This is remarkably reminiscent of when I graduated in 2006 and, like thousands other physiotherapy and occupational therapy students, there were not enough junior rotations to go round, not by far.

Many, like me, went on to pivot into another career, but not after 4 years of trying to secure a junior rotation and tens of thousands spent on our training.

Such a waste, especially at a time when the health service desperately needs every member of staff possible.

A few pics from last weekend's 4.5 hour run, it was hard going and a sobering reminder that in 6 weeks I'll be doing 4x the distance .... Yikes!

Also, dates filled with peanut butter are my new favourite run snack!

Keeping on keeping on, active recovery week this week so much shorter runs. Still breaking in the new trainers which I'm just taking slowly.

@kieron yeah, a bit messy (I just chuck them in a plastic bag and shove in a pocket or in my pack) but they are super tasty and very easy to eat/digest!

Had a lovely afternoon picking up some plants to go in my little barrel pond - I created it at the end of last summer but only had oxygenating weeds in it before today.

It's a nice space to sit quietly with a cuppa, and the local wildlife enjoys it, too!

Ok, I'm looking at vests. Preferably with bottles. The ones I looked at seem unreasonably expensive. What is everyone rocking these days?

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@myfear I run with the Ultimate Direction Adventure vest, had it for probably 6 years. I like the pocket configuration and that I can add a water bladder for the longer runs. It's also very comfortable with the adjustments that's possible, too! I use Tailwind bottles as they're the best I've found, and an UD water bladder.

Also know a lot of folks who run with the Decathlon branded ones, and when I first started I used their bottles.

Taken the plunge, ordered my first pair of ... Tips for transitioning from Brooks Ghost to Altra Torin? I'll of course break them in and rotate with the old ones etc.

I'm much more a mid- to forefoot runner on the treadmill now and my feet are just struggling. I've tried new insoles, the shoes are wide fit and only have 180 miles on them so pretty sure it's not that they are already dead. So giving it a go with a different shoe to see if that makes a difference.

@sbfclt ah that's good to know, thanks!

Several years back I tried to switch over to Hoka Clifton 5s but my calves really didn't cope at all. I was very much a heel striker back then though, so I'm hopeful that with the changes in running form it will be an easier journey this time!

Was there anything you found helpful when you made the switch?

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@fo thanks for the advice, yes I'm planning to break them in gradually, maybe only on my active recovery weeks where the runs are shorter. I guess it will also need some work on the calves, that's what took a battering last time I tried to reduce drop significantly.

10 mile run today, was hoping for another hour but at the end of the second 5 mile loop the body was giving very clear 'that's enough for today' signals. 4 hours on the schedule, 3 hours done.

The neverending tightrope we walk between living with a long term condition like and training for endurance events!

Delightful to see the bluebells poking their heads up out of the forest floor, and a shame to see the demise of another shoreline tree due to erosion.

The problem with composing a song mainly with sheet music is that you have to actually learn to play the bugger afterwards…

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@danfairs literally just had this issue last week, composed something for flute and then thought I'd try to play it ..... Laughed out loud at all the times I'd cursed the composer in the past for doing the very same thing! 😬

A fun couple of days on the #Endure24 training plan - 1 hour aerobic endurance run yesterday and 44 minute tempo run late tonight at the gym!

10 weeks until the race when I'm aiming to complete 50 miles in 24 hours and raise a bunch of cash for the lovely peeps at #Breathworks.

Getting very real as Sunday's run is 4 hours long ... Haven't done that long in about 18 months!

Hands-down one of my favorite things about is the incredible, odd, wacky, and unusual backgrounds that people have before they entered the world. (Or, unusual in the sense that the backgrounds are very much non-tech.)

Baristas, toy store managers, flight attendants, and so much more that I have seen.

This makes the fabric of our movement more intersectional, and I don't know if we celebrate that aspect of FOSS enough.

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@jwf well my background was from being a Sport Scientist and Physiotherapist so yeah, some very weird and whacky backgrounds indeed!

Is there a solution for socks getting holes immediately when running? Or does everyone just learn to darn and constantly fix them?

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@erikavaris highly recommend reading the book Fixing your Feet, taught me so much about taking care of your feet and understanding how and why problems arise... If you're getting holes in socks, you've got friction happening somewhere that it shouldn't be, which will cause more problems down the line. Wider or larger shoes needed, maybe?

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@erikavaris yeah could well be. Also if the top of the toe box is too shallow and toes bump the top. I can't wear speedgoats for that reason.

I also find keeping my toenails clipped as short as possible, and wearing a gel toe cap on the worst ones helps. On the really long races I wrap them in KT tape instead, as the toe caps eventually start to move around a bit as your feet get sweaty.

I find it interesting that some people think loneliness is a personal condition rather than a societal one. I never saw that argument generally made, but maybe people blame themselves for their own sense of loneliness?

"So much of contemporary discussion about the impact of social and technological changes on people’s psychology – from the influence of social media on the wellbeing of the young to the effect of hyper-individualism on our sense of self – fetishises the psychology at the expense of social analysis. We look for loneliness inside our heads when its source lies all around us, in the destruction of collective life, the erosion of communal bonds, the ruin of civil society, the squeezing of public spaces. We could do with obsessing less about personality types than about the obsession with the psychological at the expense of the social."

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@Furthering there were some interesting discussions on the High Performance podcast recently about this and how instead of looking at the societal issues we put the onus (and expectation to fix) onto individuals.

Nice to be able to get back to learning composition after a while travelling!

After several pieces working on composing for string orchestra I'm now into the giddy heights of wind quartet composition and modulating between keys ... Wish me luck! 🫣

6 months after surgery for my badly broken radius and ulnar, I'm back under the bar managing loaded barbell squats and couldn't be happier!

We tried to get back to squats about 2 months ago with the Smith Machine for safety, but I didn't have enough wrist extension to maintain proper form at that time.

It takes a lot of work to come back from such a severe fracture but little by little things are improving! 🚀🚀🚀

Focusing mostly on strengthening for running at the moment.

How do you feel about recorded demos of software?

I need to give a demo of some software this week. Typically, I like to give a demo well... live.

This software runs, in the best case scenario, in something like 8 minutes but it can take much longer (non-deterministically). It's fast for what it's doing but still slow clock-wise and very dull to watch.

I'm considering recording it ahead of time, but I know people in this industry are skeptical by nature and pre-recording looks fishy.

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@linux_mclinuxface I quite like how @acquia do it - they give you the option for a live demo with a live human, a recorded demo with a live human, and a clickable product walkthrough: https://www.acquia.com/request-a-demo

I am watching a talk by @rcheesley from @FOSSBackstage and just learned about the concept of Friend DA (a friendlier version of a NDA). This is already a great start of the morning! https://friendda.org/

rcheesley,
@rcheesley@mastodon.online avatar

@ainali @FOSSBackstage yes, we use it in several professional communities that I'm a part of, basic principle is sharing of information doesn't leave the community and is strictly confidential between the people involved.

It's more of a cultural expectation which builds trust, and it's strongly enforced (if you break it, you're removed from the community).

The term has somewhat become shorthand for sharing confidentially with a friend and trusting them to keep your confidence.

11 weeks until and it's time for another fitness test (aka 44 minutes of pure evil!) to kick off the final phase ... Did better than I was expecting given I've had several weeks off so I could cope with all the travel without my body crashing and burning!

Now to get my head down and focus on pushing out the long runs so I'll be able to finish the planned 50 miles in 24 hours in June!

Currently recruiting a crew, sponsors can support at https://www.breathworks-mindfulness.org.uk/ruth-endure24
