  1. Do you use a cover artist or design your own covers? Share your cover art.

Not the final version, but should be pretty close to this.

Finally finished a solid enough draft of the new chapter and inserted it into the main book. Now I'll have to modify any chapters affected by the new stuff, go back and address the revisions I've been ignoring while I work on this chapter, and then run through the whole thing for final edits. Should be ready to go sometime in the next 50-100 years if I can keep up my current rapid pace.

  1. OMG! What happened to your MC's parents?

  1. Describe your perfect writing conditions.

It's a dark and stormy night. And it's quiet... too quiet. The lights flicker, then the power goes out. When it's restored, there's a body on the floor; it's me. I begin to write.

5. What's the best thing about being a writer?

I think maybe it's reading back what I've written after I've got it the way I want it.

We give such weird advice to kids. I remember being 12, and very shy, and people would tell me to just be myself. Now 30 years later, I'm 42, and still trying to figure that out.

Did. Shatner. Write this question? (I have a feeling I won't be the only one to reference Shatner in response to this prompt.)

Write the saddest sentence you can think of.

5. Where do you see the future of publishing in ten years' time?

AI authors querying AI agents to be published by AI publishing houses for AI readers. There will be underground networks of human authors desperately trying to get their books into the hands of human readers.

8 Do you write your entire piece and then edit, or go back and edit while you’re still writing?

I edit as I go. If/when I finish, I go back and edit some more. I see advice against this, but it's how I like to do it. One problem I do have with my method is that by the end the earliest chapters have been edited more than the later ones, so I guess I need to try to put more focus on second-half editing. It's easy to get into an I'm done mindset after the last chapter.

12 grammar/typography

I blend colloquialism in dialogues with a strict narrative style.

My long sentences includes detailed, immersive descriptions.

I prefer an archaic style but I'm unafraid of breaking grammar rules.

I use active voice for enhanced immersion and vary dialogue setup on context.

I don’t adhere to specific style guides but focus on readability.

I boldly split infinitives and usually write in OpenDyslexic, but export in Merriweather.

Saposcat,
@Saposcat@mendeddrum.org avatar

@HeliaXyana I'm often surprised at how quickly I run out of characters and I'll look at other people's toots and marvel at how much they fit in. I mean, I know some instances have a larger character limit, but even with the standard limit some people seem to be able to pack a lot in.

10. What do you say to people who tell you they're frustrated writers?

I don't know, I don't think anyone has ever said that to me. I guess depending on what it was, I'd either commiserate or share what's worked for me when I've had the same issues.

If you have to do something you really don't want to do, how do you get yourself to do it?

Saposcat,
@Saposcat@mendeddrum.org avatar

@RickiTarr sometimes I'll make a to do list. After I get the ball rolling by accomplishing some easier tasks and feeling the satisfaction of crossing them off, I may feel up for tackling the harder thing.

Translation software is normally a godsend, given that I work in a retail setting in a very international area, but sometimes it fails pretty spectacularly. I'm pretty sure the customer who was frustrated with what I was trying to explain to her didn't mean to tell me she loved me very much before demanding free shipping.

Saposcat,
@Saposcat@mendeddrum.org avatar

@VampiresAndRobots "I love you very much, now give me free shipping" would make a great greeting card.

31, Will you be writing today? How do you feel about your writing journey over the last year?

No, I won't write today, too busy.
The last year was better than any writing year I ever had, and that's thanks to the hashtags I play with. I got to know my characters really well, I got ideas, I saw other people's struggles and just felt good in this community. Which, in turn, was a great motivation for writing.

Saposcat,
@Saposcat@mendeddrum.org avatar

@gahlearner I agree, the interactions I've had with writers on these hashtags has definitely changed the way I think about my writing.

29. Do you have a favourite letter of the alphabet? How does it feature in your work?

I don't consciously have a favourite letter. I don't know that I could single one out. Even a favourite combination is hard to choose. Maybe the silent h could be my favorite. It just kinda stands awkwardly, not quite sure why it's there. Like, am I even needed for this word? They say it's not right without me, but I feel like I make no real contribution.

Today's theme is Normal!

You can take this test to see how "Normal" you are, and also how radically left wing you are! LOL Please share the results if you feel like it, or do nothing at all, because it really doesn't matter!

  1. If you could remove one rule of grammar, which would you choose?

English isn't my native language hence it'd feel presumptuous to consider changing grammar rules.
That said, language is a living, changing construct. These rules aren't set in stone and will change through (lack of) use over time or by some language keepers deciding on changed rules (as happened for German grammar during my lifetime). So, these rules may be there for a reason, but not forever.

Saposcat,
@Saposcat@mendeddrum.org avatar

@gahlearner I love language innovations. I really enjoy the evolution of language.

Dec.16. Tropes I dislike, w/o insulting other club members?
Whatever I've been overly exposed to recently, but if it's engaging enough I'm usually willing to overlook it.
2nd part: some comments that make me doubt myself aren't directed at me. Someone mentions how much they hate a thing and I think oh that sounds like a thing I do. But people should express opinions & preferences. I don't have to take it personally. I try to be mindful of inadvertently insulting other writers.

10. What aspect of your work are you most proud of? Don't be shy.

Pleh. I'm not good with this sort of question.

Some of my words work especially well together. I've managed to write some funny bits. I've kept at it despite doubts. I don't know.

I, admittedly, curse way too much, but I just adore a faux curse. When I was a kid, one of my Mom's friends was a very proper Southern lady. Instead of saying "They think their shit don't stink" she would say, "Some people think they poo poo vanilla ice cream".

What is your favorite faux curse?

@RickiTarr I love "What the cuss" from Fantastic Mr Fox
