As a young fella just getting into in the late eighties my first impressions of David Sanborn were that he was corny and overly smooth, in an unhip bag I didn't dig with guys like Metheny and the Breckers. Then he blew my fucking mind with the Night Music show and I've respected him ever since. There was almost no really cool weird music on TV in 1988-90 except that show, and man, Night was legit!!! Nick Cave, Bongwater, Pere Ubu, Miles Davis...

All I know is that the episode with Leonard Cohen and Sonny Rollins (and including Ken Nordine) blew my young mind.

It was definitely the first time I saw Sonny Rollins blowing his saxophone and it was awe inspiring.

In today’s NY Times is a story about Master Tapes Rescue, an outfit that preserves old studio tapes that contains this nugget about tapes they have found:

“we found a Jerry Garcia tape from the ’70s, a soundtrack he did that’s never been released.”

Happy heavenly 80th birthday to Paul Kantner, co-founder of Jefferson Airplane and architect of brilliant sci-fi inspired albums like "Blows Against the Empire." Here's an in-depth interview I did with Paul in 2005. https://www.jambase.com/article/remembering-paul-kantner-2005-interview-with-steve-silberman

Superleopold,
@Superleopold@heads.social avatar

@stevesilberman I remember a time close to when you did this interview and I introduced to the head of Special Collections at UCSC. You mentioned the fan letter that Kantner had written to Heinlein when Kantner changed the name of the group to Starship based on what he read.

Superleopold,
@Superleopold@heads.social avatar

@stevesilberman The Special Collections director said that she was looking at all the fan mail they had in the archive, trying to figure out what to do with it and had just randomly picked Kantner’s letter that week. A great moment of serendipity.

I'm finally listening to Clifton Chenier Live At Tipitina's, many weeks after it was delivered from the Tipitina's Record Club. Some great blues and zydeco on here, sourced from a soundboard recording on an old cassette from 1980. Tight band was playing straight fire. C.J. Chenier sounding good on alto sax (I didn't know he played sax!) but Sonny Landreth steals the show on guitar in his only recording with Chenier's band.

@jasonisaacdrums @vinylrecords It’s a great set. May be the only known recording of the band with Sonny Landreth.

Hey heads, are there still just the same two versions of Foot Of Pride (plus Lou) out there? Going thru my occasional obsession with that deranged masterpiece

Superleopold,
@Superleopold@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely There are three versions (all different than the one on the initial Bootleg Series album) on the Springtime in New York box set. Two early versions labeled “Too Late” and then another listed as Foot of Pride.

I’ve had Sonos for 6-7 years now, and moving music between rooms so I don’t have to stop listening still makes me a little giddy.

Superleopold,
@Superleopold@heads.social avatar

@pdkcooks @fogelnet @chopaganda I have had Sonos for 12 years and I run three sets of speakers in different rooms and one portable speaker. The system has worked great and the support staff was very committed to helping with the one big problem I had with a software update and a drive connected to my router. The only problem that I don’t like, but have learned to live with, is the limit of 65,000 songs. It seems like a lot, but if you have a lot of live music it can fill up quick.

Superleopold,
@Superleopold@heads.social avatar

@fogelnet @pdkcooks @chopaganda For many years I just had a usb drive attached to my router. Suddenly at the end of 2022 they did an update and didn’t work anymore. After long discussions with a compassionate tech engineer at Sonos we identified that I could use a NAS drive. Sonos sent me one for free. No problems since.

Just in from High Moon Records: "We are very excited about our upcoming series of archival live recordings recorded at the historic San Francisco venues The Matrix and the Avalon Ballroom, culled from the tape archives of live recordings made by Peter Abram and Bob Cohen who ran sound at the venues. We look to shine a light on the full spectrum of live music being performed in San Francisco, including a special release of the legendary blues musicians who graced the stage at the Matrix. "

G'mar chatima tova! May you be sealed in the Book of Life.

This was our semi-Jewish meal to celebrate the New Year: Crispy duck confit (which I did not make), with tzimmes made from sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, prunes, a Walla Walla onion, honey, and orange zest. My first homemade tzimmes ever. It was amazing with the duck. Love and life to all of you.

hey @FateMusic & @InstituteJerry, should there be an entry for in jerrybase, private soundcheck on 4/12/93? mcnally's book says that bennett's son was a deadhead & he met backstage a few times. it mentions they said hello to one another at candlestick park in '93, but sure looks like they're singing here.
