered vital to keeping the economy going.

My goals for 2024;

  1. Buy less stuff, or at least:
  2. Buy local stuff
  3. Buy used stuff
  4. Trade stuff

And finally, tell large corporations making record profits to get stuffed.

When the Republicans finally get around to selecting a new speaker, maybe the winner should take the oath of office using a copy of The Lord of The Flies instead of the Bible. Seems to me a book about squabbling children would be most appropriate.

When I look at the mess in Ottawa and the Metrolinx Toronto debacle I am reminded of being involved in large multi-vendor IT projects before I retired; instead of brainstorming solutions, all the players would spend all their time and energy making sure they wouldn't take the blame, and would look for ways to score political points. Nothing ever changes.

Yesterday on Facebook I was grousing about how people deliberately misrepresent the concept of the 15 minute neighboorhood, and a FB friend claimed the 15 minute neighbourhood would mean no access for ambulance and fire trucks. I wished it had just been some random yahoo. It's sad to see people you know taken in by such BS.

Oh the horror of living in the dystopian nightmare of the 15 minute city. I was subjected to a quiet peaceful walk in the morning sun this morning, enjoying a coffee on an outdoor patio…I’m still shaking. I’ll need hours of driving around the parking lot of an outlet mall in an F-150 just to decompress!

The problem with transportation in Canada: taking public transit is seen by most as much less sexy than driving a big black luxury SUV. A lot of people see transit users as losers, by definition. And I don't see this changing any time soon.

On one hand, I blame the food companies, but on the other hand it's up to us to stop buying this overpriced shit. There are alternatives for breakfast that cost less than a box of overprocessed chemicals. The food companies will ignore us and laugh at us as long as we give them our money. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/cereal-packaging-confusion-1.7076730?cmp=rss

If I were an American I'd be really worried about how the next few days will play out. I suspect Trump will get a last minute infusion of strings-attached miracle money to pay the hundreds of millions he owes for the bond. Trump is willing to sell your future, and the future of your children to the highest bidder, who will get an alarming amount of influence in exchange. In Trump's universe every American except him is expendable; only Trump matters. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/opinions/trump-bond-financial-problems-ghitis/index.html

If the US manages to avoid a Trumpian dictatorship in November (and I don't think the odds are good) will Americans pause for sober reflection on how close they came to losing ther democracy or in a fit of American Exceptionalism will they just pat themselves on the back and claim "only America" could have avoided this calamity?

Ohio Gov. VETOES ban on gender affirming care 🎊

Conservatives claim 'regret rate' for gender affirming surgery is high.

BUT IN REALITY...

According to a new article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association by three researchers from Johns Hopkins University

The researchers conducted a retrospective look at all available evidence and found that the “regret rate” for gender-affirming surgery is less than 1%.

The SCOTUS didn’t “get it wrong”; they delivered exactly what was paid for. They are basically an order fulfilment organization now. It won’t surprise me in the least if they provide Trump the immunity that he is demanding. I think the only people who will be surprised are those who think that the US still has the rule of law in effect.

Yesterday Pierre Poilievre said clearly that the explosion at the rainbow bridge was a terrorist act. Now that the FBI is saying it was not terrorism, will the media be calling him out on this? If Trudeau did this it would result in a multi-day pile-on but I can't help but feel that the media will give a pass. Again.
