Sknashville

@Sknashville@theatl.social

On Mastodon, I generally stick to the topics of tech, maker type projects, and gardening/horticulture with a strong emphasis on contributing things I do myself. I also enjoy following others who lean that direction. My day job involves software development, distributed computing, data analytics, and IoT. I also make homemade pizza that’ll make you slap ya mamma.

It's time to ditch your old microSD card. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYN3ub8Qb_I

@geerlingguy - working around the pi 5 SBC form factor still seems a bit kludgy. It's sort of like buying attachments for a kitchenaid mixer versus getting the dedicated tool (the compute module and a carrier) that does it way better.

I guess hats are sort of like the kitchenaid ice cream bowl attachment, and a CM carrier is like a big fancy breville ice cream maker with refrigeration.

I'm using a Raspberry Pi in a 1U rackmount case as a Frigate NVR with AI person and object detection. Here's how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wkVGcdI2vk

Sknashville,

@geerlingguy - That’s very cool! I’ve thought about setting up an AI task for my lorex system to scrape extra info from the video feeds. Would be fun to recognize types of insects/animals, make and model of vehicles, identify types of objects, etc. I’d find creative ways to train models for personal amusement.

@geerlingguy - Does it have any sort of ports that allow it to be connected to full size monitor(s)? My old dell mini was more of an “easy to carry computer”, but I never used the actual keyboard or screen unless I needed to get into bios or something.

Not sure why these took so long to deliver, but I found a 16 pin 50mm fpc cable supplier on ebay. The seller had both single sided cables and reverse with the exposed conductive side flipped around on the opposite face. Need to double-check these work with the 5, but it opens up flexibility with positioning pcie hats.

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@geerlingguy - OK - so here goes a functional test to see if it can at least see the drive. Seems to work. Pcie3 is specified in .conf
Need a test for drop in throughput vs. the shorter cable.

@geerlingguy yeah, there’s a bit of loss with the ebay cables.

My Pi 5 HAT database is growing—though only a couple of these early revisions seem to aim for 'HAT+' compatibility. https://pipci.jeffgeerling.com/hats

@geerlingguy - waveshare has a hat that’s not on your list.

By the way:
Mystery of the sata SSD. It can see the device, but no dice getting it to see the drive. Do you know of anything special I need to configure (you may not know, just grasping at straws).

@geerlingguy - buy a bunch of these little 6 inch extension cords. I use them to solve plug orientation issues. This includes times where I have wall warts on power strips, and the orientation blocks access to the adjacent plug(s).

@geerlingguy - Fingers crossed for are additional pcie lanes (probably not, but would be a nice surprise). If I start adding CM5 nodes to my cluster, I think I’m going with blades this go round - unless deskpi adds single node power off functionality to their next board.

@geerlingguy - for the luckfox, I noticed the github bug report link. Would that be the appropriate place to put repro steps for getting it running? Then again - man not be worth it (orange pi is way better anyways).

"It's happening!"

I placed three orders with DigiKey throughout 2022 for Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4. 1, 2, and 8 GB lite modules.

They all shipped this week, finally! Going to do some CM4 testing again.

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@geerlingguy - same here. Ordered an rpi CM4 a couple of days ago, and it was cathartic getting the ship notification the next day like “the before times” haha.

Orange Pi CM4. It's not as fast as Pi CM4, but so far I've had decent luck getting it running on an official IO board. It didn't boot on another third party CM4 carrier board, however. More testing ongoing as always! https://github.com/geerlingguy/sbc-reviews/issues/26

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@geerlingguy - that delivery was quick! Orange must have stocked the US warehouse. I noticed the five and five plus deliver in two days instead of three weeks when coming directly from china. Waveshare/geekworm/ali express always take forever.

Turing RK1: RK3588, up to 32 GB RAM on this little Jetson-pin-compatible Arm64 SoM. Testing it now.

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@geerlingguy - lucky. You got yours early. Which carrier are you using?

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@geerlingguy - which Jetson carrier did you test it in? The one that came with the original nano (the B01 for example)? I have a J202 with a 5v 4a PSU that should work since RK3588 PSUs generally need that kind of power, but if it’s more than a VCC issue (ie - some issue with carrier firmware that they’re likely to punt to recomputer/seeed), I may cancel the pre-order.

Burnout is real and happens and I may be in the early stages of it. I'm working on doing better of learning the early signs.

https://relay.fm/conduit/61

For me my warning signs are:

  • I stop cooking
  • I stop eating
  • Retail Therapy
  • Communication Stops
  • I focus more on personal projects than professional ones
Sknashville,

@kjaymiller - Personal projects are skunkworks for the professional ones :). Or did you mean personal projects with no potential for professional benefits?

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@geerlingguy just missing the waveshare core (luckfox) and orange pi cm4s.

I have not tried cramming them into the super 6c yet, but they do seem to work with other carriers without any issues.

@geerlingguy - I’m so spoiled by CM4 carriers and how they have m.2 m-key already. I was able to get those to boot my imaging the nvme directly. I take it the latest rpi firmware doesn’t do that automatically.

For everyone that's been saying, "Oh, what about CM4, I can't get CM4!" when I'm saying supply of is normalising, go look at https://rpilocator.com/?cat=CM4. There is plenty of CM4 in channel, yes, including the US🇺🇸 where Digikey has literally hundreds of units in stock!

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@aallan - I’ve still never seen a CM4 at a microcenter. The employees don’t even know what they are. Ought to just start shipping them CM4s so they’ll always have them lol.

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@aallan - I was just joking about microcenter stocking it. I was imagining asking a store employee if Pis were in stock, the employee saying “no - this is all we have” gesturing towards a shelf filled with CM4s, and feeling excited. I didn’t realize they were primarily industrial though.

What’s something not abusive or hateful that you’re afraid to say on Mastodon because ppl and opinions.

I’ll go first - people here are way more judgy than the other socials. (I don’t use the meta ones)

Sknashville,
@Sknashville@theatl.social avatar

@kjaymiller no, the comment wasn’t targeted at you or your comment. I was contributing a “something that’s not abusive or hateful but afraid to say on mastodon” to your discussion stew. Yours is “people are too judgy” and mine is “people need to learn to let go”.

Basically - same concept as avoiding getting wrapped up in work when on vacation, or you’ll ruin the vacation lol.
