An article published in the journal "Nature" reports the results of a study of the exoplanet 55 Cancri e, formally called Janssen, which confirms the presence of an atmosphere that is considered secondary, which means that it derives from emissions coming from the planet itself. A team of researchers used observations conducted with the James Webb Space Telescope to detect traces of an atmosphere.

The SpaceX Dragon 2 spacecraft blasted off atop a Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in its CRS-29 (Cargo Resupply Service 29) mission, also referred to as SPX-29. After almost exactly 12 minutes it separated successfully from the rocket's last stage and went en route to the International Space Station.

An article being published in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" reports the observation of a Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient (LFBOT), a rare type of cosmic explosion of still uncertain nature which was cataloged as AT2023fhn.

An article published in "The Astrophysical Journal Letters" reports the discovery of the most distant cold molecular gas in the interstellar medium of the galaxy that hosts the quasar nicknamed Pōniuāʻena, one of the three most distant bright quasars known. A team of researchers used observations conducted with the NOEMA (Northern Extended Millimeter Array) radio telescope to obtain the detection of the gas, to be precise carbon monoxide.

The Progress MS-24 spacecraft blasted off atop a Soyuz-2.1a rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. After about nine minutes it successfully separated from the rocket's last stage and was placed on its route. The cargo spacecraft began its resupply mission to the International Space Station also called Progress 85 or 85P. In this mission, the route used is the one that requires about two days.

Don't ever talk to me about people in Mars. It ain't happening, at least not in any of our lifetimes. We can't even go to the fucking moon which is right next door. If y'all can't get prime on the moon, don't waste your breath talking about going magnitudes further.

And until SLS is actually taking people to the moon, it hasn't done it yet. With how volatile NASA's manned space program has been since the shuttle retirement, I expect SLS to be dropped for a manned Venus or Sun landing.

NetMassimo,
@NetMassimo@mastodon.social avatar

@timelordiroh SLS must be used to send people to the Moon because it cost an awful lot of money. When SpaceX has Starship ready to do the job, NASA will sign a contract with them. That makes the timeline for a permanent Moonbase quite fuzzy.

NetMassimo,
@NetMassimo@mastodon.social avatar

@timelordiroh the dummies traveled "only" around the Moon in the first SLS/Orion mission.
As for SpaceX's Starship, they're still at a prototype stage, so it's normal that they fail.

NetMassimo,
@NetMassimo@mastodon.social avatar

@timelordiroh the timeline for the missions is already so stretched-up that a few more years don't matter. 😃

NetMassimo,
@NetMassimo@mastodon.social avatar

@timelordiroh SuperHeavy and Starship are so different from the Falcon9 that it's possible that even the company's engineers were surprised by what happened during the test! I guess the next test will have better precautions and I know that the pad protections got vastly improved already.

As for Mars, they were talking about crewed missions in the 1970s already, so it's nothing new. So far, it's just talk from NASA, Obama, Elon Musk, and anyone else.

NetMassimo,
@NetMassimo@mastodon.social avatar

@timelordiroh a journey to Mars is indeed a huge leap forward from a journey to the Moon, so I wonder when technologies will be ready to actually try something like that.

Is it just me, or is the ergonomics of a laptop (out-of-the-box) basically horrible?

I can only make it work with a bluetooth keyboard at desk height, and the laptop itself sitting on a stack of books to raise the screen to a height where I can look at it without hunching over.

NetMassimo,
@NetMassimo@mastodon.social avatar

@gregeganSF you're totally right! That's the main reason why my main PC is still a desktop (currently with a 27" screen).

An article published in the journal "Nature" reports the discovery of phosphorus, a key element for many biological processes, on Enceladus, the moon of the planet Saturn which has an underground ocean of liquid water. A team of researchers led by Frank Postberg of the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, analyzed data collected by the Cassini space probe.
