Ok, who recognizes themselves as a "lung-gom-pa"? 😃 .
Let me start. I have been there for many years. Training was an easy way to sedate myself.
How about you?

Another terrible run, hot and with my heart rate out of control. I cut it off early in frustrated disgust. I am not myself & I can’t explain it.

My stress and sleep issues have mostly resolved and that two weeks without running shouldn’t have affected my fitness as much as it has.

And while I may not understand it, it’s clear to see. I went through the stages of grief on the walk back & am mostly landed on acceptance. Will now run slower & target zone 2, rebuilding my vanished base. #Running

Taper 1. T-5d. Rennsteiglauf in Germany. 74km with 1874m of EG and 1386m of EL. A “classic” in Germany. 51st edition. With up to 2500 participants (and 15000 in total over all events). Taking place in the “Thüringer Wald” Mittelgebirge (most known is Oberhof for its Biathlon events during the winter). Will be cool. Though it is kind of my A-goal race I am planning to do the race to be able to enjoy it as much as possible while also racing. It is a huge festival in the area. And I don’t want to miss out the party feeling at the aid stations. Zoom in at the screenshot. Amazing number and supply. Looking forward to the beer towards the end. https://www.rennsteiglauf.de/wettkampf/strecken/supermarathon/

✅🤸‍♂️🏋🏻 Home strength training

I am home alone with the kids and haven’t been in the gym this week. So I found a running support strength training program published 5 years ago by running YouTube celeb Ben Parkes. It has some good exercises I tried today at home - all body weight only.

  • reverse lunge with kicks
  • squats
  • one legged calf raises
  • glute bridge
  • plank
  • crunch

Core, quads, calfs, hamstrings, glutes🤗

Felt them despite body weight “only”.

Recovery day, no today!

All because I'll be running a 25km/800m elev. gain HM at the Alpine Festival on Sat. Last year I ran the same event and that wasn't so good because the weather was very hot and I started off too fast, and by the end the hammer was about to knock me down.

But this year it should be better, or quite the opposite, as snow is expected to get close to the max elev of the course.

Western States training camp day 2 was an adventure. Weather called for 20% chance of rain, it rained on me for 6 hours. The GPX course that I built was off and I had to bail a little earlier than planned. But I felt great and am finally feeling fit.

Johan_Barelds,
@Johan_Barelds@mastodon.nl avatar

@WTL @jaredbyrd I guess that depends how cold it is. In cycling we have the rule dumb saying: Rain is ok to go, cold is ok to go, but rain and cold are a no go.
I hope it was only rain and no cold for you Jared.

@jaredbyrd @WTL
Yeah. I think you are better off running than cycling in rain and cold. Speedy recovery for the wife 🚴😬

thefifthseason, to barefoot

Anatomically we are built to run on our forefoot not our heel. You can do this little experiment with yourself; Take off your shoes and sock and try to run a bit back and forth. Did you land on your heel even once? Nope. Your body will not allow you to do that, it forces you to run tippitoe instead. Sure, accidents or miscalculation do happen and when it do you will feel pain in the heel from the impact which causes you to be more attentive to avoid that happening again. But, if you try to run back and forth with your shoes, likely not once will you land on your forefoot. Completely flips the anatomy.

Its a noticeable difference running in "barefoot" shoes versus regular running shoes. Your muscles will cushion your foot strike instead of bone and you will feel more "springy" in your stride. Surprisingly your body will feel less taxed from barefoot running than when using running shoes and your muscles will feel fresher after a run.

What is important to know is that it will take your body a long time to adjust to running "barefooted" for some distance, carefully and gradually expose the feet and legs to barefoot running, and I mean only run 1km at first, then weeks later go for 1,5km and so on. Otherwise you'll likely end up with injuries or pulled tendon or muscle. Because we've wrongly adapted our body through a lifetime to walk and run anatomically incorrectly so it stand to reason that it will take some time to reprogram the body and relearn the muscles for a different movement pattern.

Ok, this is something about running I am wondering for a long time.

Assuming your fitness level is ok for running, let's say 4 hours (~35km) easy running. Besides running you maintain your fitness also by cross-training like cycling.

What is the minimum (average) amount of runs you should do weekly and what is the minimum weekly longest distance?

I guess what in essence I am trying to figure out is how much time on your feet (training the leg muscles and tendons) you need minimum.

Johan_Barelds,
@Johan_Barelds@mastodon.nl avatar

@Lee6 Lol. That's true. But the nerd in me isnt really satisfied with that answer 🤣. But I do realisme that it might be the only correct answer there is 🤷

A fun couple of days on the training plan - 1 hour aerobic endurance run yesterday and 44 minute tempo run late tonight at the gym!

10 weeks until the race when I'm aiming to complete 50 miles in 24 hours and raise a bunch of cash for the lovely peeps at .

Getting very real as Sunday's run is 4 hours long ... Haven't done that long in about 18 months!

11 weeks until and it's time for another fitness test (aka 44 minutes of pure evil!) to kick off the final phase ... Did better than I was expecting given I've had several weeks off so I could cope with all the travel without my body crashing and burning!

Now to get my head down and focus on pushing out the long runs so I'll be able to finish the planned 50 miles in 24 hours in June!

Hello trailrunners!
Is there a rule of tumb how much vertical meters one should train for a specific event?
I am looking for a way to make it measurable in my training metrics.
Thanks!

Johan_Barelds,
@Johan_Barelds@mastodon.nl avatar

@riaschissl @running Thanks Udo!
That is a good rule of tumb to.
But since the distance and ascend of my target events are fixed there is no practical use for it in my training.

I am with you on the differences in ascend like surface and angle.

My reasoning is that uphill training is beneficial for (and to combine) strength and high intensity training.

If you address them both the surface and angle becomes of less importance then training wise (not saying they wont make a difference 🙂 ).
