I spent much of yesterday moving a large collection of books that were destined for a dumpster. Because the local public library is in transition to a new building, the Friends had no place to put them, but a local coffee shop owner stepped up to move them all to her business. So starting tomorrow, everyone who goes in for a coffee or a donut or a cinnamon roll or lunch will also be able to take as many free books as they want.

See how bird populations are declining.

An interactive tracing the decline and fall of North America’s bird population — a staggering loss of 3 billion breeding adults, or nearly 30 percent of the population, in just a half century.

Tips for the cold:

Tack old blankets over the windows. You lose a lot of heat through windows.

I also saw someone say if your bookcases are on interior walls, you can increase insulation by moving your books against exterior walls.

We did the blanket thing when it was super hot, and it helped a bit.

@grammargirl Last year when the tax rebates became available for them, I put insulating blinds on all north- and west-facing windows. They are making a huge difference.

I bought this amaryllis back in November (for $5.00) so when it just sat there for weeks I figured it was a dud. And now, suddenly, it has put forth a spectacular bloom.

Meanwhile, over on Threads, people are worrying about the "cesspits" of Mastodon and wanting to be sure they can block all Mastodon users.

I always plant pansies in the fall by my doorstop, where I can see them as I am coming and going. They don't mind the cold and will keep cheerfully blooming all winter, until finally giving up in the heat of July.

"Now is the time to act if you want to keep a Google account you haven't used in a while.

Starting Dec. 1, Google will start deleting "inactive" accounts — that is, accounts that haven't been used in at least two years.

Google accounts give access to the company's other products, including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet, Calendar, Photos and YouTube.

That means emails, videos, photos, documents and any other content sitting in an inactive account are at risk."

Is there anyone out there who has access to the Dictionary of American Regional English and could check something for me?

@grammargirl I have the five main volumes right here beside my computer. What do you need to know?

gladsdotter,

@grammargirl They certainly do. With lots of examples. Definitely Ohio/Pennsylvania.
