This might controversial. I don’t like or use view models in the way I’ve seen iOS or macOS apps use them. I’m pretty much entirely resistant to any object which mostly exists to shuttle data around between other things.

I’m also increasingly against implementing things a certain way because a “thought leader” wrote it down that way at some point in the past.

I've been experiencing a persistent high heart rate and an increase in blood pressure this week, I think partially due to anxiety and stress. I'm just not feeling very well. If you've experienced this, what are some things you've done which made a real difference?

I've been going for walk as well as trying to stay hydrated and breathe, but it's been hard this week, both mentally and physically.

After the past eighteen months, I've come around on the idea that programmers should have a union. It won’t happen because there are too many weird libertarians and temporarily inconvenienced millionaires in tech, but in an ideal world, I think it would exist.

We've somehow convinced ourselves that we aren't labor, but we sure get treated like we are. Alternatively, the United States could have better labor laws, but that seems even more unlikely to happen.

Are all search engines bad now because they have all been SEO'd to death and it's impossible for the people making them to fix it or what? I would kill for a search engine that returned good results.

After having the Apple Studio Display for several months now, I feel about the same as I did when I got it. It's great, but the camera makes me look so bad that it's nearly useless. I'd buy it again, but I still can't believe what an own goal the camera was.

What terminal app are people using these days? I always go back to Terminal.app, because a lot of the others aren't very Mac like. Warp is cool, but I'm not sure it's for me. Maybe just iTerm?

Are some of these companies not actually hiring developers but keep the listings up for some reason?

I think when your editor starts taking 60 seconds to launch, there’s no clear way it can ever be fixed, and it hasn’t had a release in two years, that’s a pretty good indication it’s time to look at alternatives.

It’s a shame because TextMate had so much going for it if it had just kept up with the times. I really do get why people love it so much.

You know if you really want to hire someone to make you a Mac Assed Mac App, the guy who coined the term (me) is pretty good at that and frequently available 🤷‍♂️

I feel like I haven't marketed myself well enough haha.

When Europeans say Americans don't know geography, do they just mean we don't know European geography as well as they do? Like, would they do any better placing US states or countries in South America, Asia, or Africa than us? I feel like we tend to know the things that are relevant to our lives.

I think I’ve decided I don’t like take home projects for job interviews, even if they pay you. They don’t respect the interviewees time and there’s no communication.

An on-site usually takes like four hours, and after a combination of whiteboarding/coding/discussion, you’re done.

All of these companies doing take-home projects have like a four or five part process where they expect you to spend five to eight hours on each part.

It’s weird, but to my understanding implementing MVC as originally envisioned is easier with due to the whole obervables thing than it was with UIKit.

In MVC, the model was meant to notify the view of changes after the controller updated it, and funneling that both ways through the controller was always a variation.

Can anyone recommend me a data model visualizer that works with ? Ideally I can drop my schema.rb on it and get something that turns that into showing me all of the relationships and properties. If it was similar to this screenshot of the Core Data modeler, that would be awesome.

One thing if you've done martial arts for any amount of time is realizing how entirely helpless you are against someone who knows what they're doing.

And by helpless, I mean, you might not even touch, let alone hurt them.

I'm interested in learning a more functional martial art mostly for the fun and fitness aspects, but I'd be lying to say I'm not curious what it feels like to know you can really handle yourself.

3-5 years coding experience should not be called “senior.”

Edit: This was too broad a statement. It's definitely not something you can boil down to time one way or the other.

As far as I’ve heard, there’s no plans for to improve discovery, and I just don’t think hashtags are it, so that sucks. Discovery is a missing piece that I think is going to hold the platform back long term.

I'm not going to pay $6000 for an XDR, because I am extremely not rich, but I absolutely think having a 32" Apple monitor is probably pretty awesome. I guess I'll just continue slumming it over here with my $2000 Studio Display, like an animal.

Do I know anyone who does TDD in a pretty religious way? The benefits and reasons you would do TDD make sense to me abstractly, but figuring out the interfaces and whatnot without writing any code from the outside in is a little hard for me to get my my head around.

I think about this more than I should because I grew up going to Guitar Center and worked there in my early 20s.

If I were them, I would close all the stores in weird locations that don’t justify having a store like that, make the remaining ones premium flagship experiences with highly competent staff, and focus on online sales.

Change the whole thing. This hasn’t been working for like 20 years.

I know money can’t buy happiness or solve anxiety, but also if I had an amount of money to where I didn’t have to worry about ever going broke, I think I would be a lot less stressed and anxious.

According to the poll I did, 60% of my followers have definitely had COVID, 40% don't think they have, and a few people who replied weren't sure.

I haven't, and I think this is a pretty surprising result. I'd expect my followers are heavily on the side of taking COVID seriously, wearing masks, and being fully vaccinated. The fact that roughly two thirds of them have gotten it anyway is kind of wild to me.

This is nothing against the iPad, and only speaking for myself app, but I have never figured out where it fits in my life. It’s not enough better at anything than my phone to bother grabbing usually, and as soon as I want to do something more than browse the web or watch YouTube, I hit a wall and have to use my Macintosh.
