Interesting… I totally expected the Ubuntu and the RPiOS/Debian to run about the same on the , with only differences in configuration, available packages etc.… but the Debian seems to run noticeably faster, like up to 30% in some things 🤔 So I'll have to keep the Debian I guess.

@mackuba Doesn't surprise me at all. I have run ubuntu a few times on Pi4 and was totally underwhelmed by the performance. So glad I'm not ubuntu-crippled 🤪

@mackuba I ran Ubuntu Server on an NUC-10 for a while, and that was OK, but I dumped it in favor of Debian which felt even faster. Ubuntu seems to have a LOT more stuff that it enables by default. In contrast Debian enables very little by default. Curious to see your eval results.

@retiolus @atropos148 Unfortunately, the Pi5 requires Bookworm (Debian 12). Debian 11 (Bullseye) does not have the support for the new hardware on the Pi5.

maker question - I usually install the Lite version of the OS (that is, the CLI only, no desktop) because that feels lighter when I'm just running non-GUI apps. But does it make much of a difference to processor or RAM?

@jtruk It does make a difference, but not enough to deny yourself the wonders and features of a desktop if you like them.

Personally, I start with Lite and add a display manager (xdm) and window manager (icewm) to it. I can then cause it to boot to a graphical login or the CLI prompt quite easily.

My config is pretty lightweight, but if you run Gnome or KDE you'll find that they are a bit more resource hungry, but really depends on your wants/needs. LXDE also, but not as bad.

RasberryPi is running! 🥧

I got a bit nervous because it wasn’t responding at first. Turns out I had a loose connection on one of the fan pins. A jiggle or two later and bam!

Fan is annoyingly loud. Just a cheap fan, hoping I can resolve that.

Playing with the piOs tonight but will go headless on it and install PiHole soon.

@box464 I don't use a fan with any of my Pis. Well, one, but it's a case my son gave me 😆 . The rest are fanless. Why do you think you need a fan?

@box464 I hesitate to give you advice on something I can't see, but I can tell you that you probably don't need it unless your system is running hot (like over 70)

@box464 Yea, doubt that you'll need it, although a fan won't likely create a problem. I run a DHCP/DNS server on a Pi4 in a fanless case, it barely breaks a sweat. I didn't enable any bad-host blocking, but even with that (which pihole does, of course) the Pi4 would still run cool. Have fun!

@GottaLaff It will be interesting to see how many of these maroons flip to avoid jail and/or bankruptcy. If wasn't so stupid, he'd probably try to avoid that by helping them financially, but he's either a cheapskate or nearly broke 🤔
