ah, good, Windows is forcing an integrated AI "assistant" into Win11.

As I've said recently, more and more, Microsoft is forcing me into the arms of Apple.

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsdeveloper/2023/05/23/bringing-the-power-of-ai-to-windows-11-unlocking-a-new-era-of-productivity-for-customers-and-developers-with-windows-copilot-and-dev-home/

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@neurovagrant That was my exact thought. Or Linux I guess.
I just had to undertake the effort to unfuck what Windows did in its last update (a Bing search bar will never again open randomly on my desktop). Wish I could uninstall Edge altogether. I shouldn't have to fix awful Windows things that happen by surprise on my computer. This is just going to be more awful b.s.

Those occasional weeks of Hashimotos-related arthralgia that are so bad it’s like random sets of my joints are being yanked apart and twisted sound, even after all of the OTC painkillers I can take - but I power through work and the gym anyway so nobody thinks it’s a big deal. And my doctor is a putz who thinks anyone who isn’t a big tough guy is exaggerating about pain anyway.

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@hacks4pancakes I didn't know you had Hashimoto's. My daughter's Hashimoto's wasn't diagnosed (by several doctors!). The medical examiner found it after she died...I've never trusted doctors since then. She suffered severe joint pain and other issues throughout high school and docs would shrug and say "She seems fine"...never checked her thyroid. Inexcusable failures, all of them.

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@hacks4pancakes @DataDrivenMD You're right, nobody takes thyroid disease seriously..in fact many family practice docs don't even think of it at all in my experience.

Natural Product Antibiotic Discovered 80 Years Ago Kills Drug Resistant Bacteria in Mice

The results of research led by scientists at Harvard Medical School suggest that a natural product antibiotic first isolated back in the 1940s may be effective against potentially lethal, multidrug resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacterial infections.

Just read another article about a person with cancer, whose family latched onto the "fight" framing. The patient is a "fighter" and "cancer picked this fight but we know you'll finish it!" I just hate this kind of framing. It implies it's the patient's "fault" if they "lose"--they weren't "strong" enough or whatever. Just support people with cancer without turning them into boxers in the ring ok?

Don't like my photos? Don't like my stupid bad takes on things? Don't want to read tedious, boring stuff about elections or surveillance technology and law?

Mastodon has an actual button you can push for this. No, it's not the reply button. That won't stop me from being stupid and wrong in the future. It's the block button.

It makes us disappear to each other. It's like I never existed. If you'd prefer a Mastodon experience without me, feel free to click it. I won't mind.

It is obviously bad if a senior DC police official was aiding the Proud Boys, but it also won’t help the broad partisan divide in confidence in law enforcement. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/19/dc-police-proud-boys-lamond/

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@pbump And another data point for why Republicans are so confident and the rest are mostly not. Because the police are who we think they are and do the things we think they do. And Republicans love that.

@bookstodon Often, lonnnnnnggg books get overlooked. (I am guilty of this myself.) So, Bibliophiles, tell us which HUGE tomes are worth the hefty page count.

A few of my rec's:

11/22/63, Stephen King
1Q84, Haruki Murakami
2666, Roberto Balaňo
Gnomon, Nick Harkaway
The Third Person, Emma Grove
Wayward, Chuck Wendig

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Just finished Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson. Very long, very worth it. I felt 1Q84 wasn't worth the time spent. The Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton...extreeeeemely long, didn't have to be. So I guess I only have one thumbs up? Well, I'll add a thumbs up for Dune as well. And The Stand.

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@ozofriendly @kimlockhartga @bookstodon Oh I haven't heard of Swan Song. I'll put it on my list!

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@kimlockhartga @ozofriendly @bookstodon Yes, Broken Earth was unique! That's one of my top criteria for a stand-out novel/series. Really unique worlds or societies that I haven't already seen in a hundred other perfectly good SFF stories. Along those lines, Poseiden's Children by Alastair Reynolds is a series off the beaten path.

Army officially designates Fort Moore, dropping Confederate name Benning

Fort Pickett in Virginia became Fort Barfoot in March. Fort Hood, Texas, was renamed Fort Cavazos on Tuesday. Fort Bragg in North Carolina will be redesignated Fort Liberty next month. Later this year in Georgia, Fort Gordon outside Augusta will be renamed Fort Eisenhower.

Good riddance to a terrible mistake: traitor appeasement!

Ban Fox News disinformation and Putin's agenda in facilities -- it's not the only channel working for enemies. You can find Newsmax and OANN on the cable subscriptions DOD pays for. But they can all be blocked. Even local commanders could institute such a policy. It just takes a modicum of guts and principles.

Anderson Cooper: people who decided they're done with CNN after the recent debacle are choosing a Trump-free "silo"

No Anderson, Trump's lies, treason, and criminality have permeated every fucking corner of American life. Dropping CNN like a sack full of angry vipers will not end that in any way. It'll just give CNN what it deserves for participating in the damage.

@neurovagrant I saw that! Cool. I'm interested in the Google Watch but I can't find any information about whether I can use it for distance and heart rate without installing the Fitbit app on my phone. It seems to require it. I don't want to create a Fitbit account and have more data shared with more f*ing companies so maybe it's a no on the Google Watch. ☹️

I keep telling y'all. If you want legislators to stop the mass killing by implementing the gun control we obviously need, you need to buy them. You need to literally give them MORE CASH than the gun lobby. That's all there is to it. You have to purchase them. It's legal, that's how the gun lobby does it.

I don't like it. It's not right. But this is America. This is the system we are crushed by. This is how it works.

@RobertMaguire He apparently completely missed that little thing about serving the nation. Many govt workers would make more money outside of govt but they do their jobs because they have a sense of service. Thomas should resign. He's dead wood who's obviously serving something else.
