3.5 years of constant caution and sacrifice, withholding dinners at restaurants & concerts, and I let one professional event encourage me to take needless risks. I spoke in a room with 80 people without a mask. I asked the event planner to have air filters in the room, but she said "their effectiveness for Covid prevention is limited," which is, of course, BS, and that should've been when I withdrew from the event. I let my guard down, and now I have my first infection. Be safe out there!

My misanthrope, usually held tightly in check, has slipped its leash today.

I find the fact that every single media outlet is going on and on about 5 privileged people dying on a costly adventure to visit the titanic obscene, when the media could not bother to spare more than a half a minute reporting on the 500 (approx - apparently even counting them was a bore) migrants who drowned off the coast of Greece last week, or the almost 40 who died day before yesterday off the Canary Islands.

@Greenseer You know... I don't want anyone to think I don't feel those lives had any value. They weren't all billionaires, and they all had mothers and partners and perhaps children who will be distraught. But so do every single one of those who died off Greece - whose parting sight of the sea was not one of wonder or delight, but of terror, and an overwhelming drive to better their lives and the lives of their families.

While I would much prefer that large tech companies like Meta fuck off forever and that I never have to encounter them, I think this is, in reality, something of a fantasy. They're parasitic - they'll seek out eyeballs wherever they are.

But you don't have to use. You don't have to click. You can personally refused to engage. You can help educate others on the hidden costs of the convenience they offer.

But they aren't going to stop trying to colonize. It's the nature of parasites to do this

Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.

Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)

SO.

This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".

Republicans have one play: paint Biden as corrupt. They ALWAYS do this. It's like everyone's forgotten the crap they've been saying about Democrats since I've been of voting age. Bill Clinton was a serial rapist. Hillary was a lesbian. Barack Obama was a Kenyan Muslim. They're all Socialists or Communists or Fascists.

They do this EVERY time. I remember when they accused Rep. Steve Cohen of Memphis of inappopriately Tweeting a young college student -- turns out it was his DAUGHTER.

I talk a lot about the complications of being raised AFAB and the expectations that come with it, along with the odd treatment trans men get in the LGBT community where we're not really treated like men.

Just... considering if you're weaponizing our experiences against us. I honestly think a lot of this is subconscious, but trans men are more likely to be told they're expressing toxic masculinity or mansplaining because we're seen as less of a threat than cis men. And it can be very hard to be genuine when we've been taught since a young age to be nice, to be the mediator, the one who solves the world's problems. To be quiet. To be seen and not heard. To never be angry.

But then when we're vulnerable, we're accused of not being men. When we express righteous anger, we're dangerous. It would be easier if this came from outside of the community, but it tends to be worse in progressive circles.

So, just think. Just take a moment and think.

@deilann @KevinLikesMaps Reading both your posts, I can see how this puts you in an impossible situation. Many of our cultures markers for masculinity are also identified as aggressive and sexist.
