How much is too much, and what can you do about it?

We’ll be discussing toxic stress with an expert in the field, Dr. Lawson Wulsin, at a free online webinar on Thursday, hosted by our health editor.

Dr. Wulsin has written about his work for us, too, in addition to his recent book:

Studies like this are an indictment against Republican policies to purposefully under-fund pre-k and schools in districts where the majority of residents are people of color, ethnic or religious minorities, or poor.

From the article:
Metacognitive abilities may be more influenced by environment than genetics by Eric W. Dolan, May 3, 2024 in Cognitive Science

"...Metacognition refers to the awareness and management of one’s own cognitive processes, such as learning and problem-solving, while mentalizing involves understanding and interpreting the mental states of oneself and others, crucial for effective social interaction.

...Contrary to the traditionally high heritability observed in general cognitive abilities like intelligence, the researchers found that metacognition and mentalizing are more strongly influenced by environmental factors than by genetic ones..."

I sometimes wonder if I should simply have a note called "My identity and life plan" on my phone that I can check when I lose sight of my goals. I don't quite remember who I am or what I do today...

So much of what I need to change about my life to get it on the right path lacks external cues. It's all in my head and is easily forgotten in the moment. It's an #ADHD thing.

If I don't embody who I want to be and my environment doesn't either, it's hard to stay on task. My day-to-day existence is just that I wake up in this room and nothing is happening here. Quite easily, this turns into me just wasting a whole day, since no one and nothing is calling me to action.

Having a kind of coach or manager to remind me of my own goals and push me in that direction would be extremely helpful. The little guy in my head that's supposed to do that is often absent...

Why do you think that aggression is so tightly associated with frustration? This does not seem like an adaptive response, despite being widely cross-cultural.

A very interesting paper by Megan Stevenson which I am still reading. But it really piqued my interest since I have definitely harbored what she called an "engineer's view" that we can do sociological randomized control trials with people to test public policy.

I have a feeling this is going to trigger a lot of introspection on my thoughts about this until now...

Austrian Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud was born in 1856.

He is considered the father of psychoanalysis. Freud's main contributions lie in his theories of the unconscious mind, the mechanisms of repression, and the role of sexuality in human psychology, which he discussed in major works like The Interpretation of Dreams, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, and Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality.

The number of people on the internet who think using shame will cause people to change or even listen shows the gut belief about the human mid works. Shame only EVER works if paired with respect. You must care about the opinion of a person before shame has any impact at all. Shaming people online especially is dumb with your own assumption that they respect you. Shame is a method of showing a lack of respect and poor opinion. Shame is respect denial but only actually after giving respect. You are being essentially an emotional drug dealer. They need their fix, but you HAVE to get them hooked first. If you haven't do that, people react terribly because literally all you are doing is disrespecting someone, straight off the bat and unless you are really charismatic, your chances of having the impact you want is near zero.

There’s an important gap between “hope” and “optimism.”

Hope is not just about looking on the bright side. It plays the long game: enduring suffering with integrity.

It’s something Martin Luther King understood when he said “I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.” But hope makes us act, anyway.

Brain (nervous system) dysfunction can be demarcated, for the sake of clarity, between genetically or cognitively caused

E.g., the behaviour that is diagnosed as , can be a or cognitively caused phenomena. Although, medically, only the former should be diagnosed as schizophrenia

As for the latter, mistaken beliefs such as hearing "god" in the mind (dualism) can cause behaviours that mirror schizophrenia, but, can be mitigated with education

Took a research survey looking into effectiveness of Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy ( ) training.

I am looking forward to the training.

I'm peeved about the survey. They can't list every religion in the world, but with Neo-Pagan religions being the fastest growing cluster of religions in the USA, do better than sticking us in "OTHER"! Limits the research effectiveness & hides us.

Song lyrics have become simpler, more negative, and more self-focused over time by Eric W. Dolan May 1, 2024

"...Previous research has highlighted how musical lyrics can influence emotions, foster social connections, and even shape cultural identities. [S]tudies have shown that lyrics can act as a barometer for societal mood, reflecting changes in attitudes, values, and social norms. For instance, an increase in negative emotional content in lyrics might mirror rising societal tensions or cultural shifts towards more introspective or confrontational themes.

Furthermore, music serves various psychological & social functions, from regulating emotions to facilitating communication among groups. This makes the study of lyrical content particularly relevant for psychologists, sociologists, and cultural historians interested in the interplay between art & human behavior..."

#WordWeavers 2404.29 — Who's feeling shame in your story? Is it justified?

/It's'a [#brainfog #fibromyalgia day, but I'm gonna write this to get something out. Hoping it's coherent. —RS/]

This question made me think hard for quite awhile until I—like an artist or a photographer deciphering how shadow defines volume and dimension—saw /negative space/ in a story... where something wasn't. Emptiness.

Wintereyes /doesn't/ feel #shame, and I'm realizing this is an #emotion with which I can make a #feminist point in my story. Whilst shame is IMHO used more often to control women than it is men, it is both incidious and /learned./ Shame is a combination of built-in emotions programmed into a person to make a person self-punish for "wrong" behavior even if it's secret; it's related to, but not the same as guilt.

Wintereyes was raised by wolves, but not until she was 7 when her "gift" caused her to seek a second set of parents. Her early childhood will require investigation in another story, but I'm pretty sure her human parents didn't teach her the emotion; it's not that she forgot. Forced to live again amongst humans over a decade later, to become more human, people's behavior baffles her. Late in the story, when she's asked to disrobe by stylist at a modeling shoot, and does without a thought, the stylist observes, "You don't feel shame, do you?" This is where Wintereyes will go off like a firecracker, and it should be very interesting.

The stylist may actually feel ashamed...

Author Michael Harris says that life in 2024 is too much — a deluge of stimulus. He examines why that's the case in this essay for Montecristo, and heads to a Tokyo listening bar in an effort to still the noise and rediscover the practice of sustained attention. "Needle touches vinyl, and a grief-stricken Nina Simone sings, 'Ne me quitte pas'," he writes. "To hear that beacon of a voice and to be moved, and yet to refrain from any critique or review, is our goal. For once to hold back our vulgar additions."

I learned about ethogenics today.

Wikipedia:

Ethogenics ("the study of behavior as generated by persons who exhibit a character, an ethos") is an interdisciplinary social scientific approach that attempts to understand the systems of belief or means through which individuals attach significance to their actions and form their identities by linking these to the larger structure of rules (norms) and cultural resources in society.
