It’s me. Hi! I’m the problem, it’s me. I contain multitudes: aspiring writer, amateur photographer, tech enthusiast, armchair sociologist, recovering alcoholic, Trekkie, squishy human. Too soft for all of it. 🇵🇭 born, 🇺🇸 made. Queer and proud.

Since I’m a MASSIVE fan, and this is toot 1,701 on my feed, a tribute to the U.S.S. Enterprise seems apropos.

But which Enterprise? I’m a 90s kid, so my very first was the Enterprise-D. In time, I came to know and love all of them. (Okay, maybe not the J. That one’s just weird.)

Fellow —which one is your fave?

I have a Brother MFC-L2740DW, one of their multifunction units. Best printer I’ve ever owned, simply because I hardly have to think about it. Whenever I need to print something, it prints it, and it almost never complains. Whenever I need to scan something, it scans it, and it almost never complains. The toner lasts for-fucking-ever. And I got it working with Windows, macOS, iOS, and several Linux distros.

Unless you need color, get a Brother B&W laser. They’re great.

I guess these night errands are a good time to field test iOS 17 and watchOS 10. Lots of new stuff in both, and I’ve only just scratched the surface!

From what I’ve experienced so far? Some of this new stuff isn’t exactly discoverable. The whole contact poster feature? Would’ve been nice if actually told you how to use the feature when they teased it on their website. (It’s in Contacts.app when you edit contacts, BTW.)

When I posted about OpenAI’s newest generative AI model yesterday, I said it was going after creatives. This is not wild speculation on my part.

Consider this. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman runs in the same circles as many Hollywood moguls. Case in point? Here’s who showed up at last year’s Sun Valley Conference in Utah. Yep, Altman was there. So was David Zaslav of WB-Discovery and Brian Grazer. Not pictured or mentioned here is Bob Iger of Disney, but he was definitely there.

As I look at the world around me, I keep asking myself, “How fucked do we have to be before we start turning things around?”

Then I think about . It’s often thought of as a utopian setting, more or less, which is true. But us , who are steeped in the lore, know that there’s a fair bit of dystopia in the Trek timeline. And that dystopia hits around… right now, actually.

And if you watched a particular two-parter in , well… yeaaaaaaaah.

Not gonna lie. I find this development deeply troubling. Many of us on , myself included, are concerned about the ethics surrounding generative AI. Nothing in this announcement—and nothing in the replies thus far—assuages our concerns.

I hope @nivenly clarifies where Haidra gets their training data, and whether or not it infringes on the copyrights of artists. The responses thus far have been less than encouraging. https://hachyderm.io/@nivenly/110793389840249184

Consider this your periodic reminder that Reagan thought having an educated populace was a bad thing, and that’s why higher education is so fucking expensive in the US.

It wasn’t always this way. We could—and should—demand better.

Look, . I’m a Microsoft 365 subscriber and a OneDrive user. I wouldn’t pay for it if I didn’t think it was good, or at the very least, a good value.

But you need to rein in this obnoxiousness. This sort of behavior is more likely to repel customers than attract them. And it makes people like me, people who are often consulted for their perspective on tech, less likely to recommend your products to others.

Seriously, knock it off. https://mastodon.social/@verge/111377292158910307

It’s been a while since I’ve posted some goodness. Time to fix that!

This is my 2020 13” MacBook Pro running System 7.1, thanks to Mini vMac. The environment is running at 640x400—the native resolution of the old 100-series PowerBooks. Much to my surprise and delight, this is a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it appears perfectly proportioned on this display.

And this isn’t a toy. I set up a PDF printer, and the PDFs can be passed to the host machine for viewing and printing!

I can’t get over how Elon Musk is a classic Bond villain at this point, with the most essential attributes: an implausible-sounding name, absurd wealth, megalomania, out-of-control narcissism, a loyal cadre of sycophant minions, the ability to launch shit into space, “utopian” visions that aren’t actually utopian, and a singular obsession with James Bond.

And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a secret volcano lair too.

One of the hardest things about my current situation is resisting the temptation to drink. Before, alcohol was my go-to coping mechanism for emotional distress. And honestly, a part of me wants to drink myself into oblivion.

But I’m three months shy of being five years , and I’ve worked too hard and too long to forsake that. The crazy part is, I did that on my own! Well, not entirely on my own, but I’m not part of AA or anything like that.

Y’all, I’m not doing so great.

Most of my life, I’ve been encouraged to be generous in spirit. And so I give and I give and I give—and yet, I get so little in return.

I’m not talking about money. I’m talking about emotional support. I’m constantly checking in with people, supporting them in their endeavors, doing anything and everything I can.

But when I’m the one hurting? Not a soul in sight.

I’m tired, y’all. More than that, I’m angry. I deserve better than this.

Please allow me to bless your timeline with images of historic homophobe Anita Bryant getting hit in the face with a pie, courtesy of gay activist Tom Higgins.

This happened on this day, 14 October, 46 years ago. Feels like we’ve barely budged since then.

Maybe we need more pies in the faces of more bigots? Seems easy enough. Plenty of them to go around!
