I just had to put a post-it with "Gina H?u?ge" on my mailbox because even in 2024 FedEx still doesn't seem to be capable of handling UTF-8 properly, based on the "your package is going to be delivered today" mail I just got...

@foosel My dad would often get an L substituted for the C in our last name. So, we’d get mail for The Hulk. My dad’s a large guy, but he’s not green! 😂

For everyone that complains about , I’ve literally had SolidWorks randomly crash twice today while trying to add a new drawing sheet. This isn’t some edge case task. Just because we pay thousand of dollars a year for this software doesn’t automatically mean it’s so much better.

This morning, I was watching a video about a very technical subject, and the presenter mentioned several times that they wanted to keep the design “simple” or “as simple as possible” without explaining what that meant.

I find this to be a big problem in . People always tell us to “just make it simple”. My first question is always “Simple for whom?”

I can make something easy to manufacture but hard to use and vice-versa. There is no universal “simple”, just trade offs.

I've got 19 more parts to print on this big project. I know how much filament each part uses, and I want to avoid middle-of-the-night spool swaps if one runs out mid-print. I opted to use a cut list optimizer to plan what prints I can get out of the fewest full spools with minimal leftover.

Enter: www.cutlistoptimizer.com

Enter weights (in grams) instead of length, and get a map of which prints on which spool. Brilliant!

I would love for the dipshits at Warner Brothers/Discovery+ to explain how shutting down a successful service that LOTS of people pay for is a good move. Explain it to me like I’m 5.

The statement “The media landscape has changed.” is such a nothing, business-douchebag sentence.

Gutted for the people at GCN+ because their race coverage was unparalleled. It will be missed.

Drop-In Time toots! I made a few little social media posts (thanks Canva!) about the fact that drop-in time exists and it was busy today.

First: a pregame request to track down a fiendishly expensive textbook in a... less expensive form. It's in the 15th edition and I could find the 14th. I respect the rights of authors to make money off of their work but the "No you have to have this edition and we print a new one every year" textbook scene is a racket. Could I find it? Of course I could.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@jessamyn All of this is so great. I love hearing stories of people helping others with technology, even when it’s frustrating for all involved, because there are so many moments of delight that can also happen like the Excel 2003 example. Things a lot of us take for granted are so often the key to opening up people’s worlds for the better.

@shom @grimalkina It drives me bananas how so many Linux users constantly hop distros and constantly complain about really esoteric problems with software that a majority of users would never want to use. Their machines are in constant flux and most problems are self-inflicted. Then, they criticize users of Ubuntu or Linux Mint because there’s too much stability? 🙄🤦‍♂️

I just cleared the first level of my first run of 🥳

Having a lot of fun crawling the dungeon and drawing the map, and am starting to get creative (it IS a solo RPG after all!). After I found the third bucket I decided, enough is enough, returned to the Blacksmith I had found and turned one of them into a helmet. All that noise of course triggered a patrol of a guard and their guard dog, but thankfully I rolled well ^^

Really fun game, can recommend!

So, I sold an antique tube amplifier on Audiogon, which is a pretty decent used-audio-gear marketplace. Shipped via Fedex. Fedex destroyed it. Huge hole ripped in the side of the high-quality original shipping materials. Claims denied. No recourse offered.

Anyone got experience with a situation like this? I am angry enough to be willing to pay a lawyer.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@timbray We shipped a few thousand dollars worth of machined parts via FedEx to our corporate headquarters to get laser etched. Brand new box and 2-day shipping. When the box arrived, there was a big hole in it and only one of the parts we shipped remained.

They blame our packing job and there is no recourse. As a company, we likely spend millions of dollars on shipping with them every year. I never choose FedEx for anything I ship personally.

trying to wrap my head around the guy in front of me in the airport TSA Pre line who had no idea giant plastic bottles of water you bought at the store weren’t allowed through security.

The rule has been in place for what, 23 years? How did he even end up in the TSA Pre line?

Just as the new KP.2 covid variant takes off in the US, North Carolina sends anti-masking legislation through the legislature and passes at least one chamber. We have some immoral legislators.

North Carolina gets some things quite right, but this is not one of them. 😬

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj It’s almost like that if they acknowledge that you shouldn’t expect to be cited, they could actually make that law?

A dubious idea I have about cutting curved dovetails so a box would look like an impossible dovetail box, but would in fact have the top open on an arc rather than a diagonal slide like most impossible dovetails.
The axis of rotation is the left corner, where there's a green line.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj @smellsofbikes You guys are going to make me take this on tomorrow. I feel like I need to have this on my desk at work to have some fun with our machinists.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj @smellsofbikes Oh, I would just 3D print it. Even with the equipment we have at work, I think it would be a tough sell with the shop manager we have to let me machine such an item. It’s hard enough getting him to make the parts I need for actual work stuff. 🙄

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj @kbob @smellsofbikes I was about 20 miles into a 60 mile ride today when I realized that figuring out the shape of the dovetail cutters is a simple projection of the final edge onto a plane that passes through the center of rotation. That’s if you want 45-degree dovetails that are equal on all sides. I thought it would be fun to have unequal angles to allow standard cutters, just to make the final result seem even more “impossible”.

When interviewing for a job 23 years ago, I was asked this same question by a panel of 7 people that were interviewing me through an interpreter.

It wasn’t at a coffee shop, but it still threw 24 year old me for a loop.
