    ah my wife has a different relationship with her records than mine - one time I replaced her Bangles record, it was scratchy and the cover was gross and I found a better earlier pressing in mint shape and then tossed the other out and she was like THAT'S THE ONE I HAD WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL YOU ASSHOLE

    what i did in the kitchen today haha sounds lame - i replaced the whole LED bulb fixture, that's it, unscrewed some screws and tore out some wires and attached em to something else and put screws in - but all done standing on my tiptoes on a stepladder, on the top where i don't think you're supposed to go, my wife holding me steady 'cause i was nervous, jamming a screwdriver to the roof. but it's done now and the sun is down and the test! - i turned on the lights and SO BRIGHT! very happy

    this is a - this is an aside from something @RickiTarr was talking about but her threads get huge and don't need a billion tangents.
    The sound of a banjo means something VERY DIFFERENT to british and american music.
    In America of course the banjo is like - appalachia, mountain people, bluegrass, "down home", whatever. It's very RURAL
    In Britain the banjo was a massive instrument in music hall music - think "I"m Henry The 8th I Am" which was an old music hall tune... it is classy, old fashioned

    @RickiTarr it's indeed a world instrument for sure. I was listening to some orchestral pop, straight up 100 piece orchestral pop songs and from a British musician and hearing banjo in there which struck me as dumb until I remembered the music hall.
    The Kinks have banjo on some of their 60s records but not for anything that sounds American, the really really really British sounding stuff!

    Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

    When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?

    @RickiTarr on one hand, a major vs minor scale DOES feel happy/sad no matter what the timbre right? But on the other hand we have 1000+ years of Western music to fall back on. I always wondered if people who listen to non-12 tone music, like people from India with their rich musical history, what emotions are evoked by the different scales ,etc.
    I mean I'll accept almost any answer someone tells me. I do think some of the saddest songs use only major chords! (ex: I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry)

    @RickiTarr no. I think we all have our musical tastes and background and personal associations.
    Think of your own history with music. Me for instance found Mahler boring for about 4 decades and now I get all weepy and emotional listening to his 5th symphony. Our own goosebumps change based on our time on the planet etc so how can we expect someone else to mirror us?
