I'm trying to start using an RSS app again. Can someone let me know if CalMatters has an RSS feed? So far, I'm unable to find it.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers That's the app I'm using, but I'd still need to find an RSS feed link for CalMatters to add it.

Fello hearing folks: If you're using something to auto-generate captions or a transcript, YOU NEED TO COPY EDIT IT.

Kudos to you for working on accessibility, but do not assume that automation is infallible. It's quite error-prone.

It can be even more frustrating to experience the relief of thinking you've found captions only to find they're mostly useless to you because they're full of garbage. It's like getting catfished. Please edit!

Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs

Sundar Pichai compared to Lord Farquaad as employees share memes about CEO pay.

Amazing how many people go straight to "Hey, TV writers make more than I do (so why should I support their strike)..." Even so-called left folks do this. You fall into the bosses' hands so easily!

(1) Money isn't the only issue a union might strike over and
(2) If you think TV writers "make too much", why don't you start with the big fry first and go after their bosses who make unimaginably larger amounts than even the most famous TV writer.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

(3) Just as people think the existence of megastar salaries means every TV/film actor is rich, you're thinking that every TV writer makes bank. That's not true. Both acting and writing are jobs where there's little security. Even if you make a good amount on something, it might have to last 3 yrs of being unemployed afterwards. And loads of folks never make "a good amount".

Every time you try to push others down instead of lifting us all up, you're playing into bosses' hands.

It's possible to acknowledge that many USians are too broke to do multiple news outlet subscriptions and also acknowledge that without $ coming in, journalism doesn't get produced - just reprinting press releases.

I hate it when people don't acknowledge that many journalists - esp freelancers - also are broke. They deserve to be paid well for their work as much as we do.

Critique should focus on those holding the reins to media monopolies, and their lieutenants.

I find it amusing, but sad, that they have to specify that cellophane is compostable. Real cellophane is made from cellulose plant fiber - it was always compostable.

It's only the plastic BS that marketers kept calling cellophane that isn't compostable.

Evacuation order for (checks date) will be lifted on May 1st. Only has been an evacuation zone since... 2011. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20230425_32/

@ai6yr That's the one that made me really rethink the emergency kits I already had. I'm still pretty darned imperfect, but better than I was.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Given tsunamis come about due to earthquakes, how were they able to figure a return rate? Wouldn't that mean earthquakes are predictable? Not trying to be a smart ass, just trying to understand here.

But I agree that if there's a long enough gap or a high enough profit motive, people forget/ignore...

California Superbloom all over the hills during my ride today. Sadly is mostly Black Mustard, but these cool purple flowers were popping through in one of the trails.

Easy ride today, just 3.5 miles and 417 feet of climbing. Great to be outdoors.

An endless hillside of bright yellow flowers dominates the foreground. It is primarily Black Mustard, brought here by Spanish settlers. Trees on hills in the distance form the background. The sky is overcast.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@nrohluap Definitely in the Fabaceae family, either a pea or a vetch. I'm not an expert on those so I'm not going to attempt further ID. However, if you want to find where you were on Calflora, you can probably find good ID based on previous sightings. https://www.calflora.org/entry/wgh.html

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@nrohluap Yeah, it's rare to go anywhere in CA and see majority native plants. I recently went to Jepsen Prairie Preserve and saw a lot of natives, but the introduced plants sneak in even there.

US media followed British propaganda for so long on Northern Ireland. It's a bit unusual to see Independent POV (a PBS program) show a documentary on British psyops re Northern Ireland this frankly.

The issues raised apply to more situations than this one.

Any experienced activists have advice on how to still be able to experience moments of joy (esp when one is isolated) in the midst of so much shit going down? How do you keep depression at bay when it's actually based on understandable external reasons for depression?

Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.

Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.

How many discoveries & innovations of do we attribute to the men who took credit for their ideas?

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril "Still, she probably freely shared her knowledge with Watson and Crick, rather than having her X-ray images used without her knowledge, as Watson himself implied" This is poppycock. PBS Nova talked to Watson and Wilkins in the '90s and it's pretty clear the data was gotten without her knowledge or consent. https://youtu.be/V9GuA27FJBg?t=266
