Archaeologist / Graphic Designer / High Functioning Potato / Scavenger / Cheapskate Gardener / Loved by dogs / Tolerated by cats

I live in the Dystopian Disunited Kingdom. I'm here to be informed of corruption, nebulous networks and shady government plans.

Really, I'm just a high-functioning potato, so cut me some slack 😏

Just listened to @rahmstorf’s enormously helpful &clear Alfred Wegener Medal lecture:

“Is the Reaching a Tipping Point?”

Answer: it looks more and more likely. There are still uncertainties, especially as to “When”; but with ever increasing evidence it is clear, as Rahmstorf says: we must, must apply the .

The woodland bank looking particularly verdant. Its been there for over three years now, so is quite mature for a little patch of guerrilla gardening. Its very low maintenance, just remove the fallen oak leaves in spring, and weed out any aggressive plants (I'm looking at you wild strawberries) in summer.

Close up of the greenery along the bank, showing the different variety of plants.

(I know no-one reads the sub-toot but...)
I'm strangely proud of this spare bit of land. It was a forest of weeds in 2020. I never meant to do anything with it other than cut a path to behind the garage, but my natural tendencies took over...
My life had just started again after a time when I was convinced it was over. My situation had forced me to learn how to listen, to observe, to try and understand, and somehow, landscaping and planting this wasteland seemed to move in concert with that.

Free eggs from the uncared for chickens on the allotment. They have started to sleep in my compost because its warm and dry, and I'm currently getting an egg each morning.
Meanwhile Stigg (the owner) is hunting all over the field for eggs and not finding any.
He says the birds don't go in anyone else's area so he can't really ask for the eggs. Anyway, he isn't talking to me so...
He really should take better care of his livestock.
They are my chickens now.

Finally a warm and sunny day on the allotment. A bit of planting and Comfrey Corner is starting to flourish.
The pond just isn't clearing due to silting from all the rain. I need the vegetation to grow a bit around it to absorb some of the run-off.
I found a skip full of compost and old decking, exactly what I needed to finish the beds!
Also scored some railway sleepers I might use to make extra mini terraces down slope.

Looking down the allotment onto the terrace, the beds are filled with soil and compost. Above the terrace in the foreground is a garden area, just starting to green up, and below the terrace you can see the bottom of the area, woodchipped and used for storage.
A shady corner of the allotment where the comfrey and borage is growing strong.

Freeports seem to be going under the radar in the UK media...

Freeports are intended to be special unregulated investment zones where the normal rules do not apply. The zones cover some large areas.

The idea is based on the old concept of charter cities, another way for big business to profiteer & money launder, potentially forcing workers into indentured labour without rights or regulation. 1/4

Lottie came to visit the allotment for Caturday! She was in hunting mode, so ignored me at first, but finally came over to say hi, before heading out to carry on the hunt.

An overhead shot of the downslope allotment from a raised perspective. I stood on the neighbours fence! Well, I've been digging over his area for him and getting access via the fence, so I took the opportunity.

The mother hen on the allotment field now has only three babies. I'm sure there were around 9 or 10 a couple of weeks ago.
Stigg lets the birds roam free, he let the cockerel breed, he doesn't care if the birds or chicks live or die, he only got them to piss the council off. A dog killed a hen a few days ago, he laughed. He feeds them stale white bread and they have no shelter.
The council have told him to get rid of them, especially the cockerel but he won't.

I for one am glad she's back...because that quote below is my life for the last five years; the world in microcosm:

"You admit you're scared. You admit you don't know what to do. You stop. You listen. You look for answers. You come up with a plan. You abandon your previous assumptions about reality. You adjust to the new reality in front of you."

From Aljazeera's live blog:

So not a ceasefire. But I can't see what military operations they can carry out without breaching the other stipulations of the Court.

Not taken a pic of Hendrix for a while, though I saw him the other day, so here is a slightly older pic.
He's funny, he doesn't like hoomans talking to each other, he gets the hump, sods off, comes back to see if they have stopped than sods off again if they haven't!
Bless him, he's my little pal and its always a joy to bump into him.
This spot is where we go so he can rollypolly for me at face level.

I'm pretty sure this is more or less the case, with petty border skirmishes between individuals, but the overall conflict kind of stage managed. I mean, PMQs is an embarrassing farce of petulant childish behaviour for a start.

To us, the best mulch that you can use for the garden beds does not come from the garden center.

It is whatever biomass you have next to you that can be used and that is free.

This year I have used leaves from our trees in the garden beds and chopped weeds into the aisles.

Yes, it is labor-intensive to do that but I know that every year I have this resource available for free. So instead of sending this yard waste to the landfill and creating greenhouse gasses, it is best to find ways to use it in the garden.

What mulch do you like to use for your garden?

MostlyTato,
@MostlyTato@mstdn.social avatar

@compost
I compost all my garden and allotment waste in what I call my weed composter.
I keep all the autumn leaves from the streets in a upended dog crate.
I add all my kitchen waste with rotted manure and hard wood ash to my 3 stage composter, to which I also mix in leaf mulch and rotted green waste from the weed composter to get the green/brown balance.
But for winter mulch in the yard I use spruce leaves or leaf mould from the dog cage, which adds a nice crumbly layer.
