I watch people get bullied into absolutist positions all the time.

It is entirely possible to deplore the massacre of civilians .... either Israeli or Palestinian, and still deplore the power-brokers who have spent years eagerly fanning the flames of this conflict. Those fuckers never gave a shit about regular people. It was always about power. Don't let them claim moral superiority with rhetoric. They have none.

So, a co-worker has a cold today.

Got me thinking. I honestly thought having a pandemic will finally stop people from showing up sick at work. But it doesn’t.

I used to be one of those who will suck up any illness and continue work, seeing patients, even without a mask 🫢😧.

But Covid changed my perspective on this. If we can, we shouldn’t work when we’re sick. It shouldn’t be a radical idea.

@sortius @DocCarms It still haunts me that simply making an effort not to infect others by staying at home or wearing a mask got so politicized during the pandemic, that a majority will blithely ignore a simple and effective tool for ideological rather than rational reasons.

I found some baby cucumbers at the veggie market near me. They have fine skin and few seeds. I’m going to make ginger, shiso pickles with them tomorrow

@sortius @jpm I have to respectfully disagree. Taking mushrooms past the water-rendering stage and into Maillard reaction territory gives them a fundamentally different flavour. And if you're looking for a vegetarian stock base, getting those mushrooms to that stage first gives you the richest, most delicious stock ever (with a little kombu, it's magnificent).

One thing I notice these interviews of Trump voters never manage to unpack is the emotional affinity to Trump.

Everything they list that is bothering them has been better addressed by Democrat policies and legislation, but their belief, despite hard, tangible proof, that Trump will meet their needs is... staggering.

What hole is the Imaginary Trump filling in these people's psyches?

So... let's do a thought experiment. Let's play this out to the end. Trump gets back in and exterminates 'the right people'. Piles of bodies.

Will that really address the awful appetite this woman is feeling? Will it sate her hunger?

No.

What is that hunger. What in her cannot be sated? To identify that is a way to formulate a response that will actually address what is going on with her and those like her.

I was actually extrapolating on the woman you quoted's fantasy.

I'm pointing out that - if she got what she thinks she wants, it wouldn't satisfy her. Probably because what she really wants, and speaking what she really wants, would destroy her sense of self completely.

Because I'm feeling under the weather and sorry for myself, I'm making silken tofu.

I've tried making it with nigari, which really only produced curds that can be pressed. Then I settled on gypsum for a while, but then I was reading about gluconolactate, so I ordered some and I'm trying that today. My plan is to try 1/2 the soy milk with that and, if it doesn't work, I can do gypsum for the remainder.

I wish I could use store bought soymilk but it never works.

There is one single fact that gives me hope: all the people who were gullible enough to swallow the GOP's never-ending firehose of lies have been accounted for.

Kevin McCarthy claiming that the Democrats are responsible for the predicament the GOP house find themselves in now is only going to land for people who were already indoctrinated. And they voted for Trump last time.

And they couldn't constitute a majority.
