I've seen that people are complaining about certain instances wanting to block out Facebook/Meta and that we should consider the "normal users" and embrace the possibility of mainstream adoption.

We have considered this and decided that certain demographics have decades of experience of being abused and harassed by Mainstream, Normal Users and having a safe haven away from that is more important than allowing Johnnie Randomnumbers to have the ability to debate their existence at them.

It’s super privileged to tell people to “simply stop using Twitter.” People who rely on mutual aid can’t do that here due to much smaller reach (and sometimes even server rules). People have life-saving community on Twitter that doesn’t exist elsewhere.

Ever try sharing a Mastodon link to someone who isn’t a user? It’s a garbage experience and if you run a business or something Mastodon is not the place.

Stop putting the onus on marginalized people to make your platform succeed, that’s a garbage take!!!!!

@shantini you might be expecting way too much of Mastodon. I too expected “Twitter but open source and federated” when I came here, but looks and description can be deceiving. The culture here is a lot different- probably because there’s no inflammatory algorithm. Folks don’t tend to go on 20 thread deep tirades, start huge political fights, or do “mutual aid sharing.” I know people rely on it, but I think a lot of people get annoyed by mutual aid and fundraising, as horrid as that sounds.

Friends, we have preemptively blocked all FB related domains, and will continue to do so.

It is looking increasingly likely we will need to do the same with endpoints that are choosing to federate with them.

I know this is going to cause some people to build alts, and likely cause some people to leave.

Know that I do not take this choice lightly, and for any disruptions caused, I hope you understand this is not about making the town a less inviting place for you.

    i can’t even find the thing anymore that i used to use for my static blog. i don’t remember what it was called. maybe noblog or something? at any rate it doesn’t seem to exist anymore and i am very sad because now i have to mess around with shit that i don’t understand and that doesn’t work and i hate it

    Fighting with TypeScript is so exhausting. My tasks take easily 50-75% longer, and it's so much easier to get sidetracked making TS happy to the point of forgetting what I was aiming to do 😫

    Is the big secret in tech that this happens even to the aficionados and they just pretend it's fine?

    The standard American diet is generally terrible and I’m trying to pull in ideas from other cuisines to make healthier foods. I’m not the best cook. Suggestions of new foods to make always welcome! I do like the middle eastern tendency to make “salads” as chopped vegetables as opposed to some nasty lettuce and croutons.

    @skykiss The reason is because Americans as a people fall more and more into despair, and whatever said investment you mentioned likely isn't going to directly benefit the citizen as the end recipient in a meaningful way. Americans need a free public healthcare system, investments in infrastructure, free post secondary training, and a list of other things which they are just not getting regardless of who they vote for. People have just given up hope.

    @RadicalGraffiti Honestly, I don't even see what the point of using air BNB's are in most cases. I've only been in a few and they've always been absolutely disgusting. It usually makes sense to just stay in a hotel 9 times out of 10.

    I have closed my public instance, finecity.social, binned my account there and moved back to mastodon.social. My bots will keep running on calckey.bloonface.com but I won't use that site for anything else any more.

    I have fallen out of love with and in a big way, I don't intend to use it much any more. The past couple of weeks has crystallised that this isn't really a platform I like much.

    @Bloonface I'll admit, I came in November and then stopped, and then decided to come back. I didn't know what my expectations should be, without a doubt. The problem is people are used to wildly inflammatory, addictive, and mysterious algorithms. There's none of that in the . It's a breath of fresh air.

    Federation with (via ) is getting closer.

    The sandbox environment has now been launched, which means you can set up your own AT protocol-enabled server.

    It's possible that Bluesky will finally start federating by the end of summer. However, knowing how most dev teams work, this launch is not a certainty. It always takes time to iron out bugs.

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews I’m in Bluesky, and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if the user base is unaware of the fact that it will be able to federate in the future: I think most of the user base sees it as a Twitter alternative, not thinking much about the tech, and probably more usable for those of them who had been part of the Nov 2022 but found Mastodon boring
