Geek, Sys Admin, Cloud Architect, Opinionated. My first PC was a Commodore Vic 20, I have been using Linux since 1996, and on the net since it was called the ARPANET, but I am not as old as all of that would imply. I just started very young.

Every effing time I use a yml file I have problems. I just about abandoned a docker thing I'm working on because it wasn't working. No errors or anything this time.

The problem ended up being, as you all know, those effing spaces. For fuck's sake.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Yes, when using a format defined by whitespace, it is actually important to get the spacing correct. It is still more readable than JSON that litters curly braces everywhere.

May be going to Jellyfin instead of Plex. I cannot for the life of me get it to see all of my TV show files. It seems most, but leaves whole or complete seasons out, despite there being the correct metadata for those shows attached.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast using Plex instead of Jellyfin is like using OpenOffice instead of LibreOffice, MySQL instead of MariaDB, ownCloud instead of Nextcloud, or CentOS Stream instead of AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux. Sometimes a project shits itself and you have to move on to the community's rescued version.

My wife unironically asked my eldest last night what he wanted for "first" dinner. I feel like we're raising hobbits.

@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike So if my meal schedule is as follows, are you calling me a Hobbit too?

Breakfast - 7 a.m.
Second Breakfast - 9 a.m.
Elevenses - 11 a.m.
Luncheon - 1 p.m.
Afternoon Tea - 3 p.m.
Dinner - 6 p.m.
Supper - 9 p.m.

I'm not really that rigid though, sometimes there is snacking too. Ok, most of the time there is snacking.

@thelinuxcast now check out LCX containers. So much nicer than Docker, because like a VM, they are persistent. Typically if what I need is small, and single use, I will use an Alpine Linux container rather than a VM.

Finding a good tutorial on YouTube to learn how to use docker is like pulling teeth. They all have prerequisites, which means you either have to go learn about those first or just find something different. Has nobody learned to assume their viewers know nothing? Hello, does noob ring a bell?

@frameworkcomputer as a professional web host, it felt like I waited forever for CloudLinux 9. Otherwise I am pretty happy using current versions and don't typically upgrade as soon as new versions of a distro become available.

@gamingonlinux is it as bad of a PC port as Zero Dawn was? Love the games on PlayStation, but I found Zero Dawn unplayable on my PC. Wasted good money on it.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@eldamir at the time I was still on Windows, so you couldn't blame it on Proton. It just ran very poorly. Halting and stalling frequently, crashing out of the game, and never having that smooth feel that it did on PS4. You also lost that satisfying haptic feedback when you drew the bow, held the tension, and released.

I wasn't alone in this either. When I went looking for solutions others reported the same. After months of trying the consensus was that it was just a really bad port.

Back on Hyprland for now. Needed a break from Plasma. If I stay on Hyprland, I will transfer plasma over to my standing desk and laptop so I can continue my review.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast
You know I liked the look of Garuda Linux, but I just could not get into Plasma. Also being an Arch based Linux there were just too many things that didn't work right out of the box, some if them I found near impossible to fix. So I went back to Linux Mint with Cinnamon, and I just borrowed the assets from my Garuda install, and tweaked my Cinnamon to look like Garuda, but with a more traditional lower left menu and taskbar.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I know KDE likes to let on how customizable Plasma is, and many drink the KoolAid on that, but I think you are right. There are many things I have come up against that I just can't do with Plasma. It throws up issues with scroll bars, keyboard bindings, etc. It certainly isn't anywhere near as customizable as Enlightenment was in 1998. With over 25 years to improve on that desktop, you would think we would be further along.

I cannot for the life of me get Jellyfin to work. It just cannot find ffmpeg on my system, despite pointing it directly at the binary in the startup script.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I typically install natively on Linux, no Flatpak or container, and I have never had an issue. However, I feel your pain as I tried to move my Jellyfin install to an M1 Mac mini and it just doesn't want to work no matter what I try. I'm thinking on getting another computer just to move Jellyfin back to Linux. The old Linux host is no more.

According to Manly Man Brigade, "straws are for women and children".

So it's "unmanly" for me to use a straw to drink from a glass, like I've done at a restaurant forever.

It's ridiculous. "Unmanly" to eat ice cream cone in public or to use a straw in public. These "rules" are obviously made up.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@yakkoj The people who come up with those rules are obviously insecure in their own manhood. So in my book, they should be ignored.

@thelinuxcast I just purchased 3 identical SuperMicro servers, each with dual Xeon 14 core, 28 thread CPUs, 64GB memory, and a dozen 6 TB SAS drives. I built a fully hyperconverged ProxMox cluster with HA. The servers were under $1000 each. You would be amazed at the still very good computing power you can get from eBay if you know how to look and don't mind buying something that is 3-5 years old.

T313C0mun1s7,
@T313C0mun1s7@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast using a Kill a Watt the most power draw I was ever able to measure was 340 watts on a single server for about 30 seconds while the fans were all clearing at full speed and all the drives were spinning up and initializing. While running they are typically drawing about 212-220 watts. This is on 120v power, and they would be more efficient on 240v power.

You would want to put them in a room that can exhaust the heat and where there is something between you to dampen the fan sound.

You know what I’d love? A domain registrar that allows me to pay in pounds sterling (£). Instead, I have to pay in USD ($) and for every transaction, I see this shit on my bank statement.

Can any of my fellow brits recommend a decent registrar that allows me to pay in £, that doesn’t cost the earth?

@kev Been using Joker.com for nearly 20 years despite being in the US. They are German and normally deal in Euro but translate everything to USD for us. Maybe they also support the Stirling Pound. I make pretty heavy use of their API and have thousands of domains with them. The few times I have needed to use support they have been excellent.

@gamingonlinux Don't go making promises you can't keep. You only know the current state of affairs. You don't know what the next decade holds. AI is absolutely in its infantcy, we can only guess at what the future holds, and likely our imagination is not good enough to guess right.
