Quick FOSS legal literacy quiz

Imagine the following situation: your project is MIT licensed. Someone takes the whole project and white-labels it (changes the name), then sells it commercially without providing the source code or sharing any of the sales revenue with you. They include "Copyright <your name>" and a copy of the MIT license in the "about" page of the software.

Is this allowed?

I demand that Linux remains exactly the same forever and all volunteer labor to maintain it goes into maintaining legacy software rather than making any new innovations. No, I am not volunteering any of MY labor for that purpose, but thanks for asking.

The story of Wayland:

  1. No one wanted to maintain X11 because it sucked
  2. We made Wayland and it's much better
  3. A vocal minority of change-averse people complained with little to no factual basis
  4. They were asked to muster some labor to maintain X11
  5. None of them did
  6. All of the people who actually do get work done eventually stopped listening to them and moved on with Wayland

Why is it okay to exclude the far right from your communities while welcoming the far left?

Well, to summarize it as succinctly as possible, the far left basically wants to rebuild the economic system and the far right wants to kill all of the Jews.

If you're asked to sign a CLA and/or copyright assignment before contributing to a FOSS project, refuse, and make a hard fork of the project instead.

Take direct action for free software.

At this point I recommend that you stay well away from this community and I do not have faith in its ability to improve.

Hot take: video games have peaked in terms of resource requirements and there's not much need to keep making better and better GPUs etc. Hardware has been more than enough for several years now

"Copyleft is less free than permissive licenses because permissive licenses allow you to make proprietary forks of free software" is a worldview that just straight-up makes no sense at all

Between 2017 and 2018 I developed and implemented the necessary Wayland protocols to support screensavers. It has been possible now for 5 years. The fact that GNOME and KDE don't support them is a critique of GNOME and KDE, not of Wayland, and it's ridiculous to spin it the other way around.

Number of Wayland compositors with support for screensavers: at least 40

Number that don't: 2

Get your fucking facts right.

Someone responsible for enforcing the code of conduct in a project reaches out to you to discuss your behavior.

Do you (1) listen to them in earnest, ask questions if things are unclear, and take the opportunity for introspection and improvement, or (2) interpret everything they said as a threat, immediately escalate it into an argument, and characterize the email as a harassment campaign targeted against you and endorsed by the employer of the conduct enforcement person?

🤦‍♂️

A question I'm getting a lot is "how do I enforce my code of conduct properly"

So I'm working on a handbook that provides a basic framework of conduct enforcement that can be forked and adapted to your community's needs

Is this something that you or your community would find valuable?
