The Welrod was a British bolt action, magazine fed, suppressed pistol devised at the Inter-Services Research Bureau (later Station IX). Welrod is a portmanteau combining “Wel” from Welwyn Garden City (located near Station IX) and “rod," gangland slang for a gun, as a way to obscure its purpose. (1/4)

Dorothy Thompson, the American journalist who warned the world about Adolf Hitler:

She "mounted a one-woman crusade against the Nazis. She denounced the German government frequently and vigorously in her syndicated column, "On the Record," which ran in 170 newspapers and reached roughly 8 million readers. She also spread her message through regular radio broadcasts for NBC, and a monthly column in Ladies' Home Journal." (1/2)

CBC Radio host Nahlah Ayed has written a book on the love story of Special Operations Executive agents Sonya (née Butt) and Guy d'Artois. The two agents fell in love during SOE training. The book, The War We Won Apart, will be available 28 May.

Mar 24, 1944: On this date, the poem The Life That I Have was issued by Special Operations Executive cryptographer Leo Marks to agent Violette Szabo. The poem was made famous by its inclusion in the 1958 movie about Szabo, Carve Her Name with Pride. (1/2)

Violette Szabό was executed at Ravensbrück at the age of 23, on or before 5 February 1945. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross, the highest award bestowed by the British government for non-operational gallantry or gallantry not in the presence of an enemy. She is one of only twelve George Crosses to be awarded to a woman. (2/2)

Mar 24, On this date in 1944, the real ‘Great Escape’ occurred when British Commonwealth POWs escaped from the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III. It was immortalized in the HIGHLY fictionalized 1963 film ‘The Great Escape’ (including among other inaccuracies, the role of Americans in the actual escape.) In the movie, Steve McQueen's character was based on Jerry Sage of the Office of Strategic Services.

Jannetje Johanna Schaft was born in 1920 in Haarlem, Netherlands. She became a Dutch Resistance fighter who went by the nom de guerre “Hannie.”

In 1938 she enrolled at the University of Amsterdam to pursue law with a goal of becoming a human rights lawyer. She became friends with fellow students Sonja Frenk & Philine Polak, who were Jews, & became increasingly concerned about the rise in antisemitism. (1/5)

After the German occupation of the Netherlands, Schaft became active opposing the Nazis and protecting Dutch Jews. She stole identity papers to provide to Jews so that they could avoid deportation. These actions brought her to the attention of the Council of the Resistance, who recruited her at age 20. She was asked to be a courier but Schaft refused - she wanted to kill Nazis. (2/5)

Shaft engaged in sabotage (including blowing up a power station), transported weapons, & conducted assassinations. She, along with sisters Truus & Freddie Oversteegen, became a 3 woman assassination team. Schaft killed German soldiers, Dutch Nazis, collaborators & traitors. She became fluent in German, allowing her to tempt German soldiers as a honeypot. She was wanted by the Nazis, but known only as ‘the girl with red hair’. (3/5)

Schaft was arrested at a Nazi checkpoint on March 25, 1945. Though she had dyed her hair to conceal her identity as the girl with red hair, her red roots gave away her identity. She was executed 3 weeks prior to the end of the war, on April 17, 1945. She was 24 years old. (4/5)

She is one of the most recognized women of the antifascist resistance during WW2. A film, Het Meisje met het Rode Haar, directed by Ben Verbong was released in 1981 and a musical with the same name premiered Oct 2015. The National Hannie Schaft Foundation Visitor Center is located in Haarlem. (5/5)

Mar 10: On this date in 1913, Harriet Tubman died at the age of 90 or 91. She orchestrated the rescue of enslaved people using a network of antislavery activists known as the Underground Railroad, served as a spy and military advisor to Union troops during the Civil War, and was an activist for social justice in the post-war period.

Feb 15, 1925: On this date, Charlotte Sorkine (Noshpitz) was born in Paris. She joined the French Resistance at age 17. She conveyed groups of Jewish children to the Swiss Border to be rescued, created thousands of false papers, & accompanied young people over the Pyrenees Mountain to join the Allied armies in Spain. Jan 29, 1919: On this date, Marina Ginestà was born in Toulouse. At age 17, she was photographed in an iconic image from the Spanish Civil War standing on the roof of a hotel in Barcelona. “Dressed in military uniform with the wind in her hair, & armed with a rifle (the first & only time in her life, she later stated), Marina was witness to a historic moment, & instantly became a symbol of the hopefulness of revolution.”

Jan 16, 1903: On this date, William Grover-Williams was born. He was a British Grand Prix motor car driver who served in France with the Special Operations Executive. He organized the CHESTNUT circuit near Paris, which would replace the collapsing AUTOGYRO circuit, but with the success of the extensive PROSPER circuit, CHESTNUT became a sleeper cell. Grover-Williams was arrested Aug 1, 1943. He was executed at Sachsenhausen in the Spring of 1945.

Noor Inayat Khan was born on January 1, 1914 in Moscow to an Indian father and an American mother. She served in the Special Operations Executive using the pseudonym Nora Baker and code-name Madeleine. She was the first British female wireless operator sent to occupied France to assist the French Resistance. She is Britain’s first Muslim war heroine. (1/9)
