The conclusion I draw from the decision of Farage to stand is he recognises the Tories are going to be utterly destroyed and he wants to be around to benefit after the election.

Ipsos pollster Kieran Pedley says

"2 highly significant consequences of Farage return: 1) Problem for Cons is even if Reform vote doesn’t grow it’s much harder to squeeze. Status quo v. bad for Cons. 2) Wider consequence for election is if the role immigration plays grows & what does that mean for all parties."

There's that old joke about the gambler at the races, muttering "please god, let me break even. I really need the money." In the same way I'm saying, "please RNGsus, let this be a MAU Plateau, I really want to stay here."

When I see Microsoft investing billions in "cloud infrastructure and AI" in Sweden my only question is: what shall we use the empty buildings for when the market for AI crashes? https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/microsoft-miljardsatsar-pa-ai-i-sverige

Are we on the verge of a(nother) financial crisis?

@AnnPettifor thinks we are, and here she offers some evidence for that suspicion.

And as she, therefore concludes:

'Given recent history, it might be wise to tighten your financial seatbelts'!

Its could be a bumpy ride.....

@ChrisMayLA6 @AnnPettifor this would totally wipe out most 'AI' applications. And, apparently, Liverpool football club.

While in the current political discussion climate this theme is easy to forget, the current @EUCommission has been pursuing a very privacy-hostile policy for digital communications, which the current EU Parliament has opposed. As you pick your candidate for elections, pay attention to their track record on digital, consumer, privacy questions. This matter is not settled yet, nor will it be the last such matter.

@osma @EUCommission the far-right has often been against chat control, but I'm assuming this will change the day they go into coalition and become the ones who are doing the surveillance

"In 1635, mining was introduced in Sápmi when a silver mine opened near Árjepluovve in Sweden. The impact on Sámi society was huge. Businessmen and settlers arrived from the south, while local Sámi were driven from their homes and used as coolies. Resistance was met with harsh repression. A special kind of water torture became notorious. Sámi were dragged along a rope underneath the ice of a frozen lake from one hole to another."

@gerrymcgovern and this is because the rich areas of Sweden make sure no wind farms are built there. Not even offshore. So of course it gets dumped on the most politically vulnerable people.

From the news you might not know that Hamas committed to a tacit recognition of Israel as long ago as 2006.

I'm not saying Hamas is good, I think it can be accurately described as a fascist movement. Just that the idea of it as an irrational organisation hellbent on maximalist goals is not accurate, and probably based in orientalism. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_Prisoners'

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@itsmeholland yes, campaigns against terrorism are often trying to solve a political problem using pure repression.

Loukas, to random
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

🧵I basically agree with all of this. The question we then urgently need to answer is how does this kind of left reproduce itself? If all you are is a protest movement you can survive on donations of time and money. But to build load-bearing collapse infrastructure demands far more resources. https://climatejustice.social/@muellertadzio/112540033144186576

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@xarvh but in that idea of success, competing as a business or as a media publisher, it still doesn't make an anarchist movement. Businesses and media can be part of a constellation of anarchist organisation, but it's not how a movement could reproduce itself. The only time anarchism has ever been a mass movement has been when it was connected to forms of reproduction like the ones I've mentioned: syndicalism and liberation.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@xarvh for a business to survive it always has to compete with other businesses.

Syndicalism and liberation are not being used largely because the post-war social democratic compromise created welfare states and institutionalised the role of unions. These post-war elements are being stripped away and will probably collapse, making other methods necessary, but there's always a tendency to try to turn the clock back.

Regarding emissions I'm sure Tadzio is aware that every reduction matters.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@xarvh

the other methods I'm talking about include my proposals for syndicalism and liberation, but I'm saying it in an open way because I've certainly not thought of everything:)

I think those two paths will happen in ways that are both new and familiar. For example gay and women's liberation movements arose during times of massive industrial expansion and economic growth. Liberation for times of scarcity and collapse will be different, while at the sale time being similar.

A majority of white Americans are going to vote for Trump, and if Biden loses the election the main Democrat talking point is going to be "why would POC do this to us?"

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

If Biden fails to beat a convicted criminal fascist the Democrat leadership should do a lot of soul-searching. But they'll probably just do finger-pointing.

New research from UCL & the International Institute for Sustainable Development suggests that there are now enough sustainable/green energy projects running or in development that no new fossil fuel capacity is required.

As current fossil fuel capacity now degrades/reduces, so green energy capacity can take its place.

This is not how the fossil fuel firms see it, but as emissions keep rising (up 1.1% last year) this must become a crucial pivot point!

#emissions #FossilFuels #green

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@ChrisMayLA6

I'm just hoping at some time soon the lack of expansion in fossil fuels will create a de facto future end date; that will then rush back down the timeline to abolish fossil fuels in the here and now.

Investments depend on the illusion of endless growth and expansion so I hope that awareness of the very finite nature of the fossil industry will act as a kind of sub-prime shock that pulls out the rug.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 it's the only way I can see a rapid end to fossil fuels. Because governments and businesses aren't going to willingly give the fuels up while the extraction and consumption offers value.
