Ah. 5:30 am in #Boulder and it's so lovely to wake up to the FTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT PBBBBBBRRRR FTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT PBBBBRRRRRR of yard sprinklers.
Special shout out to the apartment that has a sprinkler that just sprays the nearby shed with a high powered jet (power washer on plastic) and the neighbors who spray across their metal mailbox pole (high-pitched ringing every 10 seconds)

@Artemis201 At least they’re doing it at 5:30 in the morning when it’s cool out, not 2 in the afternoon when it just evaporates.

In the past two weeks, two people I know who were in their early 60s passed away from undiscovered heart problems. In both cases, they could have been detected early with a $200 heart scan.

Guys in your 50s: get your hearts scanned and save your family and friends a whole lot of pain and sorrow.

@Artemis201 We need to normalize going to the doctor for preventative care, especially for people who are young and fit, or formerly young and maybe not as fit as they used to be.

My old doctor was great about pestering me to come in for physicals; every birthday I'd get an email saying 'hey, come on in and let's chat'. And we would; a typical physical with him lasted at least 45 minutes, mostly sitting talking about stuff.

Yellowjackets: yea or nay? I was in the mood to watch something for a change, and Netflix recommended it. And I dig Juliette Lewis.

I don't watch many films or shows unless I find them exceptional because my ADHD tends to make me tune out. I don't even own a TV!

@RickiTarr @alexpsmith +1. Severance is messed up in all the right ways.

@Artemis201 I didn’t realize you’re a Whovian, though I guess it shouldn’t surprise me. What’s your take on the new Doctor?

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@Artemis201 Things kind of fell apart with Capaldi. Much as I liked him, the show just didn’t have the zing. Whitaker was better, but ditto. Gatwa has a good reboot feel to him. 2/4 episodes so far have big song and dance numbers which is fun.

At tonight’s #Scouting court of honor, our emeritus scout leader who’s been with the troop 40 years saw me wearing my Inclusive Scouting knot (knots are award patches for adults and they’re a bit more subtle than kids ranks).
“What does that knot mean?” he asked.
“It’s in memory of all the Scouts from previous generations who couldn’t participate because they were atheists or gay. It’s very much not official, but I wear it anyway”
“Oh, interesting”, he said.

@qurlyjoe @ai6yr It’s the unholy trinity of popular, near a lot of people, and technically difficult. A lot of people on that mountain shouldn’t be on that mountain. And definitely not in May! Just because it’s summer down here…

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@qurlyjoe @ai6yr Oh, I know. Fortunately the hard parts (which are dangerous even when they’re not “technical”) are pretty far from the trailhead and that tends to weed out most of the gapers. Still, I’m guilty of at least one that-was-dumb on that mountain in my early days as a mountaineer. Fortunately we didn’t have an issue besides being very very late for our post-climb rendezvous.

Something people in the knowledge industry (probably all industries) rarely talk about is the importance of proximity to nature in our workplaces. If I’m stuck on a problem or just need to get away from the computer and think about things, it’s great to be able to wander around this small pond nestled amidst highways and office parks. It’s hardly wilderness, but it’s an island of relative quiet and calm and my work is much better for it.

The ducks seem to like it too.

This might make it a little easier to burn the candle at both ends, but do you have anything with any more ends to burn? Like four? Or seven? Asking for a friend who is me.

c_dan4th,

@Artemis201 Here we go. That should be enough ends to burn this candle on.

Someone, maybe the campus operator, mistook "meteorite" for "media relations" and transferred a call to me from a woman who wanted to talk to someone about a meteorite.

Usually a call like that means trouble because it's going to be someone who wants to tell someone they saw a light in the sky and they think it opened their brain waves to new frequencies or something.

This time though, it was a legitimate inquiry, and the woman said she has a large iron-nickel meteorite she wants to donate to the school. Pretty cool.

@MLE_online I’d rather talk to possibly-crazy-space-rock people than people who want university communications on most days.

Does anybody know if there’s a traditional composite material that behaves something like fibreglass? As in fibre/fabric laid up in a binder of some sort to make a stiff material in arbitrary forms.

Paper mache is one but it’s too weak (I think, maybe there's a super version?). I'm considering things like cotton or flax in casein glue or pine resin... but I doubt it will work.

(And my last casein glue experiment stunk like rotten milk for weeks!)

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@john Canoes used to be made with wood frames wrapped with a canvas layer. I believe there was a binder as well.

Every April for the past few years I’ve undertaken a project I call Operation Active April: get out and do 30+ minutes of aerobic activity every day for a month (mostly bike rides, , and runs). This is the first year I’ve actually seen it through for all 30 days despite [challenges].

Friends, I’m tired. But I also feel fantastic and a little proud. I went from barely being able to run 5 km to being able to do 10 km without much effort.
