"... that nobody asked for"

I mean. pinches brow I know what this is supposed to mean, but.

Look. Nobody asked for antibiotics either. Nobody knew they existed, that such a thing even COULD exist. It was a lab accident, it turned out to be amazing, they developed it, productized it, and saved billions of lives. Same for the semiconductor transistor. Nobody was asking for them, what people actually wanted was better vacuum tubes that were smaller, used less power, lasted longer.

"...that nobody asked for" is a nice catchy phrase that really made a certain point very clearly and succinctly. It has punch. It works. And unfortunately human beings are generally extremely unimaginative in our use of language - it's much, MUCH easier to just pull out stock phrases, repeat cliches, copy the good bits from that article we read. Which is fine, that's honestly just how language works in practice, it's just another of the many shortcuts our brains need to get their jobs done, but like...

I mean, sometimes we should actually think about that stock phrase we're about to use, check if it actually fits or makes sense? If you're putting it into words and publishing it somewhere, maybe it would be best if you put more effort into writing it than your reader put into reading?

@uastronomer how dare you suggest we learn about our own mother language. 🤣

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@uastronomer some overused phrases can be quite useful in certain situations. However, I do wish people would more often do the academic legwork to learn the real context of these phrases before using them. Language does evolve and things can take on new meanings, but I’ve always believed that learning the history of something helps immensely with expression & clarified context.

So, GM is killing the Chevy Bolt later this year. A lotta folks are upset about that, but as someone who knows a lot about the car and how it fits into the broader EV landscape, I'm not actually too bothered by this news.

There's a /different/ bit of news from GM that I'm much more upset about but honestly the Bolt's time has come.

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@msprout @TechConnectify battery packs are not just big bricks. They’ve got high voltage cabling, coolant lines/ducting & road grime is a real thing that can & does get into everything & in some areas cause corrosion. They’re also damn heavy. Then there’s the risk of damage to battery packs not attached to the vehicle. Also we need to minimise the amount of excess landfill & lithium used, so a ton of extra battery packs floating around isn’t a great idea.

I definitely may just be another "overpromising techno-uptopian", but I'm sharing this article because I concur so strongly with the author - the benefits outweigh the risks of nuclear technology.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/04/nuclear-power-clean-energy-renewable-safe/

We have this scientific miracle and we push renewables instead as though they are a realistic solution like electric cars instead of transportation infrastructure. I don't think we use or appreciate how nuclear safety and how it’s relative benefits outweigh the risks because we have let ourselves be emotionally overwhelmed by history. Too fearful to consider the facts, willfully or woefully ignorant, and propagandized as to the true risks.

Even before we achieve fusion, which we will, nuclear power plants are a better way than renewables to not just save our planet but also build more robust and equitable economies.

"Strip away the fear and look at the facts, and we’d see that has always been relatively safe, while is very dangerous."

@Jdreben @Jdreben sustainable power. Wind does not “renew” that word is a fossil fuel lobby catchphrase.

TransitBiker,
@TransitBiker@urbanists.social avatar

@nuncio @Jdreben @Jdreben things like wind and pumped hydro, and a few other energy production methods that do not directly extract or emit are what I call “cyclical sustainable”. The power output is not constant, but it is also not at risk of being depleted. There are actually a whole bunch of technologies that fall into this category that have yet to be deployed on a commercial scale.

If you don't write AltText on your photos, we notice that too. Please give it a try. Imagine how you'd feel if you came across picture after picture that looks like a blank screen to you. You'd be frustrated, right?

@liztai I didn’t say “twitter is useless”. It must be replaced & an alternative found for that use as it has become a fascist hate speech conduit. Also - not all “Americans” are oblivious privileged idiots.
