Bleh, Git 2.45 broke fresh clones of repos using git-lfs because they disallow post-checkout hooks by default, this broke my overnight game builds. https://github.com/git-lfs/git-lfs/issues/5749

Should be fixed in Git 2.45.2 apparently, but the temporary workaround is to define the env var GIT_CLONE_PROTECTION_ACTIVE=false during clone

@sinbad @bitinn how would a LFS newb know that they got it right first time?

Asking for a friend.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad @bitinn Cool thanks, never used LFS before but I'll try it on a simple project first to get a feel for it.

castano, to random
@castano@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Is there a way not to burn quithub's LFS quota on github actions?
I have a repo with GBs of LFS data, and it looks like the checkout action downloads the entire thing every time it's triggered.
This is not only is extremely wasteful, but also gets expensive very quickly!

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@wolfpld @castano I keep on debating going down a self-hosted route, but whilst its fairly easy its still work and maintenance.

I also thought about buying a NAS for home storage (with backups off site of course) but the cost becomes eye watering...

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@castano @wolfpld I think subversion is the probably the only source control I haven't used - it looks antiquated but I assume it still gets the job done?

If you're using Visual Studio 17.10 you can go to Tools > Options and then search for Copilot to turn off all the stupid LLM bullshit.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dougbinks You can also disable 'GitHub CoPilot' in the installer, which is enabled by default.

aras, to Playdate
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Because no one stopped me, I ported "Everybody Wants to Crank the World" #playdate demo to PC (Windows/Mac). https://github.com/aras-p/demo-pd-cranktheworld/pull/1 :playdate: :demoscene:

Using Sokol libraries by @floooh to do most of heavy lifting.

Fun fact: while the demo is running, it takes up as much CPU time as the windows task manager on my PC.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aras @floooh wonderful... but curse you guys it makes me want to buy a #playdate

which mario kart is your favorite and why is it super mario kart for the snes?

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko SMK is indeed the best Mario kart racer. It’s the only one that replicates the feeling of neck to neck racing, where the course and the other racers are real dangers. After SMK, the courses got wider and wider… and wider… and racers further and further apart.

To this day I still don’t understand how modern OSs need gigabytes of install space, but AmigaOS (mostly) fitted on a single floppy disk.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@raptor85 yup, plus modern os’s will have a few more programs than the bare bones amigaos, basic productivity, web browser, etc. Plus as you say, memory protection, virtualisation, and many other nice things.

But still, the modernOS is, er, 10k times bigger than amigaos?

He says not checking his maths :)

Amiga nerds! I just discovered the existence of the 520 RF adapter that you needed for colour output to a TV. Is... is this right? Did the A500 just never have colour TV output without that hideous dongle?

I never actually owned an Amiga but I developed on one at work (of course used a monitor and had all sorts of other development dongles on it). I also had loads of friends who owned them. Did I just never notice this giant beige prolapse hanging out the back of their machines?

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@pervognsen @TomF I don’t recall the RF adaptor ever being optional in the UK, although I think the 500 had been out a year before I got mine. Maybe it wasn’t day one. I never used mine though, since I bought a Philips 8833 RGB monitor as well.

AngryAnt, to keyboard

A couple of weeks ago I finally decided to stop postponing and just start the workday switching my to .

It really is very nice and the choice of making it an easier conversion from than Dvorak was certainly appreciated.

Aside from needing to focus a bit when I type old remembered passwords, I am basically back to pre-switch speeds with only occasional typos.

Reduced finger travel is very noticeable and using Qwerty boards is fine after a minute or two of "hang on..."

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@slembcke @AngryAnt I thought about trying alternate layouts many times - the main thing that always stopped me was the concern that there would always be one or more qwerty keyboards I’d regularly need to interact with and my brain would get confused.. they should ship laptops with Dvorak layouts.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@slembcke @AngryAnt :) my typing is getting worse as I get older anyway, losing dexterity in my fingers I think. I’m currently musing about whether to get an ergo keyboard.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt @slembcke thanks for the confirmation, I will give it a look.

As mentioned I was also thinking about ergo, not necessarily non/qwerty, esp the small keyboards with only about 3 rows. The main advantage I see for me would be (a) also minimising finger movement and (b) I don’t use that many keys anyway.

However I am unsure, and know of no way to easily test apart from buying one.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt @slembcke maybe people who write documents? As a programmer, my brain isn’t fast enough to keep up with my (average) typing speed.. esp with all the non alphabetical characters.

MouseByTheSea,
@MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt @jjacobsson @daniel_collin I’ve seen good reports on the glove80, but it’s (a) expense and (b) seems quite large to me but I might be wrong.

Right, windows has annoyed me for the last time, so it’s time to move my personal dev over to Linux. If I ever need to target windows in the future I’ll put it onto some other device and treat it like a console.

But where to go… my needs are light:

  • secure boot
  • c/c++/rust dev taken as granted
  • don’t need fractional scaling
  • don’t need lots of desktop apps
  • nice desktop rendering, esp fonts
  • prob not rolling…

Fed37 was okay, I found 38 a bit buggy.

Opinions welcome.

Them: it's important to us that the user is never blocked, so we've made everything async to ensure the main thread is never blocked and the UI remains responsive and fully interactive.

    @Fizzychicken I am not a fan of mid-gen refreshes beyond form factor tweaks (cost reduction would have been nice for new buyers).

    I prefer the old days when we eeked out what we could from a single spec until the next generation arrived.

    Though I haven’t looked in detail at what Sony did to the ps5 since I already have one.

    I don’t have a recent Xbox, but
    I have zero plans to ever buy one.

    Wrestled a barely-put-together, hardly-documented python setup for ages.

    Finally locked the initial works-for-now-on-this-specific-install stab in a proper works-for-real-anywhere-installed Nix configuration + patches for sanity (hey, how about actual entry points and less proof-of-concept runners - just for kicks?).

    I like Python the language. I am not a fan of its tooling and environment.

    Very nice open & helpful community thankfully :)

    MouseByTheSea,
    @MouseByTheSea@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @AngryAnt :) from what I can tell it definitely makes for a great business setup, I’m not sure about a personal one though…. Though there is only one way to find out I suppose :)
