🇬🇧The political repression against protestors in London yesterday is interesting because it shows us that currently:
🚷normality must be enforced by violence.🚷

A strong confident society doesn't need to lock people up when they say they don't agree with some public event; it just ignores them.

Silence is the most utterly destructive way to handle opposition.

So what I'm left with is an impression of:
🚓the vicious fragility of British public life.🚓

It looks like Finland's right/far-right government is safe, since the latest opinion poll suggests there's been zero backlash against the centrist parties, even though their far-right ally has been exposed as proudly racist and linked to fascist sympathies in the last few weeks.

Am I more tired these days, or am I just unmasking and being more honest about how tired things make me? Because - in a related development - I'm not getting those explosive burnout depressions any more.

Swedish Mastodon! What is this thing I found in the recycling room?

Two wooden boxes with metal frames. One twice as large. Stockholm crest and KN on front.

Half a million displaced by floods in Brasil. Half. A. Million.

We're going to keep seeing these numbers and we're going to get numb to seeing them, and it'll be the new normal. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/persistent-brazil-floods-raise-specter-climate-migration-2024-05-13/?taid=6642658ec92493000158bfd7&utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&utm_medium=trueAnthem&utm_source=twitter

You can tell what class a British person is by which Michael Gambon role they are pretending to remember him for.

Middle class: The Singing Detective.
Upper class: Falstaff in Shakespeare's Henry V.

Do you think studios affected by will be looking to Europe to find actors, writers and content to fill the gap?

Is there some way we can prevent Europeans crossing the picket line on this?

When I was studying I learned about the theory of semantic memory - how people will remember the meaning of something better than raw facts.

This is certainly true for me. I can remember long strings of numbers if I have time to give them a context. And this must be what mnemonics and memory palaces do: give data a semantic structure and context to help us remember it.

I have three twitter lists I keep for checking up on people who aren't leaving. One on Ukraine, one on UK politics, one on EU politics.

Increasingly I'm seeing people in those lists starting to share BlueSky invite codes, even setting up mechanisms like Google documents to share the codes.

So I think even these groups that stayed on twitter a long time are trying to leave, and as BlueSky grows my existing twitter lists will probably becoming quieter and eventually empty.

🌱The main message from the latest @Eceni podcast with Max Ajl was that the best thing you can do to create a better world is to join an organization - don't face the future alone.

❓Tell me what organisations you're in, and any other details about your experience with it that you want.

🌍 Please boost, so people thinking about getting organised can learn from the experiences shared here.

Imagine it's the 14th century and a tax collector is about to assign you a surname based on your profession, how you look, or some other characteristic.

What are they going to call you?

A couple of years ago I was asked to write a chapter about climate change for a book by a major publisher. I see the book is out now.

I wrote the chapter, for no pay, and then over the following months was confused as my chapter was well received, then forgotten, then sidelined and then totally forgotten.

It was only much later that I realised I and the editors were operating under different assumptions. I thought I was co-working with them, while they thought I was grateful to get exposure.

Swedish is like Linux. It's quite obvious how the language works, and you can make your own words if you care to.

French is Apple. Try to make your own modifications and they will SEND YOU TO JAIL.

English is your grandparents' PC. We have no idea how it works. Where did all these weird plug-in words come from????

I'm challenging myself to summarise climate science articles and papers in a very short format - around the length of a Mastodon post.

Link me your research if you want me to demonstrate.

My aim is a summary that speaks to journalists and the general public.

I'm going to start a new playthrough of Baldur's Gate 1, and Tales of the Sword Coast, and Baldur's Gate 2, AND Throne of Bhaal. And by the time I've done 100% of that I might have saved up enough for a computer that can run Baldur's Gate 3.

If you see a long German or Swedish word, first of all, don't panic. It's more scared of you than you are of it. Secondly, take a closer look and you'll see it's actually just three normal words in a trenchcoat, huddling together to deter predators (French and English).
