Consummate tinkerer living on the sunny South Coast, UK.

By day I am one of those people that "does something with computers".

(The #baking of bread may also be involved.)

By night I may be found wandering around #NoMansSky or #ElderScrollsOnline, building stupid things in both.

At the weekends I'm either freeing the magic blue smoke from electronica or tinkering with something until it breaks.

#EFF and #ORG supporter.

Had a #PGP key since 2000 and no-one has ever used it.

I don’t hate Bluesky—but I see it as a challenge.

People use because they believe Mastodon is unwelcoming. Okay, let’s build an incredibly welcoming Fediverse environment.

People on Bluesky say that Mastodon lacks a glitzy UI. Fine, we’ll create a UI so whiz bang, you’ll think you’re living in the future.

People on Bluesky say Mastodon is not fun. Then we’ll give you so many fun options, it will be like visiting Studio 54.

Challenge accepted.

<rant>

I'm getting really bored with the whole "Mastodon doesn't have quotes" thing.

It's like listening to a whiny toddler standing outside of two shops:

"waaah, the shop has no sweets"

"Well, that other shop has sweets"

"But I want sweets from that shop"

"Go to the other shop, they have the sweets you like"

"waaah, sweets"

</rant>

SimonJohnGreen,

@atomicpoet

Oh, I think we are both on the same page about this.

It's just right now, at least once a day, I'm seeing some chucklefuck bemoaning Mastodons lack of quotes and how that means that <todays shiny object> is better and will be brilliant.

These people know that Mastodon != the Fediverse and that other options are out there.

It's tiresome tbh.

SimonJohnGreen, to random

It's becoming wearisome watching people on a Mastodon instance bemoan the lack of quoting or searching.

The Fediverse != Mastodon alone, other instances already have these facilities built in.

Just trying out the plugin by re-upping an old post and watching the server go brrrrr.

SimonJohnGreen,

@pfefferle

Hi, I tried this today and thought you might like some feedback.

I installed OK, author pages OK, can find myself on mastodon.social OK (but not on calckey.social for some reason), can see that there are past WordPress Posts OK.

The weird thing though, when I tried to follow myself from mastodon.social it went to a 'waiting for authorisation' message, as if my WordPress site had to authorise the follow.

I couldn't see how to do that.

Also, how would I update the Profile (avatar, bio etc)?

Looks cool though.

Cheers for your work!

SimonJohnGreen,

@pfefferle

So I found myself on calckey.

Still processing the follow though.

Maybe my domain is not federating?

Looks good tho.

I think the 'Welcome" text in the plugin may be slightly wrong?

Is it missing a leading @ ?

"People can follow you by using the username Simon@simonjohngreen.endofinternet.net"

(I had to add a @ at the start for calckey to find me, but I didn't have to add one for Mastodon to find me 🤷‍♂️.)

SimonJohnGreen,

@pfefferle

Hi and thanks for getting back to me, it's very much appreciated.

I also get an 'Awaiting Authorisation' message on Mastodon when attempting to follow the WordPress author.

(This happens when the AP plugin is installed and when it is not installed.)

All of the other info (bio etc.) is being pulled in correctly.

I might have to put it down to the fact that I'm running the latest WP and the plugin says "Untested with your version of WordPress"

(Just FYI)

Thank you for your work on this.

SimonJohnGreen,

@pfefferle

Just to follow up on this.

Using this:
https://blog.rac.me.uk/tag/owasp3/

I updated '/etc/modsecurity/crs-setup.conf'

Searched for rule '900220'

And added (rather than uncomment the existing rule):
SecAction \
"id:900220,\
phase:1,\
nolog,\
pass,\
t:none,\
setvar:'tx.allowed_request_content_type=|application/x-www-form-urlencoded| |multipart/form-data| |multipart/related| |text/xml| |application/xml| |application/soap+xml| |application/x-amf| |application/json| |application/octet-stream| |application/csp-report| |application/xss-auditor-report| |text/plain| |application/activity+json|'"

Confirmed that ModSecurity was still enable:
/etc/modsecurity/modsecurity.conf

SecRuleEngine DetectionOnly

SecRuleEngine On

Restarted Apache.

And now I can follow / unfollow the author at will.

Thank you for pointing me to this.

Cheers!

I love graphs.

I love tinkering with stuff.

So, a pretty graphing package that looks at my web traffic?

In real-time?

Sold.

Anyone knows how long it can take for changes to my instance to take effect on other instances? I changed the nyame and icon like 12+ hours ago but so far it seems to not have taken effect yet

SimonJohnGreen,

@GayCookie

It seems to take ages.

I recently boosted one of my own pixelfed photos here on calckey.

Calckey people couldn't see the pixelfed account profile image, yet accounts on other instances could.

It took a day or so before it was visible over here.

SimonJohnGreen,

@GayCookie

If you ask in a post what people are seeing I'm sure you'll get some screenshots back.

SimonJohnGreen,

@GayCookie

Have you turned it off and on again?

I wanted to be able to shout "turn the bloody lights on" and have something happen.

I am never going to buy a but I would make one.

Make one and then put it in a cool perspex cube with a scrolling clock?

I have a couple of enviroment sensors attached to various boards dotted around the house.

I got fed up with watching the bus drive off into the distance when I was walking to the stop.

So, I did a thing.

Written in with and using an on top of a , this is a that grabs the online bus timetable and displays how long until the next arrival.

A nice tip, thanks to @dev

If you want to suppress the "replied to post" in Timelines and Notifications and only see the reply try this. It worked for me on calckey.social and blahaj.zone

You can use the following custom CSS (Settings > General > Custom CSS) to achieve this:

.reply-to { display: none; }

SimonJohnGreen,

@Natasha_Jay @dev

I wonder how you add that to a button?

And maybe another button to reverse it?

🤔

SimonJohnGreen,

@Natasha_Jay @dev

Ha, nice.

I was just messing with the widget button code but I have zero idea about the syntax etc.

NetworkManager: automatically switch between Ethernet and Wi-Fi

Turn off Ethernet when connected to Wi-Fi, and vice versa, automatically.

SimonJohnGreen,

@interpipes @neil

They are headless, with things like enviroment sensors on them that produce graphs, which are pulled into an internet facing server.

Maybe I could disable / enable the interface when they lose connection to the router, I dunno.

I did say "The only way I could get them to reconnect was a reboot."

😆

As usual, there are multiple ways to achieve the same end result.

For context tho, it's quicker for me to reboot my Chromebook running Mint when it drops an Internet connection than it is to faff with the Network Manager.

Horses for courses I guess.
