Good Morning, all

As today our Second-Past-The-Post Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acts out the next scene in his performative tragi-comic melodrama entitled 'Stop The Boats', I am still seething at last night's report.

Our Home Office is currently granting asylum to Rwandan nationals fleeing President Kagame's repressive regime while Sunak is legislating to assert, ipse dixit, Rwanda is a 'safe country' to which we should transport our own asylum seekers.

On Nick Ferrari is wringing his hands (after washing his hands) at the number of 'illegal immigrants' who are drowning in the English Channel as he supports Second-Past-The-Post PM Sunak's 'Stop The Boats' performance.

Poor Nick has quaffed the ' Kool-Aid: they're only 'illegal' cos the have defined them so. And the traffickers' business would be undercut and the boats stopped if HMG chose to process asylum claims before claimants cross the water.

MAGA Americans harken to the #2A as a bulwark against dictatorship.

MAGA Americans cheer on Donald Trump when he lays out his plans to become the first Emperor of the American Empire if he is elected in November.

You cannot accuse them of #CognitiveDissonance because that assumes Magats are thinking...

Good Morning, all

I understand our Second-Past-The-Post PM Wishi Sunak must call a GE by 26th March if it is to take place at the same time as May's locals but many pundits are betting he'll bottle it (like Brown, and that went well) and postpone it to October or later...

I still want a ! If you're like me you probably feel like a caterpillar trying to reach the end of a bungy rope but the good news is that it must happen some time. And we'll get a butterfly as a result!

The one person right now who you might have expect to be called to speak in a debate of racism in the House of Commons would be Diane Abbott who, subject of a high profile incidence of racist language from a Tory donor... yet the Speaker said that despite Abbott rising over 40 times to speak during the debate, he ran out of time to call her.

If you wanted to confirm to the average voter that the political system is racist, this would be a good way to do it.

PhilipCJames,

@ChrisMayLA6

Point of information, Mr Speaker...

According to my less-than-well-thumbed copy of Erskine May, there is a strict order of questions to the Prime Minister laid out in the Order Paper for the day and Mr Speaker was simply following the protocol and calling those listed on that Order Paper.

It was not a Commons debate as such - it was Questions to the Prime Minister and most back-bench MPs have to wait weeks for a chance to ask a PMQ. Unfair to pre-empt!

PhilipCJames,
@PhilipCJames@mas.to avatar

@ChrisMayLA6

Having had his wrist slapped for selecting a Labour amendment to an SNP opposition day motion, I'm guessing Hoyle chose to play it safe in not breaking convention by calling Ms Abbott.

After all, a Speaker serves at the whim of MPs and pissing off at least 20 scheduled to ask would've have been, as YES MINISTER put it, "courageous."

DA presently doesn't hold the Labour whip so Starmer's intervention was likely calculated more to attack the Nastiz than to defend DA.

PhilipCJames,
@PhilipCJames@mas.to avatar

@ChrisMayLA6

What's more concerning is this:

James O'Brien is incensed that Hoyle called Mark Francois instead of giving Diane Abbott a sort of 'Right of Reply' so I rechecked the Order Paper for 13/03:

https://commonsbusiness.parliament.uk/Document/86044/Html?subType=Standard#_idTextAnchor001

And checked Hansard for the occasion:

https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2024-03-13/debates/0F85365D-BD56-4647-B8B5-EC356A1BD132/Engagements

It seems overran and Hoyle got only as far as 12 (Sarah Dyke).

Why then call Mark Francois, who was NOT on the Order Paper? For balance? Mark Francois for balance? An oxymoron...

Is it morally wrong to offer £3000 to failed asylum seekers to be transported to Rwanda instead of being a continuing burden on the public purse? asks this failed government and 's Tom Swarbrick.

Yet another false dichotomy from Rishi Sunak's Nastiz: if refugees cannot be returned home because their safety would be at risk, why not allow them to work here, filling long-standing vacancies and paying taxes.

Appalling as they are, shouldn't he be shunned - and his £10 million 'donation' returned by the Nastiz - because of the apparent conflict of interest that his company obtains significant amounts of work in our public health care system....

Nikki secures first victory of Republican primaries with Washington DC win - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/mar/04/nikki-haley-secures-first-victory-of-republican-primaries-with-washington-dc-win "Haley is the first woman to win a Republican primary, her campaign has said, but faces steep odds with Donald expected to secure the nomination" so how significant is this?

@glynmoody
Perhaps Nikki Haley is looking across the Pond at our Second-Past-The-Post Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who became PM without further consultation with party members or indeed the British public after Thick Lizzy resigning 49 days after being selected as Tory party leader (and making a dog's dinner of being PM).

Mayhap Haley is banking on Trump winning the Candidacy but being deselected on conviction and gaoling. Who would the GOP turn to, to field a POTUS candidate at then?

Don't hold your breath!

German & Belgian citizens resident in the UK were not allowed to vote in the (despite them having a dog in the game - losing UK freedom of movement, etc) whereas citizens of Rwanda resident here DID have a Brexit vote, on account that the former German/Belgian colony joined the British Commonwealth in 2009 (despite never having been part of the British Empire).

Same applied to Portuguese and Mozambican citizens.

We all know will, after prevarication designed to bolster Donald Trump's presidential bid, rule that the President of the United States does NOT have absolute immunity from prosecution for any of their acts in office.

To rule otherwise would be to grant Joe Biden carte blanche to order Seal Team Six to assassinate the justices of the Supreme Court before January 2025.

Thus solving yet another of the problems Don the Con has saddled us with.

Good Morning, all

A caller to on the subject of James Cleverly depicting the regular peace protests in London as "Mob Rule" starts with "I believe in the right to peaceful protest..."

There is of course a But: "But if the demonstrators are breaking the law..."

Nick Ferrari interrupts: "But they're not [breaking the law] are they - THAT'S THE PROBLEM..."

Anyone else get the feeling Nick's support for the right to protest is conditional on who you are?

PhilipCJames,
@PhilipCJames@mas.to avatar

@TCatInReality

They don't even need to be autocrats - any democratic constitution that grants majoritarian power to a minority (like Boris Johnson's 80 seat majority on 44% of the vote) has the right to pass Bad Law that is perfectly legal except...

Except when an overarching law like the or allows the courts to judge Bad Law as unlawful.

The Nastiz get this - this is why they wanted to leave the EU (to nullify the ECFR) and why they want to abrogate the ECHR and HRA.

Personally, I've paid more for the 100% Green Tariff from my electricity supplier to support the transition to renewables and have done so for more than a decade.

After Putin invaded Ukraine driving fossil fuel prices up I expected a dividend, in the form of unchanged green electricity tariffs, as the cost of wind turbines et al has not changed.

Imagine therefore my consternation to find renewable energy prices have been raised in line with fossil fuel costs.

Is the Cosmos one gigantic simulation?

π (Pi) is a transcendental number that can be calculated to the nth decimal place without end (as far as I know the record is Pi to 100 trillion - 10^12 decimal places have been calculated to date).

Which leaves me wondering if our ability to measure, rather than calculate Pi provides an indication of whether spacetime is simulated or not? As we understand computers, wouldn't the word-size limit resolution?

    Understood, in terms of 'fundamental'.

    In other senses, I'd quibble as to whether such movements stem "from the roots." My experience is that so-called 'grass-roots' movements are often subject to astro-turfing 😆
