The story of Wayland:

  1. No one wanted to maintain X11 because it sucked
  2. We made Wayland and it's much better
  3. A vocal minority of change-averse people complained with little to no factual basis
  4. They were asked to muster some labor to maintain X11
  5. None of them did
  6. All of the people who actually do get work done eventually stopped listening to them and moved on with Wayland

Quick FOSS legal literacy quiz

Imagine the following situation: your project is MIT licensed. Someone takes the whole project and white-labels it (changes the name), then sells it commercially without providing the source code or sharing any of the sales revenue with you. They include "Copyright <your name>" and a copy of the MIT license in the "about" page of the software.

Is this allowed?

You're a web developer. You use "npm install" to install 500 or so dependencies from npm, then use webpack to combine all of the modules into one minified javascript bundle and stick it on your website.

Are you compliant with the software licenses of your dependencies in any way whatsoever?

I have established a small, invite-only community on IRC focused on men supporting men. If you are a man and you need a safe space to work on positive masculinity, to better understand LGBTQ identities, feminist ideas, sexual harassment, and so on, this may be a safe space for you to grow with the help of other men, free of judgement. Please reach out to me in private if you wish to discuss being a part of this community.

I wanted to know how the setpgid syscall was implemented on Linux, and it turns out that the author of this syscall implementation also wanted to know how setpgid worked, in 1991

A question that is of interest today is "should a code of conduct apply outside of its borders?" In other words, can a project hold someone accountable for their behavior outside of that project's spaces?

The short answer is "yes". The long answer is "we live in a society".

"AI will revolutionize medicine and education"

Human doctors and teachers do better. The estimated market cap for the AI industry is 136.55B USD and, if that were invested directly into these fields, we could use the same money to train ~600,000 doctors or >1M teachers

Latest move from Crunchyroll/Funimation is a good reminder that piracy is morally justified (closed the Funimation catalogue, merged into Crunchyroll, abandoned licenses and revoked user access to "owned" content, and doubled the pricing)

Remember kids, copying isn't theft

Takings someone's money, telling them they "own" a digital asset, then removing it from their computer when your license agreement expires is theft!
