Often times, tools like Trusted Tester certifications are not enough to prove how usable a product is until you truly put it in front of real users who can assess the validity of the software, services and platforms that companies are building. Please everyone, let's change the conversations when we are meeting with these companies. Are we buying into equal and equitable experiences with our purchases and how can we be assured of this? Transparency is crucial.

amir,

@JeffBishop Right. Name Google and their extremely limited and geo-restricted beta-testing for TalkBack.

Nice feature - finally! Notifying users of available add-on updates: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/pull/16636

Could somebody please give me the politest way to tell the person who is asking me for a version of talkback that does not exist to take a hike off the nearest cliff?

amir,

@evilcookies98 Just tell them that you have switched to iOS - LOL!

Well, the post I just read has deterred me from ever installing a custom ROM on any android device ever.

amir,

@evilcookies98 Honestly it's not recommended unless your phone no longer receives updates from the manufacturer.

amir,

@evilcookies98 LOL - that's the case of a very evil ROM! But most of them aren't like that. And why should we install a custom ROM when we receive Android updates, both major and security ones, on a regular basis?

amir,

@evilcookies98 I see - smile. I suggest doing it with a device which is no longer getting updates. That way you won't feel sorry for any type of bricking, loss of speech, absence of accessibility services, etc.

sadly you can't copy the description from the desktop version of be my eyes to the clipboard, so that you can paste it somewhere. at least I haven't found a way with JFW. I even tried the virtual viewer, and in there you can't even see the responce.

amir,

@JamminJerry Rather disappointing especially with larger text blocks displaying comparisons or some sort of analysis.

amir,

@JamminJerry LOL - really funny.

amir,

@JamminJerry Maybe it doesn't like disposables - LOL!

Fact: Regardless of the operating system used and despite the claims made, Be My AI hasn't yet switched to the new GPT-4O platform. For instance, when asked, Be My AI says that based on its latest update, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra hasn't been released. However, when accessed on the web and on the Chat GPT website which is based on GPT-4O, it can process questions about S24 Ultra.

We've launched chat filters for WhatsApp! You can now sort your inbox to show all your conversations, group chats only, or unreads only. https://blog.whatsapp.com/find-messages-faster-with-chat-filters

amir,

@objectinspace But we want TalkBack actions for WhatsApp on Android more than anything else! 😀😀

Shocking news today that Dictionary.com has laid off all its lexicographers.

I already had a line in next week's podcast about dictionaries being a tough industry, and now it's even more true.

Some great company should hire them all; they're a real dream team

Check out @korystamper, @grantbarrett, John Kelly and more.

They're posting at LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/john-kelly-content_dictionarycom-meanings-definitions-of-activity-7184630769942695936-r6Vr?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

amir,

@grammargirl @grantbarrett Absolutely shocking and depressing! So will this effectively spell the end of Dictionary.com, like what happened to the American Heritage Dictionary? And if this happens, will Merriam-Webster remain the only living American English dictionary?

So, folks, CloudVision V3.2.0.1 for NVDA, which was released few minutes ago, fixes the Be My AI recognition issue. https://github.com/alekssamos/cloudvision/releases/tag/v3.2.0.1

Is this authentic or more of an April Fool's Day joke? V3.2.0 of the CloudVision add-on for NVDA claims to offer access to Be My AI! It even offers a check box for it in its settings window, a check box which is checked by default. But no further explanation is provided. https://github.com/alekssamos/cloudvision/releases

  • amir,

@objectinspace At least take little comfort by the fact that you can beta-test the thing. Most of us, geo-restricted or G-restricted, Google style, have no access to betas despite all the talk and the facade of positivity.

    amir,

@objectinspace It absolutely sucks! And that's why I wrote the following article a week ago - something should really be done: https://accessibleandroid.com/android-accessibility-a-blueprint-for-google-in-spring-2024-and-beyond-in-10-items

    amir,

@objectinspace Yeah - very strange and equally problematic! Just hope US TalkBack beta testers can do something about it as, with Google, we're not apparently heard.

    amir,

@objectinspace And regarding offline image descriptions my point was that if both require offline data, how is it that VoiceOver's descriptions are much more accurate? If Apple can do it offline so accurately, Google can do the same thing if they want.

    amir,

@dhamlinmusic @objectinspace Well, it's doable only if you are in the USA, the UK, or at most one or 2 other countries. So residents of just 3 or 4 countries can beta-test TalkBack. This is really discriminatory, and equally offensive coming from Google.

@NVAccess I've no doubt said this before, but what I think NVDA is missing is a feature similar to JAWS' Speech and Sounds Manager where you can change how you're notified for things like font attributes, links and such like.
Rather than it saying e.g. italic, you could set it up to play a sound, or change the rate slightly, whatever you fancied.
I believe the speech refactor was going to help add this kind of thing. So has there been anything done about this? I appreciate that it's probably not a high priority feature but it would be nice.

    amir,

@KaraLG84 @NVAccess Actually nothing to be exact. 😀

OSARA accessibility plug-in for Reaper can now automatically check for updates.
OSARA will check for an update when REAPER starts if it hasn't checked within the last 24 hours.
You can also manually check for updates using the action: OSARA: Check for update.
If an update is available, the dialog will show the commit log since you last updated.
OSARA can't download and install the update, so it provides a button to go directly to the download page.

Surprise! My post about the Italian electronic library called Fondazione Ezio Galiano has received tens of boosts - a record-breaker for my entire Mastodon life! But no one has contacted me yet regarding the library itself. So any Fondazione Ezio Galiano members out there? This is a shout-out to visually impaired Mastofolks mostly in Italy.

    amir, to random

Folks, do you happen to have access to the Italian library for the blind called Fondazione Ezio Galiano? If so, please kindly contact me. Also please boost this. Thanks.

@objectinspace 2/2. Speaking of accessibility, any chance of also providing feedback for accessibility issues with Instagram for Android? Apart from the missing TalkBack actions, currently double-tapping on stories doesn't activate the currently focused stories. It works maybe for the first story if you are fast enough, but double-tapping on other stories with TalkBack does nothing at all.

    amir,

@objectinspace Also thanks for this. With the status quo, Instagram stories on Android remain almost inaccessible as opening them which usually involves a double-tap is not possible.
