    Right I'm going to be slightly vague and long about this one. If you know about a specific thing on another server this week, that's the context. If you don't, this is generally true anyway.

    Today someone pulled me up on using "stupid" as it has ableist roots. I thanked them for it.

    Yeah, I did an etymology check first cus I'm not devoid of ego, but they were right, yeah it's not that kind a word, compared to eg: foolish or silly, which are behaviour-based.

    Now. I'm not ableist. I'm all the nice things I'm a great lad, by my own standards.

    But I didn't hear "you are ableist" because someone was actually saying "that word has ableist connotations". I didn't react defensively.

    Now, I'll probably slip up and use the word again, almost reflexively. I might even have my own ideas about how meaning changes.

    But I was sharing a space with people who wanted things tuned more sensitively. And I have the benefit of that space. 2/

    In a shared space, especially an officially safe one, we moderate our use of language. Even if we think it's ok elsewhere, we accept a "we don't do that here" from our peers.

    .ie is tuned more sensitively than some servers, and less than others. Variety is good.

    You can have a guns blazing "we're all being ironic" server.

    Someone else can have a "CW all food posts, to better support those with eating disorders" server.

    Play along like an adult, be grand.

    Thanks to a nice person here, I got a friend a Bluesky invitation code. He'd been wanting to look at it for a while.

    Came away unimpressed, the main thing that had stood out was the amount of furry porn.

    He thought less of Bluesky for it but tbh I had thought the furry porn crowd were too cool for Bluesky.

    Yo fellow parents of small children. Any of ye use Discord regularly? I find it bafflingly noisy, but then I only ever have a few mins here and there to check in, but it feels like something that would work ok if you had 30 mins at a time to hang out on it.
