I am looking for statistics about the mental health state of IT workers, even better mobile / iOS devs. I'd love the stats to be recent.

Are people coping well with all the layoffs? Is the rate of anxiety disorders and/or depression up? Has the situation changed with the back and forth remote/RTO mess?

But really, anything in this realm would be great. Thank you!

Boosts are welcome

#Ottawa #Marathon is in 8 days! I feel ready, but I'm still worried.
I'm not sure my taper is long enough. I feel the accumulated fatigue still.
I'm really not heat-adapted yet (way too early in the season). I hope it's not going to be suddenly 25/30°C...
I don't know if air quality will be affected by the fires (it looks possible)
Still... my fitness seems good enough!

Fundraising update
I mentioned a few weeks back that I'm participating in the SickKids Foundation #fundraising activity for May, called 1001 reasons to run. People have been really generous and I'm so grateful!

Update
724$ (goal is 1000$)
132km (goal is 215km)

If you have not done so yet, and want to / can do, 👉 https://www.millionreasons.run/fundraisers/francois-olivier-leblanc/mrr-24-fr. Funds go to the Children Hospitals in Canada.

Thank you to everyone who already gave, plan to do so, or wish they could but must pass this one.

It's a wellness day at work today! 🎉 I took advantage of it by doing my long run today instead of tomorrow. A nice 32km that brought me in Montreal's Old Port, historic Lachine canal, Mount-Royal and many nice neighborhoods.
This brings me to 97km so far in May, well align to my 215km goal for the SickKids Foundation fundraising.
If you can and wish to contribute, please do so here: https://www.millionreasons.run/s/44070/50014. The funds are given to research children hospitals in Canada. (1/2)

I know some of you have already donated: thank you so much!!
I also completed the morning with amazing sushis!

Really proud of my race today!! It's a PR on the half marathon distance for me, by 9 minutes!! I wanted to run consistently at 5 min/km and that's pretty much exactly what I did!

Weather was not optimal: about 10°C with rain and wind. Even strong head winds on the part of the course next to the river.

I'm refining my fueling strategy, that's also positive.

This gives me much more confidence for the upcoming Ottawa marathon.

Photo of the river taken from the first part of the course. It doesn't look as cold on the photo as I felt it did when I was there!

@fo Or, this is the optimal weather for running for you. 🤔

question:

Last night I had a cramp in my calf. (It never happens but me but it's the second one this week, weird) This morning I still have some minor pain.

Today is a rest day, but tomorrow I have a half marathon.

Is there anything I can do to prevent it getting worse? I'm thinking compression socks (done) and maybe cold bath?

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@fo I used to get the worst cramps in my calves. Then I started eating a banana a day with dessert and they don’t happen any more. In my case my potassium was probably low.

You could say in my case a banana a day keeps the cramps away. 🤣

Dear community of

I just registered to a fundraising challenge for May; I have set myself a goal of running 215km. While doing so, I'm hoping to raise 1000$ (CAD) for children hospitals in Canada.
The SickKids Foundation manages the fundraising and will give to your nearest children hospital (see the FAQ for details).

If you are in a position to do so, please consider contributing to my fundraising here: https://www.millionreasons.run/fundraisers/francois-olivier-leblanc.

Hahaha that one is easy! Are runners human? Yes, then avoid at all cost.

To be fair, the title is misleading. They also address gels we use on runs, which is a good question.

I love this quote (from the article linked in the previous toot):

No single food determines your health and wellbeing,” Skolnick says. “[Your] patterns, habits and choices over time are what impact [your] health.”

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@fo It's interesting; when I was doing my +50kms runs, I'd bring some water, a couple of apples, and a granola bar or two and didn't die.

<points to fact we're all different>

Human bodies are weird bags of mostly water. 🤣

Hahaha I finally decided on wearing shorts for today's run. Yes, my first time this year. Yes, I did regret it! Winds and rain were brutal!!
And now it snows?!? I can understand why I was cold! 🤣

But the good news is that my hip pain is already gone!

Precision: the actual location of the pain is hard to describe: it's in the hip region. It would not allow me to sit legs crossed, or mount a bike, but didn't really prevent me from running. Doesn't matter, it's gone!

@WTL @sebastianhahn Hahaha well now I am, but it doesn't count anymore, the temperatures allow for it.

@fo @sebastianhahn There are still runners out in pants. And tourists in winter coats. 🤣

#Ottawa #Marathon course just published: https://www.racepoint.ca/maps/orw.html?mapid=6

It is really different from previous years, where it would venture into Gatineau (Qc). I heard an interview where an organizer mentioned it was a source of pride: it was the only Canadian marathon to cross provincial borders.

Now it stays in Ottawa and there are 2 180° turns. I'm not sure I like it. Could be resistance to change, I had already started visualizing the old course...

Yeah no, I don't like 180° turns.

@WTL when I click on the link, yes, and it was the version I intended to share as well. The outlier is the thumbnail where it goes into Gatineau.

@fo Okay, cool. Still strange through. 🤷🏻

My perception of my running was all over the place this morning. Not after long, I decided to stop worrying about HR zones.
It occurred to me this morning that I might be fighting off a virus: my pace was also off last Thursday. I've been sneezing (only that) and thought it was allergies.

I also decided to change my route, as it was too windy for my taste today. So I left the river & climbed Mont-Royal instead.

I'm still proud of sticking to it and finish my 29km planned for today!

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@WTL thanks!
I usually don't care about weather but today I didn't want to fight incoming wind for a few kilometres.
I didn't check the gusts speed but that feels right! Especially in open areas like along the river!

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@fo I was out cycling and when I turned into it, wow, did I slow down!

@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

I will not lie, I'm done with winter. But winter is not done.
I usually embrace outdoor conditions, but today was a treadmill day. My first, and hopefully, my last of the year. This is not my cup of tea!!

Other sidewalk covered in snow. We see the bike sharing station in the background, which was installed yesterday!
A branch fell off on the sidewalk, because of the snow weight. Which is quite heavy.

fo,
@fo@thecanadian.social avatar

@WTL @BenjaminHan
Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣

Truth is, this is normal for the season. But because we haven't seen that much snow during real winter time, this stink. And yeah, there was a lot of damage to the trees. We even lost electricity for a few hours in late afternoon. So... brutal is not that far off??

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@fo @BenjaminHan It is normal. There’s a photo of me at three months old in a snow suit… in June. 🤣

Weather was all over the place for this morning's long run! Sometimes very windy, sometimes sunny... but hey! That's spring...
I was very happy to go on new paths this time! I went along the Lachine Canal from the Old Port for a few km.

Today is a company-wide (or department-wide? Who cares ) day off, so you know what it means!! Epic long run! 🎉

I went somewhere I was not familiar with, along side the St. Lawrence river. It was beautiful! And cold! When I started, it felt like -19C (-2.2F).

The first photo is at my "starting line". I'm still in the city! That's crazy.

What a joy to do long runs.

Artistic installations in a parc. It's a metallic structure holding big rocks in the shape of a bottom leg and a feet. There's on in the foreground, but we see more in the background. They are between a path and the river.
